I wouldn't put either one of them on it. Not enough depth of talent, IMO. Also, Geno is a scumbag.

I agree, just kind of see them as hand in hand when it comes to womens CBB.

Wooden would be my #1 in college, but there's got to be some love for Bob Knight. Helluva coach.

Football: Lombardi/Brown

College Football: Bryant, Paterno, Osbourne

Can't really consider pro basketball because it's more about having the great players. Auerbach won because he simply had a greater team than anyone else. Jackson, while a good coach, has benefited of having 3 of the greatest players of all time. Hard to judge coaches there.

Don't know enough about hockey/baseball.

What sport isn't about having the best players? Football, Baseball, College Basketball, etc.. the coaches that won the most titles generally had the best players.

maybe not the mt. rushmore but how about the revolutionary road? guys that changed the way the game was played. off the top of my head.

basketball:chuck daly- his pistons ushered in the era of defense in the nba

football:
bill walsh- west coast off.
bill parcells- LT as a pass rusher in the 3-4 completely changed the way defense was played. suddenly, left tackle was the second most important position on offense. also, his clock eating ball possession offense.

soccer: rinus michels- clockwork oranje of the 70's. 'total football' and the offside trap.

baseball: whitey herzog. small ball. fast defensive minded players. manufacturing runs.

True, but several times the the best NFL team hasn't ended up winning the SB, where usually the best NBA team ends up doing well. That's part of the series format as compared to the one and done of football and college basketball...it's tougher there to be a great coach and win consistently because of that. Even with the unbalanced leagues of the 60s and 70s, what Wooden did is still remarkable.

In some aspects, I think you can argue that college is tougher to coach because its critical that they develop while there.

That being said, Larry Brown deserves some love. Making the finals with Iverson and then winning with Detroit?

He is a NASCAR owner not a coach. The Crew Chief would most closely, IMO, resemble a coach.

For all the several comments that baseball managers, impact the outcome less than their other sport counterparts, Id have to disagree strongly. When Phil Jackson takes Kobe out for a breather he doesn't lose him for the rest of the game. The fact alone that there are no chances to reverse player decision to me magnifies the importance of the decision 10 fold. Furthermore there are frankly more decisions I think in a game than any sport except football. And finally, the fact that the game is slower and allows time for thought and decision making versus shear reaction also opens them up to more scrutiny.


All that said I am far from a baseball mark, actually can hardly stand the game anymore but I dont think managers can be discounted in whole without consideration.

All that said my four:
Coack K (I hate the man but the fact that he just won with THAT team alone, puts him up here)
Parcells (He has done it everywhere, and never failed)
Landry (Revolutionized the player evaluation process and brought the NFL to the modern era)
Jackson (Sure he had the talent but Michael never won one without him, neither did Kobe)

Chad Knaus (Another one I hate but hard to argue his success)
Bobby Cox (Consistently good with average talent)
Joe Torre (For those who question hiss ability look at the Dodgers pre and post Torre)
