Sykes Crushes 3 Homers Against Indianapolis
Friday, April 16th, 1971: Bill Sykes of the Mexico City Aztecs had a lot to celebrate in today's 14-3 win over the Indianapolis Clowns. Three times he celebrated by pounding the ball out of Clown Car.

He kiddingly told reporters after the game, "Hopefully, I can continue to close my eyes and swing as hard as I can. It worked well today."

The powerful Mexico City catcher tagged 4 hits in 5 at-bats, drove in 5 runs and scored 4 times in his three-home-run outburst.

Sykes added, "Seriously, I just try to swing early and often to give myself a chance. I let the pitcher supply all the power, I just try to figure out how to get the bat on the ball."

"We talked about changing our strategy for the third one... and then he hit another homer," the Indianapolis manager said. "We just couldn't get him out."

B. Sykes hit a solo-shot off R. Pérez in the 2nd, struck out in the 4th, doubled in the 6th, hit a two-run home run off A. Julien in the 7th and hit a two-run home run off H. Braber in the 8th.

In 14 games this season Sykes has batted at a .390 pace with 23 hits and 8 home runs.

Clark Goes Long 3 Times
Monday, April 19th, 1971: Going... Going... Gone!
Bob Clark did it three times in the Virginia Beach-New York game at Legends Ballpark. Three home runs in one game -- but his team lost -- the Legends outscored the Surf 9-6.

"Gosh, it's a shame we didn't win this game. I get my name in the record book, but we lose the game."

For the day the Virginia Beach right fielder went 3-4 against New York with 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored in a brilliant display of power hitting.

"I was in a groove," he said, "and every pitch they tossed up there looked like a basketball." Commenting after the game to the press, the semi-elated Clark explained, "I tell you what, I was surprised because I didn't think the last ball had enough to get out. I thought it was just going to be a long out."

B. Clark hit a two-run home run off R. Cox in the 2nd, grounded out in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off R. Cox in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off S. Callahan in the 8th.

So far this season Clark is hitting .292 with 11 home runs.

Great Day for Gracía, Hits for Cycle
Thursday, April 22nd, 1971: Lúcio Gracía of the Ann Arbor Wolverines had an amazing day at the plate today in a game against New York. Fans at Ann Arbor Grounds were treated to a hitting spectacle as he hit for the cycle. Yes -- the cycle -- one of baseball's rarest feats and spectator treats. The Ann Arbor center fielder hit them all! The single, double, triple, and home run came during his 4 at-bats as the Wolverines downed the Legends 7-6.

"I would like to say it was skill, but I would be more inclined to say it was some luck, too. Triples are hard to come by."
Gracía finished the day with 4 in 4 tries and raised his batting average a few points. He also had 3 RBI and 3 runs scored.

L. Gracía hit an RBI triple in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit a two-run home run off M. Brown in the 8th.

This year Gracía has hit at a .215 pace and produced 7 RBIs, 1 home run and scored 8 runs.

Franco hits 3 Home Runs in one game, including his 500th of his career, the first 500 Home Run hitter in FOOL-X history

Franco Gets #500
Sunday, April 25th, 1971: New York's 10-8 victory over Cleveland was highlighted by Esteban Franco's 500th career home run. His teammates congratulated him at home plate after he circled the bases.

"I didn't see all of them out there," Franco said with a chuckle, "until I rounded third base." He added sheepishly: "It was only a home run. It's not like I won us a World Series!"

In 4 at-bats the Legends right fielder collected 4 hits in his historic game, scored 3 runs, and had 3 runs batted in.

Lifetime Franco has played in 1649 games with a .316 batting average. Among his 2045 hits are 199 doubles, 35 triples and 502 home runs. He also has scored 1424 runs and driven in 1395 runs.

Franco Slams 3 Deep for New York
Sunday, April 25th, 1971: Fans seated in the bleacher section at Legends Ballpark were taking cover all day long as Esteban Franco took aim, rattling three long blasts off the seats in a display of Herculean power. Days like this are rare. After his amazing performance in New York's 10-8 triumph over the Cleveland Naps, the right fielder's name will soon be added into the record books.

He told reporters at the postgame press conference, "I told myself not to press on the last one. I knew I couldn't force it... that it has to be a nice easy swing."

For the game he collected 4 hits in 4 at-bats, batted in 3 and scored 3 runs.

E. Franco doubled in the 1st, walked in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off D. Payne in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off D. Payne in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off Á. Álvarez in the 8th.

So far this season Franco has 13 home runs and a .277 batting average.

Vázquez Scorches Grocers for 3 HR
Thursday, April 29th, 1971: Ricardo Vázquez, third baseman for the New York Legends, had a whale of a game, rocketing three balls out of Legends Ballpark against the Portland Grocers today in their 15-12 victory.

After the game he said, "I got some good pitches to hit and I creamed them. The first was a big, fat fastball and the last two were hanging curves... all three were mistakes."

For the game Vázquez was 3-5 with 8 RBIs and 3 runs scored.

Vázquez added, "There's a fine line between hitting home runs and line drives. Today I found the home run stroke."

R. Vázquez hit a three-run home run off Á. Reyes in the 2nd, struck out in the 3rd, grounded out in the 5th, hit a two-run home run off Á. Reyes in the 7th and hit a three-run home run off C. García in the 8th.

This year Vázquez is hitting .278 with 12 home runs.

Franco Wins RL's Best Bat Trophy
Saturday, May 1st, 1971: To survive in the bigs, you've got to be a scrapper like Esteban Franco. It never pays to take a day off from the batting cages or to shrug off the advice of the hitting coach. It all paid off today as New York's right fielder pinned down the Republic League Batter of the Month trophy today.

He hit .313 in April collecting 17 home runs, 24 RBIs and 32 runs scored.

CL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Saturday, May 1st, 1971: Bob Webb was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 24-year-old second baseman definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen April's Continental League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 28 games Webb batted .325 for Mexico City, slapping 37 hits in 114 at-bats with 2 home runs, drove in 9 runs and scored 24 times.

Yes.. he is on pace for 98 home runs this year.

I'm thinking that pace won't continue. His teammate Vazquez is on pace for 75 right now.

It is mostly due to New York playing a large number of home games in April (18 to only 10 road games). New York's ballpark is a freakin wind tunnel to right field.

The more impressive part I think is 17 home runs for only 24 RBIs? I don't think anyone is getting on base in front of him.

Spring Comes up Empty Against Madden
Sunday, May 30th, 1971: Rodney Madden was sneaky fast, on the mark and hard to hit today. He blanked the Spring Lions 1-0 on 4 hits and had 1 walk and 11 strikeouts.

"You know what he's going to throw. You know what to expect. And you still can't hit it," the Spring skipper told reporters after the shutout loss to the Ann Arbor Wolverines.

"He just had a real deceiving fastball today and he was throwing it for strikes."

His record this year is 2-5 in 10 starts and Madden has a 6.02 ERA.

Rookie Second Baseman Honored by RL
Tuesday, June 1st, 1971: A veritable toddler to the Republic League, Lachlan Krajancic just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for May.

Over the past month the 25-year-old second baseman for Ann Arbor hit .316 with 24 hits, 1 home run and 8 RBI. He also logged 5 walks and compiled a .366 on-base percentage.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month
Tuesday, June 1st, 1971: Bob Webb is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Mexico City hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .267 average with 28 hits, no home runs and 5 RBIs.

So far on the season Webb is hitting .297 with 2 home runs, 14 RBIs and 42 runs scored. He has 65 hits and played in 57 games.

Washington Snaps Sánchez's Streak at 27
Thursday, June 3rd, 1971: Héctor Sánchez saw his 27-game hitting streak wither and die today during the Resettlers 5-2 victory over Washington at Freedom Field. The 29-year-old shortstop was held hitless in 5 at-bats by Freedom, but his Boston teammates produced enough offense to garner the win.

Talking to reporters after the game, Sánchez was upbeat. "Am I disappointed about the hit streak? Maybe, just a little bit. How could you be unhappy after you have hit in 27 straight games? I'm just glad it lasted as long as it did. And I am really happy that we won another ballgame today. Life is good."

This season Sánchez is batting .316 with 22 RBIs, 41 runs scored and 2 home runs.

Morales Twirls Shutout
Friday, June 25th, 1971: "I had everything working for me out there. I used every one of my pitches, hit both sides of the plate really well and felt like I could do whatever I wanted."

With stuff like that, it was easy for Mauro Morales of the Lions to handcuff the Grocers 5-0 and come away with a complete-game 2-hit shutout. He recorded 12 strikeouts and 1 walk in an impressive performance.

For the season Morales has logged 13 wins and 5 losses and struck out 124 batters in 146 innings while compiling a 1.97 ERA.

Ramsey Gets 300th Home Run
Tuesday, June 29th, 1971: At Resettlers Ballpark Ken Ramsey smashed his 300th career home run in a game against Boston today. The 38-year-old first baseman had a hand in the Indianapolis Clowns 11-4 victory with 1 home run and 5 RBI. For the day he went 3 hits-5 at-bats.

At the press conference after the game, Ramsey downplayed his achievement.

"Obviously, I've hit 300 home runs so I belong in that 300 club. But when you talk about the other guys that have done it, I'm not as good as they were. Those guys were the greatest of all time. I've just been able to scrape together some good years and stayed healthy and gotten there."

Lifetime Ramsey has connected for 300 home runs, hit .300 and driven in 1215 runs.
