would you mind sharing the basics of your game plan now that we (and most other leagues) are switching to FOF2004?

Tough loss for you, I thought (and was hoping) you might be able to topple the mighty Redskins.

The basics of my gameplan were a balanced offense and a 4-3 m2m defense that I would switch to 3-4 when interior lineman were hurting. There was nothing special at all, as far as I can tell.

Anyway, thanks for the kudos and good luck next season!

Retirements: RG Kuechenburg hangs 'em up
Tampa (FL) - Ending months of speculation, 38 year-old guard Bob Kuechenberg finally hung up his cleats. Since 1980, Kuechenberg started 74 games and only just last year did he miss time on the field.

Most of the Buccaneers offense was on hand for the retirement ceremony as well as the coaching staff.

Kuechenberg was upbeat despite the announcement, "It's tough in the trenches. We beat the hell out of each other. It was a lot of fun. I just don't have anything left in the gas tank to fend off these young guys. It's their time now."

Assuming he was referring to Bucs guard Dean Steinkuhler, he's been somewhat of a dissappointment and for the most part, doesn't seem ready to fill the void.

But not focusing on possible issues next season, Bucs head coach Brock Lukacic kept things focused on the retirement. He presented Kuechenburg with a case of Schlitz and a gold watch during a ceremony today at One Buc Place. "We appreciate everything Bob has done for us and he's been a model Buccaneer both on the field and in the community. He will be missed."

Kuechenburg jokingly gave the watch (a Rolex) to TE Billy Joe Dupree as he secured the case of beer, but quickly retrieved it when teammates warned, "That's not fake!".

Two other members of the Buccaneers family retired this week. TE Billy Joe DuPree and CB Joe Lavender.

TE Billy Joe DuPree
Age: 35
GS: 44
Notes: His most successful year was in 1980, when he made 57 catches for 615 yards. His production was cut in half in 1981 and continued to slide, despite seeing quality playing time in 1982. By 1983, he was replaced in the lineup by 7th round pick TE Jamie Williams and was an after thought in 1984 (which prompted the retirement).

DuPree was never in the plans to get much playing time at all for the Buccaneers, but that all changed when TE Ozzie Newsome went down in the 1980 pre-season with a season ending injury and was subsequently traded the next year to the Seahawks. So his service was appreciated.

TE Joe Lavender
Age: 36
GS: 3
Notes: Joe arrived via free agency and was a club-house presence. He took over the responsibility of being the secondary leader. He made 31 tackles and made one pass defense in very limited action. Lavender spent a good portion of his career with the Oakland Raiders and played a breif stint (after being traded in 1983) with the San Diego Chargers.

Beer was the weight gainer of choice in the 80's. And these German guys could knock down twice as much American beer as our own corn fed grunts.

Of course, that being said, Kuechenburg weighed in at only 259 lbs. For a RG! At that weight today, he could have almost played MLB!

Mickey Greene's 1st Round Mock Draft
By Mickey Greene

A look at the upcoming rookie draft, and where this expert expects the players to end up... barring anymore trades.

1) CLEVELAND BROWNS
--Herschel Walker | RB | Georgia
While the national consensus says Jerry Rice, Cleveland's smart money is with Walker. Cleveland's already grooming a top receiver in Gary Clark and would improve the most with a running back.

2) OAKLAND RAIDERS
--Bruce Smith | DE | Virginia Tech
GM disturbed already made it clear that if Rice was available at 2, he wouldn't be drafting him. That said, Smith could easily go #1, and with his size and speed, will be giving QBs hell for many years to come.

3) NEW YORK JETS
--Jerry Rice | WR | Miss. Valley State
The Jets have more offensive woes than you can shake a stick at. But it's hard to pass up Rice here. The #1 and #3 picks here could easily be switched.

4) OAKLAND RAIDERS
--Ray Childress | DT | Texas A&M
The Raiders love his size, and they will get him here as he falls just out of the top 3.

5) KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
--Lomas Brown | T | Florida
Kansas City's Offensive Tackle department is in need of a serious overhaul, and Lomar Brown is about as much of a guarantee to be a stud as anyone in this draft. Great pick for them here.

6) MINNESOTA VIKINGS
--Richard Johnson | CB | Wisconsin
The Vikings lack a #1 corner and are very thin in the secondary. This is a pick they need to make.

7) GREEN BAY PACKERS
--Ken Ruettgers | T | USC
I expect them to go either T or WR here, but I think the best bet is with Ruettgers, someone that could stablize the right or left side of the line for a decade.

8) SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
--Freddie Joe Nunn | DE | Ole Miss
Nunn is a great run stopper, and would drastically enhance the 49ers subpar defensive line.

9) LOS ANGELES RAMS
--Broderick Thompson | T | Kansas
While they took Mitchell Bronson in the 2nd round last year, he doesn't seem to have the tools to be a star. Meanwhile, starting tackles of Thompson and Newton would have the chance to be a premiere duo in the GEFL.

10) TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
--Andre Reed | WR | Kutztown
Tampa Bay does not have many glaring holes, and Reed would be at the top of the board, and would compliment Cris Collinsworth very well.

11) SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
--Keith Millard | DT | Washington State
Seattle will be licking their chops if Millard falls this far, which is perfect as they are very thin here.

12) BUFFALO BILLS
--Duval Love | G | UCLA
The Bills would be fortunate to land the best G in the draft, a position in which they are in dire need of an improvement.

13) SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
--Greg Kragen | DT | Utah State
With Randy White expected to miss all of '85, the 49ers would be wise to add another impact DT here.

14) DALLAS COWBOYS
--Ron Pitts | CB | UCLA
With this pick, Dallas could grab a starter.

15) NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
--William Perry | DT | Clemson
The Fridge can step in and have an immediate impact in New Orleans.

16) BALTIMORE COLTS
--Duane Galloway | CB | Arizona State
Galloway would step in and right away compete for the nickel slot.

17) PITTSBURGH STEELERS
--Kevin Greene | LB | Auburn
The Steelers are weak at LB, meanwhile, Greene is one of the biggest high risk/ high reward prospects available.

18) SAN DIEGO CHARGERS
--John Hendy | CB |
With a lot of options, Hendy is a solid corner with no weakness in his game.

19) ATLANTA FALCONS
--Tony Simmons | DE | Tennessee
Simmons is a very good defensive end who probably deserves to go higher.

20) NEW YORK GIANTS
--Eddie Brown | WR | Miami
Brown is a playmaker, and would benefit from the fact that the G-men do not have a lot of talent at the wideout position.

21) OAKLAND RAIDERS
--Eugene Robinson | S | Colgate
Robinson is the best safety in the draft, and provides secondary depth.

22) PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
--Lance Smith | G | Louisiana Tech
Value pick here.

23) CINCINNATI BENGALS
--Chris Doleman | DE | Pittsburgh
If David Huang doesn't return, the Bengals need a starter at DE.

24) PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
--Jim Lachey | T | Ohio State
Another pick to revamp the paultry offensive line.

25) CHICAGO BEARS
--Bernie Kosar | QB | Miami
Fergunson is entering his 13th season, and Kosar could be groomed for the future.

26) CINCINNATI BENGALS
--Mark Bavaro | TE | Notre Dame
Bavaro would not only add to the passing attack, he also a solid blocker all around.

27) DENVER BRONCOS
--Ben Thomas | DE | Auburn
Denver needs a more all-around end, which Thomas is.

28) MEMPHIS SHOWBOATS
--Joe Walter | T | Texas Tech
Walter would be a steal here, and they need another lineman.

29) BIRMINGHAM STALLIONS
--Rich Miano | S | Hawaii
Miano isn't flashy, and may not show up on the highlight reels, but he might have the best football IQ in the draft.

30) TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
--Jay Novacek | TE | Wyoming
Novacek provides depth and a big target.

31) HOUSTON OILERS
--Alvin Toles | LB | Tennessee
With Gradishar's age, Houston could use some depth at ILB.

32) WASHINGTON REDSKINS
--Eric Martin | WR | Louisiana State
Ahmad Rashad just retired. Do you think Subby could resist Martin's potential?

Free Agency: QB Terry Bradshaw signs with Bucs
Tampa (FL) - 16-year veteran signal caller Terry Bradshaw (G/G) formally signed a 2-year deal with Tampa Bay.

QB Terry Bradshaw while with Memphis

This brings some relief to the Buccaneers who desperately wanted to address adding some depth behind fragile QB Neil Lomax (G/G). Last season, when Lomax went down, the Buccaneers left young QB Mike Kell(e)y to fend for himself in the playoffs against Oklahoma and Washington. While he did well in the first game against Oklahoma, he was abused by the Washington Redskins in the NFC Championship Game.

Bucs head coach Brock Lukacic was beaming at the press conference, "We are delighted to bring Bradshaw to Tampa. He has always played at a high level of performance, and despite his age, we think he can be ready to go when we need an experienced hand to run the offense."

Lead Bucs scout Chester Corbett agrees, "He's still got it. He may not be the same guy he was in his prime, but he's still better than a lot of quarterbacks out there who have spent half the time he has in the league.

Time's not up for QB Mike Kelly (F/A)

Despite the excitement surrounding the signing of idolized fan favorite QB Terry Bradshaw, Kelly showed excitement of his own. He was more than ready to duke it out in training camp.

"Terry Bradshaw is a living legend. It's a dream come true to be in camp with him. I met him once in 1983 during a Memphis, Bucs game. He's just a cool cat." (Ummm, cool cat is 80's talk.)

Bradshaw is likely to be 2nd and Kelly 3rd in the QB pecking order behind Neil Lomax. It's still a long off-season before opening day, so anything can change between now and then.

Los Angeles (CA) - Who's the highest paid outside linebacker in GEFL?

Clay Matthews?
Jack Lambert?

Neither.

Lawrence Taylor, right?

Nope.

Today the Los Angeles Express landed journeyman weak-side linebacker Eddie Ritter (G/G) by signing him to a 2-year 12 million dollar deal. $8 million guaranteed.

No, it's not 2005 folks. It's 1985.

League owners were somewhat bewildered by the excitement that Ritter generated. He's a smart linebacker, he can mentor some of the younger guys, he's still got decent skills. That nearly doubles the current top outside linebacker salary (1985 salary plus bonuses: $3.7m). To top it off, it's over double what RB Marcus Allen (GEFL's premier RB) makes and even is tops over stud Joe Montana's salary.

"It's just the craziness of a big time salary cap in an era of small time salaries." commented one league official.

In 5 seasons with the Cincinatti Bengals, Eddie Ritter played in 79 games, accumulated 241 tackles and 8 sacks. He also hurried the quarterback twice.

Los Angeles beat out multi-year/multi-million dollar packages put together by Oklahoma, Kansas City, Miami, the Giants, the Jets, and Pittsburgh. All of which offered anywhere from $6m to $14m in total salary. A total of 13 GEFL teams made Eddie Ritter a contract offer.

1985 Draft: Day One Welcomes Reed and Bavaro!
New York (NY) - I'm going to go out on a limb and say that nobody was cheering louder than QB Neil Lomax on the first day of the Bucs draft. Going into the draft with 4 picks in the first two rounds (1.10, 1.30, 2.11, and 2.30) the Bucs immediately went to work securing the 1.5 pick.

The deal included giving up the 1.10, the 2.11 and veteran RT Kenny Schwantes, last year's starting right tackle. It was a lot to give up, but the intention was clear. Firepower to help the Bucs passing game.

And at 1.5, the Bucs selected WR Andre Reed of Kutztown University. A small school in Pennsylvania that had GEFL Scouts swarming the campus during the off-season to check this kid out.

The Bucs hope he's the real deal, but more importantly, QB Neil Lomax hopes he's the real deal. "If this guy works out, I promise not to have a season ending injury this season."

Bucs are GEFL Bowl Bound? So says TE Mark Bavaro.

When the Neil Lomax celebration was hitting high gear, it must have hit a fever pitch when the #1 TE prospect in the draft, Mark Bavaro had his name called by the Buccaneers.

Bavaro, a Notre Dame standout and one of the stars at the GEFL Combines was excited, and quite a bit confident about the Buccaneers prospects with him and Andre Reed now on the team. "This is great stuff. The Bucs were one game away from the GEFL Bowl, and Andre and I are the missing pieces of the puzzle. We've been brought here to do a job and we're gonna do it well. We'll get the Bucs over those last few hurdles and bring home the championship. That's the goal. Anything less would be uncivilized"

Is K Mark Mosely finished in Tampa?

With the 2.30 pick, the Bucs went after a kicker, Donald Igwebuike, presumably to take the place of lengedary kicker Mark Mosely. Originally from Enugu, a city in Nigeria, Africa--he played his college ball at Clemson University and comes highly regarded by GEFL Scouts.

Note off the record: IRL Donald Igwebuike (Ig-Way-Bee-Kay) was probably only famous in Tampa Bay fan circles, but ultimately was infamous for leaving the team early (after the 1989 season) and most definately while he was still in his prime. The reason ended up because he was arrested and charged with aiding a $1 million dollar cocaine smuggling operation back and forth between Africa and the United States. This was the luck the Tampa Bay Bucs had with players back in the day. To his benefit, however, he was later acquitted and kicked for a while in the CFL before retiring from football for good in 1995.

1985 Draft: Nice work, Mickey Greene
New York (NY) - As predicted by prognosticator and journalist Mickey Greene, the Bucs indeed did land WR Andre Reed and even picked up a 1st round TE. Of course, the Bucs felt they had to trade up to snag Reed and felt fortunate when TE Mark Bavaro slipped to 1.30.

So, congrats to Mickey, you know your stuff!

The Buccaneers are set to begin 1985 with new weapons on offense, almost all defensive starters returning. The O-Line is somewhat of a concern at this point.

QB Neil Lomax returns and I am hopeful that he can last the entire season this year. An ill-timed injury in the final regular season game turned out to be a dramatic set-back for the upstart Buccaneers and they paid the price in the NFC Title Game against the Redskins. The only adjustment the Bucs made was to go out and aggressively sign a veteran signal caller to back up Lomax, which they accomplished when they signed 16-year QB Terry Bradshaw to a 2-year deal.

WR Andre Reed and TE Mark Bavaro hope to bolster the air attack which should also serve to give RB James Wilder plenty of room to work with as the teams bruising backer.

The right-side of the offensive line has been totally revamped with Bert Bolognese moving back over to RT (after serving as LT Kenn's backup) and project G Dean Steinkuhler taking over the reins from G Bob Kuchenberg. LG Paul Fairchild is also new to the mix, a late minute addition through trade puts him in the starters spot for now--replacing Derrick Nail, who had a dissappointing off-season.

Very little has changed on defense, all starters from 1984 are returning, with the exception of Emmitt Dodge, who will work in playing time from the bench this year while platooning with LDE Rex Robinson (a former 7th round pick for the Buccaneers.)

K Mark Moseley will spend this year on the bench as rookie sensation K Donald "Iggy" Igwebuike puts the opening kick-off into play for the Bucs.

I'd rather be posting to this dynasty than working so damned much...

The Year in Review?

The Bucs finished 8-8 as we tried as we could to learn the new FOF2k7 gameplan system. We didn't do bad, but for the talent we have on the team, it was a dissapointment.

It was also dissapointing to not cover the run of our rival Oklahoma Outlaws who managed to get to the GEFL Bowl (before losing 20-17 to the Baltimore Colts).

But I do want to keep this dynasty alive. If not just for historical purposes. So I will continue to post as much as I can and hope I will have some time soon to spend (and concentrate) on writing.

Here is the starters for the 1986 season. As you can see, we remain young and have tried to limit turnover as much as possible.

In the draft, we didn't get any exciting players like we did in 1985 (WR Andre Reed and TE Mark Bavaro) but we did try to focus on keeping solid talent on our offensive line (LT Will Wolford (F/G) and C Jay Pennison (A/VG))

Also, we are moving some of our run stopping linebackers into starting roles this year (McKeefrey and O'Connor) and will push Hugh Green and Dizzy Dzwonczyk back into Nickel and Dime situations to take advantage of their coverage skills.

FB Lawerence Sampleton will take the role of lead FB this year due to his exemplary blocking skills.

LT Mike Kenn, C Blair Bush, and P Larry Swider remain the only players to have started every opening day game for the Bucs since the leagues inauguration.
