CLCS Game 1:

Rodney Madden pitches for Washington vs Juan Rodriguez for London

Washington and London trade runs in both the 1st and 4th inning to keep things tied until the 6th when the Freedom pull into the lead on a RBI single from Tsuneo Aoshima.

London responds with two RBI singles in the bottom of the 8th, from Perez and Ruiz to take the 4-3 lead.

Aoshima gets on with a single in the 9th for Washington, but that is all they can manage and London pulls out the win in game one.

Aoshima is perfect for the day, going 4 for 4 with a double, HR and 2 RBI in the loss for Washington. London's starting pitcher Juan Rodriguez pitches 8 innings, striking out 7 and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits for the win.

London 4, Washington 3

RLCS Game 1:

Mauro Morales pitches for Spring vs Marcos Gonzales for Virginia Beach

Mauro Morales, might be the best pitcher in baseball right now, but the "Exorcist" has demons of his own when it comes to postseason play. He is 2-4 with an ERA over 4 in the postseason for his career.

He doesn't pitch that badly in this game however, as he gives up an RBI single to Marcos Rodriguez in the 5th and a RBI single to Mauro Ramos in the bottom of the 8th as the only runs scored against him.

Morales pitches 7.1 innings, and strikes out 5 while giving up those 2 runs on 6 hits, but his offense fails him in this game as Gonzalez pitches an amazing game for Virginia Beach.

Gonzalez pitches a complete game 2-hit shutout, striking out 9 Spring Lions and the Surf go on to win game 1 at home.

Virginia Beach 2, Spring 0

Gonzáles Stops Spring Cold
Sunday, September 28th, 1969: Marcos Gonzáles dominated Spring with a brilliant 2-hit shutout in the Surf 2-0 triumph at Field of the Surf. The Virginia Beach hurler fanned 9 and walked 1 in the game.

His record this season is 8-15 in 32 starts and Gonzáles has a 5.74 ERA.

CLCS Game 2:

Miguel Sanchez pitches for Washington vs Carlos Juarez for London

This one starts slowly, the first run being scored in the top of the 3rd by Washington, but once that run crossed the plate, the flood gates opened and this one was a run away by the 7th inning.

Bob Alexander goes 2 for 2 with a HR, 3 RBI and thirdbaseman Ray Allen goes 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI in the win for Washington.

The Freedom's starting pitcher Miguel Sanchez pitches 7 innings of 5-hit shut out ball to get the win.

Washington 12, London 1

The CLCS is tied up 1 game each.

RLCS Game 2:

Jorge Perez for Spring vs Allen Hansen for Virginia Beach

Spring gets their first run of the series in the first inning thanks to a RBI single from Zaragoza. That is the only run that they get however as Hansen locks it down after that, going 7.2 innings, striking out 11 and giving up only that one run on 5 hits.

Virginia Beach gets single runs in the 4th, 5th and 8th innings to once again eek out a win in a close game.

Virginia Beach 3, Spring 1

Virginia beach leads the RLCS 2 games to 0.

CLCS Game 3:

Matt Hicks pitches for London vs Stephen Allen for Washington

Washington gets a RBI double from Aoshima in the first, 2-run HR from Sosa in the third, Solo HR from Alexander in the 4th and another solo HR from Alexander in the 6th to put the Freedom up 5-0 after 6 innings.

In the top of the 7th, the Bishops offense finally shows up in the form of a Jose Salas 3-run HR which is part of a 4 run inning that cuts their deficit to 1.

In the 8th, London scores 3 more runs, on RBI singles from Rivas and Sousa that puts the Bishops ahead 7-5. London gets an insurance run in the 9th to put the game away.

London 8, Washington 6

London leads the series 2 games to 1.

I don't know what it is about Morales, but as good as he is in the regular season, he just never wins in the post season. I know here he didn't get run support, but still. It seems year in and out that I get this same result with him.

RLCS game 3:

Scott Knowles pitches for Virginia Beach vs Robinson Chavez for Spring

Virginia Beach gets the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly from Clark in the first. Spring ties it back up in the third however with a Steve Hill solo HR.

The Lions take only their second lead of the entire RLCS in the 4th on another solo HR, this time from Plourde and Spring goes up 2-1.

Bob Clark returns the favor however in the 8th with a 2-run shot of his own that puts Virginia beach up 3-2 and threatens to put Spring down 3-0 in the series.

In the bottom of the 9th, Virginia Beach brings in Conrad Carey to try to save the 1-run lead. The first batter up is Raphael Plourde who tatoos a 2-2 pitch 443 feet to tie the game up in one swing. Spring does not manage to get any other runs across, but they did tie up the score and force extra innings!

Both sides go 1-2-3 in the 10th. In the 11th, Virginia Beach gets a single but not much else. Spring gets a walk and a Hit batter to put two runners on with only one out. A strikeout and popup ends the threat however.

In the 12th, Virginia Beach once again gets a single but nothing else, while Spring goes down 1-2-3.

Both sides go down 1-2-3 in the 13th and 14th innings.

In the 15th, Virginia Beach once again gets a lone single and nothing else. In the bottom of the inning, Koyama is hit by a pitch with one out to get a free base. A Balk from the reliever Marcos Figueroa sends Koyama to second. A Steve Hill single gets him over to third and with only one out SPring has runners on the corners. Bob Bray steps up to the plate next for Spring. He swings on an 0-1 pitch and hits it lazily to left field. It is caught by the left fielder for the second out of the inning, but the runner at third tags and attempts to make it home.. The throw to the plate... and the runner is........ SAFE! Spring wins in the bottom of the 15th!

Spring 4, Virginia Beach 3 (15 innings)

Virginia Beach leads the series 2 games to 1.

Draft Pool is revealed.. the pitcher selections seem kind of crappy to me. The hitters have quite alot of depth. One hitter who I won't name I swear looks like a sure future hall of famer. Only one thing that I wish was better about him and then he would perhaps be one of the best prospects I had ever seen in a draft.

CLCS Game 4:

Juan Rodriguez pitches for London (1-0 3.38 ERA this postseason)
vs
Chandler Butler for Washington

Washington scores 4 in the 2nd and 3 in the 3rd and the game got out of control from there.

Butler pitches 7 innings of 2-hit ball, allowing no runs and striking out 6 for Washington to get the win.

Washington's Juan Marrero hits the game's only Home run as he goes 3 for 4 with a HR, 3 RBI and 3 Runs scored, but despite only 1 homer Washington still scores 15 runs on 14 hits.

Washington 15, London 0

The CLCS is tied up 2 games each.

RLCS game 4:

Jing-xiang Thien pitches for Virginia Beach
vs
Mauro Morales for Spring (0-1 2.45 ERA this postseason)

Virginia Beach scores first with two runs in the 4th on a Rodriguez RBI double and Carney RBI single. Spring gets one back in the bottom of the inning on a Preston RBI single, but still trail 2-1.

The Surf score another in the 7th when Barry hits an RBI single to go up 3-1 but the Lions roar back in the bottom of the inning on a RBI double from Hill and RBI single from Lamb and Spring takes their first lead of the game 4-3.

Virginia Beach ties it in the top of the 8th with a Carney RBI single, but Winston Preston puts Spring back ahead in the bottom of the inning with a 427 foot solo Home RUn.

Virginia Beach gets two singles to start the 9th, but they can not get anything else and Spring holds on to win the game. Rincon gets the win for Spring, not Morales.

Spring 5, Virginia Beach 4

The RLCS is tied up 2-2.

An interesting note, right before the playoff game that Morales pitched, it was announced that he had come to an agreement with Spring to extend his contract for another 4 years at $11,462,000 per year.

Perhaps the contract discussions have been distracting him this postseason and now they are out of the way, he can buckle down and finally pitch like he did in the regular season!

CLCS Game 5:

Juarez pitches for London (0-1 7.72 ERA this postseason)
vs
Madden for Washington (0-1 4.70 ERA this postseason)

Washington's offense keeps on clicking as they get two home runs from Marrero and other home runs from Guzman, Rios and Allen and once again cruise to an easy win after going up 4-0 early in the game.

Madden pitches 7 innings, striking out 7 and allowing only 1 Earned run on 5 hits in the win.

Washington 7, London 1

Washington leads the series 3 games to 2.

RLCS game 5:

Gonzales pitches for Virginia Beach (1-0 0.00 ERA this postseason)
vs
Perez for Spring (0-1 3.00 ERA this postseason)

Up until now the home team had won every game in the Republic League Championship series this season. This game appears to be a bit more wild however.

Virginia Beach starts off with the lead, scoring 4 in the second and 3 in the 6th to go up 7-2. Spring comes back with 1 in the bottom of the 6th and 4 more in the 7th to tie the game up 7-7 after 7 innings!

Virginia Beach scores 5 more in the 8th to go back into the lead 12-7. Spring gets 1 in the 8th and trail 12-8 as they enter the bottom of the 9th....

Michael Reid stays in to pitch for Virginia Beaxch in the 9th and he starts it off by walking Lamb. Plourde follows by flying out to Rightfield but then preston hits a 2-run HR to pull Spring within 2!

Virginia Beach brings Carey in to try to close out the game. He gets Zaragoza to swing at a 3-0 pitch which he grounds out back to the pitcher for the second out of the inning. Anthony steps up to bat as a pinch hitter and he swings at the very first pitch he sees, flying out easily to left field to end the game.

Virginia Beach 12, Spring 10

Virginia Beach leads the series 3 games to 2.

Washington scores 5 in the 3rd and another in the 4th to go up 6-0 before London finally gets on the board in the bottom of the 4th.

London scores 3 more runs in the 7th to pull within 2, but that is all they can manage and Washington goes on to win.

Sosa goes 2 for 5 with a double, triple and 2 RBI while Aoshima hits 3 for 5 with a RBI for Washington

Washington 6, London 4

The 1969 FOOL-X Classic is set!

Washington Freedom (87-75) vs Virginia Beach Surf (92-71)

This is the first time these two teams have ever met as this is Washington's first trip to the FOOL-X Classic. This is the 4th time Virginia Beach has made the Classic, as they were the FOOL-X champions in both 1962 and 1963. This is their first trip however since 1965.

The Continental League has also won the last 5 FOOL-X Classics. The last time a Republic League team did win was Virginia Beach back in 1963.

Washington scores 3 in the first on a RBI triple from Lawson, Sac fly from Sosa and then Aoshima triples and scores on the following batter.

London scores 1 in the bottom of the 2nd, 1 in the bottom of the 4th and then finally ties the game in the bottom of the 7th with one more.

Washington goes down 1-2-3 in the 9th, Virginia Beach starts off the bottom of the 9th with a single from Ramos who is pinch ran for by Takahashi. Takahashi is bunted over to second by Crawford and then Ramos reaches base when he is hit by a pitch.

With 2 on and only 1 out, Carney lines a single to centerfield, but it is hit hard enough that Takahashi gets stopped at third base. The bases are loaded however with only one out.

Ryan, up to bat next strikes out and then Barry grounds out to end the threat and we head to extra innings.

Washington leads off the 10th with a double, but never advances past second base.

In the bottom of the 10th, Clark leads off reaching base thanks to an error by the third baseman.. he advances to second on the error. Parlee grounds out to second, but Clark makes it over to third with only one out.

Parker is intentionally walked to try to set up the double play... with Lee up next, he doesn't hit into a double play but he does pop out to the third baseman in foul territory for the second out of the inning.

Erik Crawford steps up with 2 outs and grounds one torwards second... and it is through to the outfield. Clark scores easily and Virginia Beach pulls out the win in extra innings!

Virginia Beach 4, Washington 3 (10 innings)

Virginia Beach leads the series 2 games to 0.

Washington scores 1 in the 1st and 4 more in the third to go up 5-1 early in the game. Virginia Beach comes back with 6 in the 7th to take the 7-5 lead, but Washington responds with 4 in the bottom of the inning to put them back ahead 9-7.

A Bob Clark RBI double scores 2 for Virginia Beach in the top of the 8th to tie us up 9-9 and after neither team can get much happening in the 9th, we head once again to extra innings!

The Surf go down 1-2-3 in the 10th, Washington gets two runners on, but can't capitalize on it.

In the 11th, Virginia Beach goes 1-2-3 again and Washington also once again gets 2 base runners but can't score.

In the 12th, it is Virginia Beach's turn to have two base runners both stranded. Washington gets a lead off single from Hall in the bottom of the inning, who is bunted to second and then scores on a game winning RBI double from Neil Smith.

Washington wins the first FOOL-X Classic game in franchise history!

Washington 10, Virginia beach 9 (12 innings)

Barry ends the game hitting 3 for 6 with a HR and 3 RBI for Virginia Beach while Rios goes 2 for 4 with a double, HR and 3 RBI for Washington in the loss.

Virginia Beach keeps on pouring on the runs. Jose Gonzalez hits 2 for 3 with a HR and 3 RBI and Crawford goes 2 for 4 with a RBI for Virginia Beach.

Knowles goes 6 innings, striking out 5 and giving up 0 earned runs on 5 hits and gets the win for the Surf.

Virginia Beach finds themselves 1 win away from a championship with a huge lead in the series!

Virginia beach 9, Washington 1

Virginia beach leads the series 4 games to 1.

Classic game 6:

Butler pitches for Washington (1-0 1.80 ERA this postseason)
vs
Thien for Virginia Beach (0-1 4.91 ERA this postseason)

The Surf have outscored Washington thus far in the FOOL-X classic 47 to 20 and the Freedom find themselves needing to win the next 4 games in a row to win now.

The Washington Freedom are the 1969 Continental League Champions!!

Good job Washington!
I went with a 3man rotation this offseason and it was obviously WAY too taxing on my staff against such a good team. They were lights out in the regular season, but on short rest my staff seldom even gave my team a chance to win. Washington made a very good pitching staff their b!tch

Virginia Beach scores first with a run in the bottom of the 1st inning. Washington finally gets their offense on track in the middle of the game however as they score 1 in the 5th, 3 in the 6th and 1 in the 7th.

They don't score a large amount, but they do score enough to win another game. Butler did what he needed to in order to keep his team in the game, going 8 innings, giving up only 2 earned runs on 8 hits.

Allen hits 3 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI and Aoshima goes 2 for 4 with a double and RBI for Washington in the win.

Washington 5, Virginia Beach 3

Virginia Beach leads the series 4 games to 2.

The Surf score 1 in the bottom of the 3rd, Washington scores 1 in the top of the 4th to tie it up and then Virginia Beach goes back into the lead with another run in the bottom of the 4th.

In the 6th, Virginia Beach score again to go up 3-1, but Washington responds with 3 in the top of the next inning to go up 4-3. That is the score into the 9th inning.

Washington gets two singles in the top of the 9th, but a double play helps end the inning before it starts for them.

In the bottom of the 9th, Virginia Beach leads off with a double from Carney who scores later on a Barry RBI single to tie the game up 4-4!

Clark Walks next, but then Parlee grounds out and Parker pops out to end the inning and that means extra innings!

Both teams go down 1-2-3 in the 10th. Both teams get one base runner each in the 11th but no one scores.

In the 12th however Washington leads off with a Single from Sosa who then gets to second base on a passed ball. Aoshima strikes out for the first out of the inning, but then Simovic grounds a ball between third and short for a single! Sosa makes it to third and rounds the bag heading home.. the throw from the left fielder.... is in time he is OUT at the plate!

That was the second out of the inning, but Rios and Simovic both advance to 2nd and 3rd on the throw.

Guzman steps up to bat, but he strikes out and that ends the top of the 12th, Washington squanders their chance there.

In the bottom of the 12th, Parlee strikes out, Parker then draws a walk.

The next hitter, Rafael Ramos decides to crush a pitch 434 feet and that will be all she wrote!

Virginia Beach 6, Washington 4 (12 innings)

The Virginia Beach Surf are the 1969 FOOl-X Champions!!

This is their third championship, tying London for the most in FOOl-X history.
