The most amazing stat by far is Favre throwing only 1 interception, just 1. Barry had another solid season and is almost at 9000 yards. Next year barring injury he should eclipse the 10000 yard barrier. Lastly the standing then off to the playoffs.

Amazing we had the highest scoring offense and lowest scoring allowed defense. But as you can see from the old power rankings, we really didn't play anyone either.

Looking at it now I really don’t think we want homefield advantage. The 1 seed has a very good chance at getting Philly in the second round because they should skunk St. Louis and I’m pretty sure New Orleans will beat Chicago. Well lets see what happens.

20 Chicago
23 New Orleans

38 Miami
35 Tennessee

14 New Jersey
16 Denver

17 Philadelphia
0 St. Louis

Division Round
So for being the number 1 seed, we draw the Eagles who are one of the top 3 teams in the league and the Cowboys get the *tougher* division champion Saints. Bah!!!!

First lets hit up the other games

17 New Orleans
20 Dallas

24 Miami
20 Buffalo

9 Denver
31 Cleveland

vs Philadelphia (13-4) -1

1st Quarter
We get the ball to start the game, unfortunately it’s 3 and out. We pin the Eagles deep inside the 10 but Randall does it to us again and starts driving them down the field. He hits Quick for a 43 yard gain and Moore for a 22 yard gain and next thing you know it they at the 10 yard line. However our defense holds and all the Eagles can get is a field goal. We get the ball back after an excellent return to the 40 yard line by Clark. Favre drops back and does something he only did once all season, throws a pick. Eric Allen picks off the pass and the Eagles are threatening again. This time they forgo Randall and try to run the ball, big mistake. Their drive stalls and they punt it away, pinning us at our 3. The first two plays amount to 0 yards and we are looking at giving the ball back in great field position. Then Barry decides this isn’t good enough and runs for 11 yards and a first down. Then Favre hits Carter for 22 yards, burning Eric Allen. Favre hits Carter 3 more times before the quarter ends with us first and goal from the 3.

Philly 3 Detroit 0

2nd Quarter
First play, another negative as Reggie sacks Favre and drives us back to the 11. We are not to be denied though as Favre hits McCardell for the score and we go up 7-3. Randall gets the ball back at the 20 and promptly completes 4 passes down to our 30 to set up a long field goal try, which is missed wide left. Barry gains 6 yards on his first carry of the series, plus an extra 15 thanks to Mr. White dragging him down by the facemask. Then Favre hits James Jones down the seam for 39 yards and another touchdown. 14-3 good guys. It doesn’t take long for Philly to respond. First play of their drive, Randall hits Herman Moore for 52 yards. Two plays later he hits Michael Haynes for a touchdown and it’s 14-10. We get the ball back and Barry starts ripping off runs of 2, 3, 10, 11 and 16 yards. Mix in a couple of Favre throws and Gizmo runs and we are second and goal at the Philly 2. Barry goes up and over the top, is he in? The ref says no, third and goal from the 1. Then disaster, false start, we get driven back to the 6, miss the pass and settle for a field goal, 17-10 Lions. The Eagles get the ball back and for the second time we hold them to 3 and out. We get the ball back on our 41 with a minute left. Favre completes two passes to Carter and McCardell to set up a 47 yard attempt by Norwood but he shanks it wide left, uh oh!

Philly 10 Detroit 17

3rd Quarter

The 3rd quarter starts with both teams driving the ball 20 or so yards only to punt the ball into each others end zone. With 7 minutes left Philly gets the ball back and begins a long, soul crushing drive. Cunningham completes 7 of 11 and drives the Eagles well within field goal range, including 3-4 on third down. Herman Moore says thanks to his old team by dropping a sure touchdown pass and limiting the Eagles to a 30 yard field goal as the quarter expires.

4th Quarter
Well we have picked up another nemesis, Favre drops back on the first play and hits Eric Allen for his second pick of the afternoon. Again the defense picks him up and forces a 3 and out. We then trade 3 and outs and now have the ball at our 4 with 10 minutes remaining. Barry and Brett drive the team down the field to the 29 yard line where the drive stalls after we came a yard short for the first down. Scott Norwood has a chance to redeem himself with a 46 yard try and just like the superbowl he pounds it wide left. The collective hearts of Detroit sink, it’s all on the defense now. Cunningham gets the ball at the 36 with 5 minutes left, they need a touchdown. He starts with an 8 yard pass to Mike Quick, which is followed by an Ed Toner first down run. Then Terry Kirby runs three times to get a second first down. After a 3 yard Toner run and two incomplete passes the Eagles face a 4th and 7 with 2:45 remaining. Randall drops back, Moore is double covered, he looks him off and sees David Mims come open over the middle, he hits him for a 10 yard gain and a first down. Then Randall hits Keith Jackson for 16 yards. The next play he goes his way again, in the endzone, drop. Big break for Detroit. 2 minute warning, the Eagles are scheming something. Randall drops back, rolls out and hits a wide open Herman Moore for the score, Philly is up 20-17 with 2 minutes remaining. After a long kickoff we get the ball at the 20 with 1:51 left. First down, Favre is hurried by Robert Banks and missed Cris Carter. Second down, he hits Carter for a 6 yard gain. Third down, Eric Swann gets some heat on Favre forcing him to miss McCardell. 4th and 4, this is the season right here. Favre looks downfield, everyone is covered, Reggie is bearing down on him and smokes him just as he flips the ball towards Barry. Barry grabs the ball and scampers for 4 yards and the first down. 1 minute left, and we need 40 yards to get in field goal range. Favre drops back and sees Carter open, but Banks knocks the ball back in his face. Second down Favre misses Carter who was mismatched on a linebacker. Third down Favre tries to hit McCardell, but fails. Having Swann in his face didn’t help the situation. Fourth down, last chance, Favre drops back, the receivers down field are covered so he checks down to McCardell but he only gains 6 yards, turnover, game and season over.

Final: 20-17 L (14-3)

Those missed field goals really hurt, I know they were long but man did we need them. You only get so many chances and we really needed to capitalize here today.

DE Charles Mann
LB Wilbur Marshall
DT Steve McMichael

QB Doug Williams
Wow lots of big names gone. Those D-Line losses are going to hurt, maybe cutting Brown will give me enough money to go after a William Fuller or Jerome Brown.

Cut – OT Lomas Brown – cap casualty
Summer – OT – Lincoln Kennedy – why I could cut Lomas Brown

Free Agency
Needs
Starters at FB and DE, Backups at QB, RB, DT, OLB
Most of these I think I can go after in the draft, we did lose our second round pick in the Cris Carter trade, so that will hurt a bit. Let’s see what we can do.

Targets
NT John Randle 39/39 – Pass rush specialist
- signed 1.08 million over two years
DE Les Miller 54/60 – All around lineman who has been rusting on the bench in SD
- signed 1.95 million over two years
DE Clyde Simmons 37/37 – Pure pass rush, would team with RDE Brooks
- signed 2.68 million 3 years – bit risky but definite need
RB Rodney Hampton 42/42 – Solid backup to Barry
- signed 840K over two years
QB John Friesz 26/45
- signed 840 K two years
SLB Steve Hendrickson 25/50
- signed 840K two years

Draft
1-28 – CB – Jason Sehorn – USC – 38/51 – Nickle back for now should be a future starter
3-29 – DT – Dan Wilkinson – Ohio State – 18/30 – Kind of a Randle clone will help with depth
4-28 – WR – Isaac Bruce – Memphis – 25/45 – Will be the 3rd option for a couple of years
5-30 – FB – Mack Strong – Georgia – 24/46 – Has blocking skills to step in right away
6-29 – S – Jay Bellamy – Rutgers – 14/35 – Best player available, should steal Oldham’s spot
7-28 – QB – Gus Frerotte – Tulsa – 8/23 – Needed a 3rd QB and some comic relief
Overall: A-
McCardell holds out, I pony up for our number 2 receiver to the tune of 8.35 over 4.

Up next 89 draft revisited

It seemed as though that was because Carter drew alot of double teams so Favre had to look elsewhere with the ball. We will be better served the more we get the ball into his hands. Preseason
Nothing much of note, a few nicks, lost Boatswain for 6 weeks with a broken arm, few other guys questionable. We go 3-1 and look pretty good overall.

I pull the trigger on a deal that sees us get LB Eric Hill from Arizona for a 5th round pick. A little karma for doing the 5 year draft perspective?

We're number 1, put up or shut up time.

A good game from the force turnovers department as we chalk up 6, 3 picks of Tomczak and 3 fumbles. For having so many possessions I would have liked to see a little more than 263 yards total offense. It’s a win, but not a good win.
Final: 27-13 W (1-0)

Week 2
vs New England (1-0) -13
Passing: Favre 17-20 327 5 td
Rushing: Sanders 32-127
Receiving: Carter 6-232 2 td

Well, well this is where Joe Cool winds up after backup up old Steve Young. He’s aged but not too badly and still has some good football in him. New England has a pretty decent roster and could have a little something this year. That being said, today was not their day. After the GM came down hard on the coach, who in turn came down hard on the players, both sides of the ball were working well. We hung up 473 total yards to their 160 and basically ran Montana ragged. Favre had by far his best day as a pro and Cris Carter was the main beneficiary. This was a good day all around, good day.
Final: 35-0 W (2-0)

Eric Davis is out 5 weeks with a groin injury.

Week 3
vs New Orleans (2-0) -5
Passing: Favre 21-23 247
Rushing: Sanders 28-114 3 td
Receiving: Carter 5-99

Another game, another big offensive showing. Sanders finally had a Barry type day and Favre continued to justify the faith we had in him. John Randle and Jerry Ball combined for a sack and a half each as the defense had another decent day. Most of the yards Bobby Hebert managed were late, when the game was already over. Jumpy Geathers and Wayne Martin are going to be appearing in Favre’s nightmares for a while as they each managed 3 sacks.
Final: 41-24 W (3-0)

Week 4
vs St. Louis (2-1) -10
Passing: Favre 14-22 249 1 td
Rushing: Sanders 29-155 1 td
Receiving: Carter 4-134 1 td

If you were watching this game on tv, you would have never left your seat for fear of missing a huge play. The teams combined for over 800 yards total offense, with a little bit more of that going the good guys way then not. Two key interceptions, one on the first play of the game, one on the last, sealed the deal for us. The first led to a 4 play 89 yard touchdown drive, taking Ram points off the board, and the last ended a long drive that could have tied or won the game for the Rams. So Ray Crockett and William White are big heroes tonight.
Final: 20-17 W (4-0)!

Bye

Week 6
at Green Bay (2-3) -10
Passing: Favre 24-34 333 2 td 1 int
Rushing: Sanders 21-103
Receiving: McCardell 9-143 Carter 7-120 2 td

Well we lost the turnover battle but we didn’t lose the day. Favre continued to play out of his skin, unfortunately he threw his first pick and lost a fumble, but he put up another 300 yard game, which means he has twice as many this year as his entire career. On another positive note, no punts today, 3 field goals, 3 touchdowns, 1 missed field goal, 1 fumble and 1 interception. And the big news, BIG news is we held Sterling Sharpe to only 62 yards.
Final: 30-20 W (5-0)

We lost Bennie Blades for 10 weeks with a broken foot

Week 7
at San Francisco (3-2) -7
Passing: Favre 21-27 288 2 td
Rushing: Sanders 25-140 1 td
Receiving: Carter 6-97 1 td

The Niners are a really interesting team they kept Young and Rice but couldn’t keep anyone else because they take up so much of their cap. I wonder if this would have happened in real life, had the cap come in earlier and they hadn’t cheated it. Another big game another big result. We really went after the Niners and they really came after us. We both managed 423 yards but we forced 3 turnovers and that was the difference. Favre had another big day, I hope the defense can get a little more heat on the quarterback and show a little more stopping power. Maybe we have missed the window for the defense.
Final: 34-17 W (6-0)

Week 8
vs Seattle (4-2) -8
Passing: Favre 15-19 194 1 int
Rushing: Sanders 22-118
Receiving: McCardell 6-104

This was a great win for us because we won this game, but won it way too ugly for my taste. The defense stepped up, specifically George Jamieson who sacked Kubiak 4 times and Sehorn who sacked him twice. We also did a good job holding their running back tandem of Jamal Anderson and John L Williams to 70 yards on 30 carries. The offense did everything that was asked of it, except score, this game really wasn’t as close as the score.
Final: 12-10 W (7-0)

Week 9
vs Chicago (4-3) -7
Passing: Favre 19-27 266 2 td 2 int
Rushing: Sanders 33-129
Receiving: Centers 5-87 1 td

Today for the second time this year both sides of our team clicked. We more than doubled the Bears offense, brought stars to Tomczaks head and made Neal Anderson cry. Nothing much else to say, good effort, Favre has started to throw some picks and that is mildly concerning but the rest of his play is enough to make up for it.
Final: 26-10 W (8-0)

Well one hell of a first half to the season, we’ll bring in the summary and standings next then we’ll see if we are for real.

Well Tennessee is at it again, Warren Moon is detroying the league, maybe they will repeat the undefeated feat? We have a 4 game lead in the North, things can't be going much better, which means lots of injuries in the second half.

Let's go Moon, let's go!

Very nice looking team you've assembled. Just too bad it looks like Stegall will never see the light of day with all the guys ahead of him on the depth chart. He's about to break the TD record in the CFL.

Yeah 137 and holding for ol Stegall. It could be a while for him because teams seem quite intent on double and triple teaming him so they don't give up the record. Seems that it is playing out well for winnipeg as there are alot of open guys around not that it's helping them win games though.

Great read, really enjoying this, although it does bring back the sadness of Barry quitting so young.

Getting close to 10k!

Week 10
at Arizona (3-5) -8
Passing: Favre 23-26 380 4 td
Rushing: Sanders 29-99
Receiving: Carter 6-133 1 td

Being a Cardinals fan, this kinda hurt, except for the fact that I’m managing the Lions. The word that best describes this game would be, annihilation. We broke the 500 yard mark in total offense (which is like 2 to 3 games of offense for us normally), while allowing only 200. Forced 4 turnovers and almost averaged 8 yard a play. The only two drives where we didn’t score points occurred right at the end of the game, when all of the scrubs were in. Favre recorded another perfect 158.3 rating, which is his second of the season and bumps his rating to 135.6 through 9 games.
Final: 51-10 W (9-0)

Week 11
vs Minnesota (4-5) -13
Passing: Favre 16-25 238
Rushing: Sanders 31-86 2 td
Receiving: McCardell 5-109

When you average more than 10 yards to go on third down, as the Vikings did today, you’re in trouble. The team played very well today and since we got up early we were able to neutralize Herschel. The only bright spot for the Vikings was Michael “He he” Jackson who went over the century mark on 5 receptions, other than that it was a pretty dominate performance. On a side note Barry eclipsed the 10,000 yard mark for his career. Only 8356 more to go!
Final: 26-14 W (10-0)

Week 12
at Buffalo (9-1) -3
Passing: Favre 13-29 306 1 td Friesz 1-2 9 1 td
Rushing: Sanders 15-60
Receiving: Carter 7-121

This is the game, this is where we find out how good we really are, late in the season, going into Buffalo against Kelly, Thomas and Reed. Things started off very well, our first 3 drives ended in points and we were up 13-0 at the end of the first quarter. At half time we were up 10 16-6 and looking in control. But Thurman found his helmet and came out charging in the second half. He reeled off three straight scores and all of a sudden we were down 27-16. As we were driving late in the game the second worst thing that could happen, happened as Mike D’Onofrio came barreling in on Favre from the backside. Favre rolled around on the turf as everyone back home in the Motor City held their breath. He was able to leave the field under his own power but he’s going to be out a couple of weeks with a sprained foot. Friesz was able to finish off the drive with a score, but was unable to lead the team to victory.
Final: 27-22 L (10-1)

Week 13
at Dallas (6-5) -6
Passing: Friesz 24-31 313 2 td 1 int
Rushing: Sanders 26-66 1 td
Receiving: Carter 7-135 1 td
Exactly who I wanted to face with Favre out, wonderful, Aikman and Irvin, in Dallas. Eventhough Dallas doesn’t have a great record this game was a knock down, drag em out affair. We traded touchdowns with Dallas on three occasions and missed field goals on another. Finally after a long drive late in the third quarter Norwood drilled a field goal to put us up for good. In the 4th quarter nothing much happened as the defenses decided to show up to limit each team to just under 400 yards.
Final: 24-21 W (11-1)

Injuries: Favre is probably, but we’ll let him sit next week since we have wrapped up the division and have a two game lead on home field advantage. Sehorn is out for 9 weeks, which hurts but we actually have depth there so it’s better this year than in others.

Week 14
at Miami (9-3) +1
Passing: Friesz 20-41 175 2 int
Rushing: Sanders 22-80
Receiving: Carter 5-39

This is the first game we haven’t been favoured in all season. Marino is having a good year, which is unusual because he normally has stellar years. This decline is due to the fact that he has corpses for receivers. Today they behaved like that as well, which helped us limit Marino to 14-30 for 134 and 1 pick. Normally that would seal a victory, but this is the John Friesz era in Detroit and he did his best to see that we lost. He threw two picks and fumbled twice and that coupled with our inability to stop the run (Robert Green and Darrell Thompson both averaged more than 6 yards per carry) lost us the game. And the whole only got 3 points thing, may have hurt us as well. This just underlines how important Favre is to this team and the fans will welcome him back next week.
Final: 20-3 L (11-2)

Week 15
vs Green Bay (7-6) -9
Passing: Favre 16-22 242 3 td 1 int
Rushing: Sanders 25-89
Receiving: Carter 5-106 2 td

Ahh, that’s more like it, Favre came in today and tripled Friesz’s quarterback rating from a week ago. On a side note I’m kinda worried about Barry, his numbers haven’t been stellar, also haven’t been Reggie Bushish, but definitely not stellar. This week we totally shut down their running game holding Vince Workman to 17 yards and Erric Pegram to 30. Sterling Sharpe had another big game averaging over 20 yards a catch, as did his running mate Rocket Ismail. But that wasn’t enough as Clyde Simmons 4 sacks helped polish off the Packers and bump them from a playoff spot.
Final: 33-23 W (12-2)

Injuries: Eric Davis and George Teague are out for 3 and 4 weeks respectively

Week 16
vs Jets (6-8) -12
Passing: Favre 20-20 227 2 td
Rushing: Sanders 38-110 3 td
Receiving: McCardell 4-70

The end result of this game was never in doubt as the Jets were unable to do anything with the ball until late in the fourth quarter when we pulled the starters and allowed two touchdowns. Nothing really of note happened in this game. The big performance from the Jets was Dennis Gibson’s 15 tackles, other than that, nothing special except for Favre going 20 for 20.
Final: 38-15 W (13-2)

Week 17
at Minnesota (6-9) -10
Passing: Favre 15-18 209 2 td 1 int
Rushing: Sanders 21-64 2 td
Receiving: Carter 5-114

Coming into this game Atlanta is one game behind us at 12-3. I am assuming because of our superior conference record (all three of Atlanta’s losses are in the conference), we have clinched home field, but I’m not totally sure, so let’s crush the Vikings just to be safe. And crush is exactly what we did, with Glen Foley feeling much of the pain getting sacked 5 times. The only bright spot for the Vikings was Herschel rushing for 110 yards on 22 carries, other than that the road to the SuperBowl runs through the motor city (seriously when did you think you’d hear those words?)
Final: 34-17 W (14-2) ATL lost btw so the tiebreak was a mute thing

Up next, season stats and team summary followed by the playoffs!

Wow, fantastic year for Favre.

Showdown with Moon to cap off the season?

14 New Orleans
13 St. Louis

17 Philadelphia

Division Round
So we are playing the Saints. Now these aren’t the Saints that we played earlier in the season as they are now lead by Trent Green, who is one of the 5 best quarterbacks in the league right now. Offensively they are pretty average outside of Green. On defense they do an excellent job at getting after the quarterback with Wayne Martin, Jumpy Geathers, Pat Swilling and Sam Mills. Without Carter to bail out Favre today I think we could be in a lot of trouble, he really opens up the offense for us and this could be tricky.

vs New Orleans (10-7) -7
Rushing: Sanders 13-68 1 td
Passing: Favre 23-29 273 1 td
Receiving: McCardell 6-127

Well crap. We got down early, didn’t do a damn thing all first half. By the time we turned it on we were down 16-0 and we just couldn’t get it back. Wayne Martin was a thorn all day, he got 3 sacks and 4 hurries. Geathers and Swilling were also in the backfield all day, getting 7 combined hurries. What a disappointing end to the season.
Final: 23-17 W (14-3)

23 New Orleans
17 Detroit

21 Philadelphia
36 Atlanta

17 Miami
14 Tennessee

20 Pittsburgh
13 Buffalo

Super Bowl
This was quite the game. Would Marino finally get his ring? Sure looked that way.
1Q: 10:39 NOS - Barry Foster 7 pass from Trent Green (Morten Andersen extra point)
1Q: 10:06 MIA - Fred Banks 64 pass from Dan Marino (Pete Stoyanovich extra point)
1Q: 02:28 MIA - Bill Richmond 37 pass from Dan Marino (Pete Stoyanovich extra point)
2Q: 06:17 NOS - Ethan Horton 9 pass from Trent Green (Morten Andersen extra point)
2Q: 06:09 MIA - Louis Oliver 98 kickoff return (Pete Stoyanovich extra point)
2Q: 02:12 NOS - Eric Martin 16 pass from Trent Green (Morten Andersen extra point)
3Q: 09:02 MIA - Robert Green 9 run (Pete Stoyanovich extra point)
3Q: 00:54 MIA - Robert Green 3 run (Pete Stoyanovich extra point)
4Q: 07:36 NOS - Eric Martin 22 pass from Trent Green (Morten Andersen extra point)
4Q: 04:11 NOS - Eric Martin 85 pass from Trent Green (Morten Andersen extra point)
4Q: 00:04 NOS - Morten Andersen 25 field goal

But nooooo! New Orleans gained 595 yards, 517 yards worth from the right arm of Trent Green. The Dolphins running backs could not get it going to close out the game. Sadness for all Fins fans.

Final: New Orleans 38 Miami 35
