FOF2k4 7th round draft picks: stories

My favorite feature of Fido's FOFreporter is to look at the draft lists and discover what happened to players I've had on my roster or I've drafted. I mustn't have thought much of this guy after drafting him in the 7th round:

I was very surprised to see that he held on for so long. I guess he developed enough to be of interest of many teams (and to start 77 games!) but not enough to get a long-term contract. I'd love to see a dynasty made about the 7th-round picks in a career - what happen to them who manage to stick around? I'd be nice to see if one of them could make the Pro Bowl or win several Super Bowls.

I picked up a nice breakout WR in the 7th round a few years ago.He went from looking like camp fodder to being a solid #3, who could maybe work his way into the starting lineup. He did get a chance to start 2 years later, then blew out his knee and was a shell of his former self. Sadly, I had to cut him in year 4.

He was my first memorable breakout, and I felt crushed when he was injured.

BTW, I lean so heavy towards free agency in FOF2004 that it's insane. I would say I make an average of 2-3 draft picks per year.

I had a perennial Pro bowl center named Don Zumdahl whom I picked in the 7th round. I don't have his stats handy, but he was 1st team Center like 8 out of 10 years or something like that.

I think your player's career stats show how the computer seems to be letting too many players leave in FOF2004, only to replace them with similarly-skilled guys. I mean, that guy played for like 11 teams in his career!

I've even seen star players who have bounced from team to team throughout their careers. Either their demands are too high, or CPU teams aren't signing enough players to multi-year deals.

This remains my biggest problem with the game. I try to bring this up every now and then (but I lack the board credibility to draw any attention to it). I get no immersion in the game because all the AI teams completely redefine themselves every year or two. Sure, building my team is fun ... but I'd much prefer to be in a league with more identity than a bunch of fantasy football rosters.

Lack of year-to-year continuity had me put this game away about a week after I got it.

(p.s. No, changing the inflation rate does not solve this for me )

Just a matter of taste I guess, but I've been a little surprised that I get no traction at all whenever I raise this.

I agree with you 100% on this and have mentioned it too. Although I didn't put the game away because of it, after about five years into a career I start seeing too much of it and either stop playing or start over.

I cant post screens but this last season i drafted a RB in the 7th round named Rob Hayes. I drafted him just to fill out my roster and after training camp i was very surprised to find that Rob had turned into a very solid back. 88 breakaway speed, 88 power running, 91 hole rec, 72/85 Elusiveness, 60 speed to outside, 0 on 3rd down running and it just so happens i got another back on my roster who was a 95 in 3rd down running and became my 3rd down back to start the season. After 5 games Rob struggled to just 1.8 yards per carry and was moved to the backup RB where he still picked up very good numbers. His end of the year numbers were 156 attempts for 786 yards 5 tds, 5.0 yards per carry. He seemed to come on at the end of the season and really helped raise his yards per carry. Most importanly my #1 back went down in the final game of the season which we ended up winning to finish 11-5 and get in as a wildcard. The wildcard round we found ourselves @ Tampa Bay where Rob ran for 95 yards on 16 carries or 6.0 yards per carry and 1 TD as we won 24-17. The next round we played @ 14-2 Philly the team the won our division. Rob runs for 114 yards on 18 carries 6.3 yards per and 2 tds in a 31-21 victory. The league championship game found us on the road @ Seattle where Rob runs for 92 yards on 20 carries 4.6 yards per, but never found the endzone. We won that game 17-13 to advance to the Front Office Bowl on 3 straight road games. In the Front Office Bowl Rob gains 116 yards on 26 carries 4.4 per and a rushing td. He also caught a td pass as we win the championship 24-23 on a field goal with 18 secs left. After the season I cut my former feature back and am starting my 7th round pick 18 player i took the year before
