The resurrection of Barry Sanders: A FOF 2K7 Dynasty
So the goal of this dynasty will be to get Barry Sanders, one of the greatest players never to play in the superbowl, not only to the big game, but to win the big game. We will start off in his rookie season (1989) and go from there.
After making some cuts and moving a few positions around the starters look like this:

Roster Outlook:

Outlook and Gameplan: Well the offense is OK. If we fall behind in games, there isn’t much chance of a comeback. This team will go as far as Barry can carry it. The gameplan will be to go with a base set as much as possible, rarely spreading out the field and just running the ball till the cows come home. On the defensive side of the ball, the players are best suited to an aggressive man to man scheme with lots of blitzing from the linebackers. The front seven are all very good against the run so opposing quarterbacks beware. The best case scenario would be a 9-7 season and just sneaking into the last wildcard spot. What is more likely would be a 6-10 season, since there is a lack of stars at key positions and the best players are all very young and inexperienced. Next Up: Division and League Preview. |

Division Preview:
Chicago: Probably the second best team in the league next to San Francisco. They are a similar team to Detroit in that they have a weak quarterback in Tomzack and Harbaugh and don’t have the best receivers. However, while they are the same in style, they are also much better than us at every position. With an especially strong defense that has great depth. They should easily win the division and challenge for the superbowl title. Their best offensive player is Neal Anderson and best defensive player is Richard Dent. Minnesota: Another very good team, with not a very good quarterback in Wade Wilson. They do have an excellent runningback in Herschel Walker and a very good offensive line. Defensively they are pretty good, with Chris Doleman generating a great pass rush and an excellent secondary anchored by Audrey McMillian and Joey Browner. They should probably finish second in the division being more experienced then we are, however we should give them a run for their money. Their best offensive players are Randall McDaniel and Herschel Walker and their best defensive players are Chris Doleman and Joey Browner. Green Bay: The Packers should be the worst team in the division. They have an aging defense that is past its prime and they do not have many young players ready to take over. The offense isn’t much better. They are led by the Magic Man, a decent offensive line and a pretty good receiving core. The one bright spot is Sterling Sharpe. He is one of the best players in the league and could dominate games. Their best offensive player is Sterling Sharpe and their best defensive player is Tim Harris. League Outlook: AFC: Predicted Division Winners: North: Cleveland Browns The Browns are led by Bernie Kosar and are a very cohesive unit with a strong defense and fairly potent offense. They should be challenged by the Bengals, who are led by Boomer Esiason and James Brooks. East: Buffalo Bills The Bills sport the conferences most dangerous offense. Led by Jim Kelly the Bills are loaded at every position with Kenneth Davis and Thurman Thomas at running back, and Andre Reed and James Lofton at receiver. The defense is led by Bruce Smith, who should content for league honours as well as a trio of excellent linebackers in Talley, Bennett and Bailey. South: Houston Oilers The Oilers have the easiest division with two expansion teams and a terrible Colts team to contend with. Warren Moon should have a huge year and William Fuller will be terrorizing quarterbacks the league over. West: Denver Broncos The Broncos are probably the best of a tough division, which doesn’t have a really strong team, but also doesn’t contain a weak team. The Broncos are led by John Elway, who will have to take the team on his shoulders since they don’t have a viable running game. The have a decent offensive line as well as good pass rushers and secondary on defense. NFC: North: Chicago Bears East: Philadelphia Eagles This should is the toughest division in football. 3 teams could win 12 or more games (Eagles, Redskins and Cowboys). The Cowboys have a strong defense and a young but talented offense with Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin, all they seem to need is a running back. The Redskins only questions come at quarterback with Doug Williams predicted to be the starter. The rest of the team is stacked and should be able to make up for the inconsistent play at the pivot. Finally the Eagles are led by the exciting Randall Cunningham and the all-world Cris Carter. The defense should challenge for the all time sack record with Reggie White, Clyde Simmons and Seth Joyner all wreaking havoc. Also if the quarterback manages to get rid of the ball, an excellent secondary will make completions a rarity. South: Atlanta Falcons This is easily the weakest division in the NFC. The Falcons have a decent roster with a strong linebacking core centered around Jessie Tuggle and Aundray Bruce, as well as a good secondary led by Deion Sanders. West: San Francisco 49ers The Niners are the most talented team in the league with stars at every position. Between Young and Montana at quarterback, Rice and Taylor at receiver, Charles Haley, Millen, Romanowski, McKyer and Lott on defense, the Niners will be tough for anyone to beat. |

Week 1
Home vs Seattle (We are favoured by 6) (-6) Passing: Hipple 9-29, 78 yrds, 1 TD Rushing: Sanders 22-122 Receiving: Jones 5-37 Well this game was entirely dominated by the defense. They recorded 7 sacks, an interception and force 5 fumbles (4 turnovers), which was nice because Hipple was terrible and we managed to fumble the ball 3 times (+3 margin). So we managed a victory eventhough we were outgained 279 to 211. Final: 28 – 3 W Injuries: Lost backup corner Terry Taylor for 3 weeks with a strained calf muscle. Week 2 At Chicago (1-0) (+4) Passing: Hipple 14-23 149 Rushing: Sanders 17-65 Receiving: Clark 5-76 Another poor offensive showing, with the Lions getting outgained 416 to 210 yards. Mike Tomczak had a field day, throwing for 305 yards and 3 touchdowns. This game was totally opposite to last game in that we couldn’t get a lick of pressure on the quarterback, attaining only a single hurry and sack. Looking over the film, Hipples lack of ability to complete short passes is really giving us problems as Barry is getting us in decent second down situations but Hipple is making bad throws. He’s got two more weeks and then some changes could be made. Final: 30-3 L Injuries: Nothing major, just a few bumps and bruises and Mel Gray will return this week Week 3 Vs Green Bay (0-2) (-4) Passing: Hipple 17-26 150 Rushing: Sanders 22-54 2 td Receiving: Johnson 3-47 Another game, another time getting torched in the yardage department 408 – 240. However this week, like week one we won the turnover battle (+5) and managed to generate a lot of heat on Blair Keil with 4 sacks and 7 hurries. Mel Gray also proved his worth, returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown. I’m beginning to feel that we’re a lot like the Bears over the last few years. Final: 27-17 W Injuries: Same as last week, we have 7 players with some kind of injury. Week 4 at Los Angeles Rams (3-0) (+2) Passing: Hipple 16-31 115 1 td, 1 INT Rushing: Sanders 22-66 1 td Receiving: Clark 4-42 I have been hoping for a 300 yard plus total offense game and it turns out I set my sights way too high, I should have been hoping for a 200 yard game this week. We managed a whopping 172 yards on offense, while surrendering 422 yards to the Rams. Jim Everett went 31-50, 367 yards but with two costly interceptions. Henry Ellard was the main recipient of the love catching 14 balls for 189 yards. However we got 75% of our offense in the two first drives, which both resulted in touchdowns. Then we got just enough yards every possession to pin the Rams deep. The Rams would drive the field, just outside of field goal range and then either turn the ball over or have to punt it away, lather, rinse, repeat. I've been trying to make a play on one of the San Fran QB's but I get the fan favourite/dead cap room message so they don't want to deal. Unfortunately hopes may rest with the development of Rodney Peete who is a 10/49 right now. I was kind of hoping we would be 1-3 right now so I could justify the move to Peete but it is a tough move to make when Kyle Orton, er Eric Hipple is winning games for you. Week 5
at Minnesota (2-2) (+3) Passing: Hipple 15-24 168 Rushing: Sanders 36-169 2 td Receiving: Stanley 2-44 Hooray, we managed to get over the 300 yard plateau and actually beat the other team in yards as well (357-251). This game followed the same plan, force some turnovers, don’t turn the ball over, get a lead and put heat on the quarterback. We were able to get up early and take Herschel Walker out of the game and Wade Wilson was unable to step up and beat us. Special teams played a huge role again with Jim Arnold averaging 50 yards a boot and allowing no return yardage, while Mel Gray had a good day returning kicks. Defensively we forced 2 interceptions as well as blocking 3 passes, getting a sack and 5 hurries. Final 23-10 W Week 6 vs Buffalo (4-1) (+1) Passing: Hipple 20-23 322, Peete 9-15, 98, 1 td Rushing: Sanders 15-53 2 td Receiving: Clark 8-147 Hopefully we didn’t use up all of our offense this week. Not only did we surpass the 300 yard barrier, but we surpassed the 400 yard barrier as well, amassing a total of 433 yards. Unfortunately we allowed the Bills to gain 400 yards themselves, while not forcing any turnovers. There are two big stories here, Buffalo got out early on us, where they were up 20-14 at half and 37-17 at the end of the 3rd quarter. This totally negated Barry Sanders and forced Hipple to try and stage a comeback. One thing I will give him is he did a good job but we are not going to win games coming from behind very often. The defense held Thurman Thomas to 35 yards on 19 carries but Jim Kelly went off throwing for 344 yards and 4 td’s. Also Rodney Peete replaced Eric Hipple midway through the 4th quarter maybe because the game was out of reach. It was kind of odd because Hipple was in the middle of leading a scoring drive and was just replaced by Peete at the 11 yard line. It doesn’t appear that he got injured either. Maybe he just had enough of Bruce Smith, who was crushing Hipple all day (4 sacks )? Final: 37-27 L Injuries: Lost starting FS William White for a week Week 7 at The Swamps of Jersey (Jets) (2-4) (-3) Passing: Hipple 21-40 165 Rushing: Sanders 17-78 Receiving: Clark 6-59 There is the Hipple Lions fans have come to love in a Matt Millen sense of the word. It was another maddening game of throwing into double coverage and missing wide open receivers. Nothing major to report in this game, we managed an epic 222 yards of offense, while surrendering 311 to the Jets. Al Toon had a big game with a 101 yards and 2 touchdowns. Freeman McNeil also broke the 100 yard barrier. Final: 28-7 L [b]Week 8[b] This was Hipple’s best performance yet, oh wait we didn’t have a game, still Hipple’s best performance yet. Week 9 vs Atlanta (3-4) (-6) Passing: Hipple 20-31 164 Rushing: Sanders 21-75 Receiving: Jones 3-48 Hipple’s greatest strength is also his greatest weakness. The best part is he gets a consistent amount of yards every week, the bad part is it is only 165 yards every game. Again we follow the same basic formula, force 3 turnovers, don’t turn the ball over ourselves, win the game, and marry the cheerleader. Jim Arnold had another big game negating Deion Sanders return ability. It is kind of a downer when your MVP race is between your kicker and your punter. Final 23-17 W Injuries: We loose 3 starters for next weeks tilt with the Niners. Dennis Gibson for a week with a concussion, and Mel Gray and Eric Williams for 3 weeks each with foot ailments. Up next midseason report. |

This team is really winning with smoke and mirrors. The only things we do well are forcing turnovers and not turning the ball over ourselves. Hipple is in the bottom quarter of the league as far a quarterbacks go, but he also doesn't get much help from his receivers. I have the sinking suspicion that we are going to end up 8-8, out of the playoffs, without a good draft pick. |

Week 10
vs San Francisco (5-3) (+2) Passing: Hipple 14-23 163 1 td Rushing: Sanders 17-107 Receiving: Clark 4-53 This wasn’t that surprising of a result. The Niners record had been deflated because both Young and Montana missed 4 games and Bono couldn’t quite carry the load. The Niners scored 5 touchdowns in their first 6 possessions to end any hope we had at winning this game. Hipple appears to be due for a 162 yard game next week, let’s hope not. This was Barry’s first really good game and most of his yards came during the first quarter while there still was a game to be played. Steve Young threw for 297 yards with Rice and Taylor both getting around 80 yards receiving. Roger Craig had a good game as well netting 144 yards. Final: 35-10 L Week 11 at Arizona (4-5) (-2) Passing: Hipple 17-21 133 1 td Rushing: Sanders 27-133 2 td Receiving: Clark 3-41 Possibly the dullest game to watch with only 486 yards total offense combined. We forced Timm Rosenbach into 2 turnovers and just killed them on first and second down. Their average yards to go on 3rd down was 11.2, which is quite astounding. Jim Arnold out dueled Tom Tupa in the most exciting matchup of the day. Another good day for getting after the quarterback with 8 sacks, 4 hurries and 5 knockdowns. Final: 27-0 W Week 12 vs Miami (6-4) (-2) Passing: Hipple 25-40 219 1 int, Peete 3-4 19 1 td 1 int Rushing: Sanders 15-59 1 td Receiving: Clark 7-92 Hipple broke the golden rule today, don’t turn the ball over. Our quarterbacks managed to throw 2 interceptions to Jarvis Williams that effectively ruined the day. The defense did a good job limiting Dan Marino to 53% passing with 245 yards. The defense was also unable to get any heat on Marino, which could have given us a chance this game. Frankly I was pretty surprised to be favoured in this matchup and apparently rightfully so. Final 28-17 L Week 13 at New England (8-3) (+5) Passing: Hipple 18-35 173 3 td 3 int Rushing: Sanders 27-178 Receiving: Jones 5-55 The Patriots surprising season has been led by the fairly Hipplesq rated Steve Grogan, who in his 15th season is ripping up the league. He is the 4th best passer in the league right now and is just shredding defenses. Grogan didn’t disappoint this game throwing for 3 touchdowns and 261 yards. Hipple had another poor game throwing 3 picks, which really killed us today because we actually outplayed New England. On our 3rd last drive of the game we were up 14-13, going in for a score and Hipple got picked off, leading to a score. We managed to score again with 2 minutes left to go up 21-20 but the Patriots went 67 yards in 2 plays to take the lead for good. Final 28-21 L |

Week 14
vs Minnesota (2-10) (-5) Passing: Hipple 12-22 139 2 int Rushing: Sanders 14-52 Receiving: Clark 4-59 With both wildcard teams at 9 – 4 we really needed to win this game and we responded with our worst offensive performance of the season. We managed a 70’s Buccaneers style 140 yards of total offense. This number was helped by the fact that the Vikings got 12 sacks, with 6! of them, one short of an NFL record, coming from Chris Doleman. Other than that, there is nothing much to report. It is now time to see if we can get some development of Rodney Peete as the free agent and draft quarterback market looks pretty bare. Final: 17-3 L Week 15 at Green Bay (4-9) (-2) Passing: Peete 19-30 160 Rushing: Sanders 19-70 1 td Receiving: Jones 6-57 Well we are now officially eliminated from playoff contention with this gem of a game. Rodney did not bad for his first start, hopefully he can give us slightly better output the rest of the season. Eventhough we managed to force 2 turnovers we still couldn’t get that close to winning this game. Pretty disappointing really, we were 6-4 with a shot at making the playoffs, now we’re just stinking it up. We managed only 216 net yards today, just sad really. Final: 28-13 L Week 16 vs Chicago (10-4) (+5) Passing: Peete 13-28 117 2 int Rushing: Sanders 22-74 1 td Receiving: Clark 5-81 Another anemic day on offense, I’m beginning to think that we have a disorder, eventhough Peete through 2 picks we came out +1 in the turnover battle. However we managed only 208 yards on offense, which ruined a solid day by the defense (286 yards allowed. Final: 21-20 L Injuries: FS William White is done for the year with a severe hamstring pull. Week 17 at Dallas (10-5) (+4) Passing: Peete 15-24 106 1 td Rushing: Sanders 21-93 1 td Receiving: Clark 4-51 So this is one of those games where you kinda want to win because well, that’s why you play the games, but you kinda want to lose because we could be picking top 6, but by winning you’re probably out of the top 10. So this was a typical game for us, give up 404 yards, while only gaining 177 ourselves. The turnover battle was even, all in all this should spell a loss right? Wrong, somehow, we managed to pull an upset, in a game that had no meaning for us but could get Dallas the 5 seed. We only managed to get 1 sack, force 1 turnover and we win. The reason why you ask? Simple Mel Gray went nuts, 32 yards per kick return, 45 yards per punt return, including a touchdown and we just kept the Cowboys out of the endzone. Tennessee's second round loss wasn't too surprising considering Indy is terrible and Jacksonville and Houston are expansion teams. The Niners were limited by injuries to their quarterbacks, or else they should have mounted more of a challange. |

I think one stat that really stands out for me is we averaged 55.875 plays per game while our opponants averaged 60.625. Pretty much a drive a game, I think there are definately some holes that need to be addressed in the offseason, but is the talent going to be there? Stay tuned.

Looking at our free agents I'm going to try and resign everyone above Palmer + Jones, unless they are demanding mad money. Hipple is worth keeping around because he is a mentor, but he is only going to be a backup this year so if he wants alot of money he is toast. On the plus side if I do let Hipple go, Gagliano is also a mentor. |

Draft:
So my goal is to get a quarterback, receiver and cornerback as well as some depth at fullback and that’s about all I really need. Unfortunately for me, my late season victory cost me dearly as I’m picking 16th instead of top 10. Top 5 review 1. Houston – OLB Lamar Lathon – Houston Lamar is the best player in the draft, although he is not a ton better than James Francis. This is a surprising pick for a team with a quarterback need and I would have thought they would have gone with Jeff George, hmm kinda sounds like 06. 2. Jacksonville – QB Jeff George – Probably the best of the field general bunch, although not without question marks. None of the quarterbacks scream franchise qb, but he should be a good pro. 3. Carolina – QB Mike Buck - Same deal as Jeff, pretty good pivot, just not a world beater, although all of the top qb’s combine score were troublesome and I expect some busts from the passers taken. 4. San Diego – QB Peter Tom Willis – Same deal as before 5. Baltimore – WR Terrence Mathis – Looks like an absolute stud, should be very productive for years to come. Rest of the first round

Team Preview
Quarterback Well Gagliano is a nice, average player, with good accuracy but he is bad at hitting his receivers in stride and finding receivers who change their routes. Rodney Peete, while raw, shows a lot of promise, can make every throw and there is hope he can be a difference maker in the future. Future is the key word in the last sentence; realistically all we can hope for is a performance similar to last season. Gagliano will mentor Peete this season. Rating: C- Runningbacks Barry Sanders is now fully developed and frankly amazing. 1500 yards should be a real target, I would say 2000 could be a real target but we’re not going to be leading enough for him to get his carries. Mel Gray is return man supreme and made a huge difference in the game he played. Spencer Tillman is a good backup, who can spell Barry for a short time. Paige is a tremendous blocker and a competent receiver out of the backfield and that is really all he needs to do. Rating: A Receivers: This position has been upgraded since last season with the addition of Proel and Largent. It’s still about middle of the pack but it’s better than bottom of the barrel. If the tight ends Jones and Centers could be combined into one player, he would be the most dominant tight end ever, unfortunately they are two people with Jones being the blocker and Centers being the receiver. Rating: B Offensive Line: The starters are all pretty good and the unit as a whole is solid with no glaring weaknesses. That being said there are no real stars either. There is reasonable depth here, especially at guard, however if one of the tackles goes down it could be big trouble. Rating: B+ Defensive Line: This is a very strong unit that can wreak havoc against the run and the pass. Williams, Ball, Brooks and Ferguson are all excellent against the run. Williams, Green and Randle are all excellent against the pass. This line should be able to terrorize offenses on all downs. Rating: A- Linebackers: This is another solid, deep unit. Cofer is an excellent pass rusher and can cause a lot of damage. With Speilman moving into the starting lineup the unit is better against the pass then in 89, while still maintaining its strength against the run. Again all that is missing here is a do all superstar. Rating: A- Defensivebacks: Another unit where upgrades were needed in the offseason. Unfortunately we were unable to land any free agents to help solidify the corners. The only good thing is Crockett is a year older and Davis has shown signs he can be a competent number 2. However expect another long season for the corners. The safeties on the other hand are fantastic. Blades and White form one of the most dominant combos in the league. Griffin is a tremendous nickel back and is a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks as shown in the 8.5 sacks he got last season. Rating: B+ Specialists: Very solid unit, there were games where Murray and Arnold were the best players on our team, which is sad in a way. Gray, when healthy, is a game changing return man. Rating: A Overall: There is a lot of talent on this roster, unfortunately we are missing a leader at quarterback and this team lacks cohesion (2nd worst in the league after the expansion teams). The talent is here to challenge for a playoff spot but it seems a 500 season is more likely. It should be another up and down season. |

Preseason
We went 1-3, no major injuries, good news. Regular Season Week 1 at Minnesota (0-0) (+2) Passing: Peete 17-31 126 1 int Rushing: Sanders 23-125 Receiving: Stanley 3-37 Ahh, this is a performance I’m used to. 201 yards total offense and my personal favorite drive, after throwing an interception on our 40 the defense forces a 3 and out and the Vikings punt the ball for a touchback and it is now the 2 minute warning. Then we proceed to get sacked 3 times in a row, give up the safety, kickoff to the Vikings, who promptly go 2 plays 71 yards for a touchdown. There was no answer for Herschel Walker today as he went 21-173 with 3 touchdowns. The only positive is we won the turnover battle again. Final: 29-12 L Injuries: James Jones – out indefinitely with Impaired Vision Week 2 vs New England (0-1) (-7!) Passing: Peete 15-24 205 1 td Rushing: Sanders 15-82 1 td Receiving: Clark 3-68 1 td We are heavy favourites going into this contest, have the writers not been watching our games? I’ve got to imagine that there was some mob betting scandal on this one. Again we win the turnover battle, but again a star lights us up, maybe fries us up is a better term this game as Irving Fryar goes 8-120 with 1 touchdown. Final: 23-17 L Injuries: Team MVP P Jim Arnold is out 3 weeks with a sprained foot, get well soon buddy! Week 3 at Dallas (1-1) (+4) Passing: Peete 24-30 236 2 td Rushing: Sanders 27-74 1 td Receiving: Clark 6-64 1 td We had an offensive explosion this week, amassing 326 yards of total offense, too bad Dallas managed 463 yards of total offense, led by Troy Aikman’s 306 yards passing. No matter Dallas kicker Roger Ruzek shanked all 4 field goal attempts to seal the victory for the Lions. In an unrelated story Ruzek’s family were returned unharmed after being kidnapped at the start of the week. Final: 24-21 W Week 4 at New Orleans (0-3) (+1) Passing: Peete 16-25 161 Rushing: Sanders 21-115 2 td Receiving: Largent 4-79 You would think being +2 in turnovers, keeping Swilling, Mills and company to 1 sack we would win the game right? Wrong, Mark Malone goes to town on us for the tune of 306 yards and the Saints running backs average 7 yards a carry today. Good god, defense is supposed to be our strong suit, I’m thinking if this continues a coaching change may be in the works. Final: 26-23 L Week 5 Bye, thank god, we’ll get our MVP back after this week. |

Week 6
at Chicago (2-2) (+8) Passing: Peete 19-35 153 1 td 3 int Rushing: Sanders 22-142 Receiving: Largent 4-49 Chicago has the best defense in the league and a decent offense. The 2 games they have lost have been strange, turnover filled affairs. If you looked at the total yards (270-316), you would think this was a close game and you would be wrong. Again following the recipe of last season, lose the turnover battle, lose the game. Today we got shelled in the turnover battle and we got annihilated. We turned the ball over 4 times, which really hurt us defensively as well as eventhough they were playing well, they couldn’t hold up against the short field. Barry had another solid game and is really cementing himself as one of the best backs in the league. Rodney “Cullpepper” Peete has now upped his fumble total to 9, this is not good folks. Fans may soon be waxing poetic about the days of Hipple. Final: 34-7 L Injuries: Of course they strike the position with the least depth, LT Lomas Brown was lost for 3 weeks. Week 7 vs Tampa Bay (2-4) (-1) Passing: Peete 20-27 190 1 td Rushing: Sanders 36-109 Receiving: Clark 4-60 The 35000 in attendance witnessed a complete and utter demolition of a team today. Thankfully for us, it was the Bucs who had a horrible day. 188 yards total offense, and 5 interceptions by their quarterback, wait for it, wait for it, Eric Hipple!. Yes the Hipple had a whopping 29.2 qb rating today. The defense also held the rushing tandem of Rozier and Hinsley to 26 yards on 10 carries. Tampa never made it to the other side of half today, let alone the red zone as we crushed the opposition. Final: 26-0 W Injuries: FS James Griffith (super sub) is out 4 weeks with a hyperextended knee Week 8 at Atlanta (4-3) (+6) Passing: Peete 16-41 148 1 int Rushing: Sanders 9-55 1 td Receiving: Largent 5-76 About all I have to say about this outing is yuck. The defense played well holding Atlanta to 291 yards. It would have been nice if the offense had made the trip from Detroit as well, amassing only 171 yards. Peete has shown flashes of ability but the questions linger about whether or not he can be a superbowl winning quarterback. Peete’s two fumbles proved costly as both led to Falcon touchdowns and put the game out of reach. Final: 33-10 L Week 9 vs Carolina (3-5) (-2) Passing: Peete 16-22 160 2 td Rushing: Sanders 36-179 1 td Receiving: Largent 6-117 1 td Today the good Rodney showed up, managed the game well and we won, now if he can just be more consistent the rest of the season, I’ll be happy. 4th overall pick Mike Buck had a long day throwing 2 picks and losing a fumble before being pulled late for Bobby Hebert after the game was out of reach. Week 10
vs Green Bay (3-5) (+2) Passing: Peete 16-33 193 1 td 1 int Rushing: Sanders 28-116 Receiving: Clark 2-38 This was one of those games where you try and lose, but you’re winning, so then you try not to lose and you lose. Make sense? We were doing well, up 13 midway through the 3rd quarter, having survived 4 fumbles (2 lost) up till that point. Then a long Kubiak bomb is hauled in by Sterling Sharpe (the bane of our existence) and then Keith Woodside punches one in, up 6. Then we get the ball back and go Zabransky style, Peete throws the pick, pushes the guy out at the 5, Woodside touchdown, game over. Bah! Final: 21-20 L Week 11 vs Minnesota (5-4) (+2) Passing: Peete 8-15 135 2 td 1 int Rushing: Sanders 31-190 (7 runs of 10 yards or more, very maddenesq) Receiving: Clark 6-91 1 td This was definitely an interesting game, we punted only twice, while the Vikings punted 5 times, however they outgained us 436 to 330 yards. Mel Gray had a great day returning a kick for a touchdown and averaging over 30 yards a return (kick and punt). Peete had a decent game, not that he did much, only throwing the ball 15 times. The score could have been much more lopsided except the Vikings scored 3 touchdowns and a field goal in the 4 red zone visits, while we only managed 1 touchdown and 4 field goals on our red zone visits. I think we find it too easy to score in close, we prefer more of a challenge. This looks like a repeat of last season, where we’re not bad enough to get a good pick, but not good enough to make the playoffs. Final: 40-23 W Week 12 at Buffalo(8-2) (+12) Passing: Peete 15-24 209 2 td 2 int Rushing: Sanders 28-120 Receiving: Largent 5-111 So the vegas people don’t give us much of a chance eh? Well that really pissed off Eddie Murray. Murray connected on 3 field goals over 40 yards. Also our line was able to withstand the leagues top pass rush of Smith, Talley and Bennett, allowing only one sack. The most amazing stat of the day, Rodney Peete out dueled Jim Kelly. I’ll just let that sink in for a moment. Our defense held Kelly to 220 yards and forced 2 picks. As a whole the defense played very well and the offense did just enough to seal the victory. Somewhere, someone got very rich on this game, point shaving scandal, I think so. Final: 23-7 W Week 13 vs Arizona(3-8) (-2) Passing: Peete 14-29 174 2 td 1 int Rushing: Sanders 23-111 Receiving: Clark 4-86 1 td So how would the team respond after a fantastic victory that lifted the franchise into playoff contention? How did you think we’d respond, remember momentum is tomorrow’s starting pitcher and Rodney isn’t exactly the guy you want to be putting out there every day. This was a total sham of a game, we force 5 turnovers, and allowed 227 total yards, while only turning the ball over once. However we couldn’t string together any first downs and Jim Arnold had a very busy day, punting 8 times. LeRoy Irvin provided a big spark by returning the one turnover 88 yards for a score, then a couple of missed tackles by Ray Crockett led to long passing touchdowns, and that was all she wrote. Week 14
at Miami(10-2) (+11) Passing: Peete 21-48 239 1 td 1 int Rushing: Sanders 19-105 2 td Receiving: Clark 4-72 What a wonderful division to draw, we can’t get the one with two expansion teams, nope. Give us the one with two Hall of Fame quarterbacks in their prime. We couldn’t hope for a result similar to last time, could we? The short answer is, well no. However we did make them work for it, forcing Dandy Dan into overtime, where it took 3 possessions a piece to find a winner. Marino threw for 351 yards and two touchdowns, but at least it was on 54 throws. Now if he only had a running game, where have I heard that before? We played the Dolphins pretty tough, the only sore spot, besides losing was Peete’s poor completion percentage of 44%. It’s not like we are calling lots of low percentage passes, he just ain’t making them. Clayton and Duper both had great games that saw both eclipse the century mark. On a positive note, Barry is now over 1500 yards for the season. Final: 27-24 L (OT) Week 15 vs Chicago(7-6) (+3) Passing: Peete 11-27 88 1 td Rushing: Sanders 18-92 Receiving: Clark 3-37 1 td Chicago leads the division, a win here for the Bears would almost wrap up the title for them and a loss for us would officially eliminate from the playoffs. And what would you know, Peete turns in his worst game of the season and the Lions are out of the playoffs. In Peete’s defense receivers dropped 3 balls, the Bears defense had 8 sacks, 7 hurries and 7 knockdowns but we don’t like excuses. No turnovers, just 10 punts and a safety, good day all around. Final: 22-7 L Week 16 vs Jets(4-10) (-5) Passing: Peete 12-23 126 1 td Rushing: Sanders 36-169 1 td Receiving: Clark 2-33 1 td We are favoured in a game, late in the season, silly Vegas. We maybe they weren’t so crazy after all. The stats seemed pretty even between the two teams, both within 5 yards of 310 yards total offense, we were +1 in the turnover battle but the key stat was their starting position was their own 17 yard line, ours was our own 41 yard line. God bless Jim Arnold and Mel Gray. Final: 30-8 W Week 17 at Green Bay(5-10) (+1) Passing: Peete 14-23 138 Rushing: Sanders 24-78 Receiving: Largent 6-64 The battle for the bottom of the division, who will emerge victorious? I think you know the answer to this, of course we would win this game because who likes a top 10 pick when you’re trying to get a top notch quarterback? Really, who wants rebuilding to be easy? We emerge victorious in this field goal fest, good grief. Well that caps another mediocre season, it’s obvious that Peete isn’t the answer, the question is can we get anyone better? BTW, yes Sterling had another huge game, 10 receptions for 130 yards, did you expect anything less? Final: 12-6 W up next: Playoffs, you’re talking about playoffs? |

Free Agency
Our needs in order are QB WR CB Looking at the free agent market, the cubbard is bare, there are only 2 guys who would fit our needs, both corners, both old. Everson Walls and LeRoy Irvin. The qb class consists of Schoeder, Blackledge and DeBerg, not exactly what I'd hope for in a free agent class. We manage to sign Irvin, he should be a starter at right corner and will bring some experience to our young corners. Draft: Well at our positions of need there are not many corners, lots of good receivers and 1 good (theoretically) quarterback, Brett Favre. His ratings are terrible (I'd guess he is around a 40 overall) but his combine scores are very good and my scout seems to think he is very underated. The big question is where is he going to go. In previous incarnations of FOF I would have guessed I could get him at 12, even though he is the best QB available (unless you think Zolak will be better) ((Acctually Zolak was my favourite tecmo qb to get, don't ask)). However after the latest patches, I think the cpu does a much better job at finding sleepers and picks them much closer to where they should go, well lets see what we can do. |
