1985 MLB Season Replay (SOM Style)

General Notes:

The 1985 season replay is ready to roll. A few notes before we get started:

- I am not trying to do an "As Played" simulation, in fact I can't. The 1985 season disk i have doesn't have every player that participated so there are quite a few gaps that have to be filled.

- I have tried to limit over-usage as much as i can, and especially where limited sample size players could have a significant impact on results if allowed to spam the league. However, like the note mentioned above - that doesn't mean some players won't get more playing time and those players could impact the overall results

- Some teams are going to be very limited in some areas, commonly the bullpen. Because so many teams in 1985 allowed starters to pitch in relief, the number of arms available in the pen is often small. This is a problem because by scheduling all the rotations for the season there is no way for the game to know to "protect" a pitcher because they have a start coming up. This means I effectively have to set the pitcher to not be allowed to relieve, which in turn cuts the number of arms available in the pen down. So if you see some bullpen pitchers with high inning totals, that is probably why.

- I loaded the schedule from retrosheet so it is the real one that was used.

- I don't do all-star games in the middle of the season, I do them at the end and I make it a best of 7 series, there is a mid season break though.

- I have injuries turned on, but to the best of my recollection, the game only does up to 15 games.

- I'm using max rules - Weather, Clutch, Pitch Fatigue, etc.

- I've run several test seasons to insure i don't have any severe usage problems, and based on results i would be surprised if all 4 of the real division winners come out on top in this replay. In fact, all 4 have lost multiple times in my test runs.

- I am not planning to get actively involved in the games. The plan is for the games to auto-play. Any adjustments I might make would be in changing the team set up configuration, or picking a spot starter in the event of an injury.

OPENING DAY

Welcome to Opening Day in Cincinnati, where the 1985 season will get underway. Today we have Montreal in town and here is their lineup:

General Update

With just the one game in the NL on 4/1, I didn't see a need to post the newspaper style updates.

This is basically how I was planning to post results, as if you were reading them in the paper on a daily basis. I wasn't planning to post box scores from every team/every game - that would be a bit much. I was also planning to do a "game of the week" (or maybe more frequently), where you will get the write up like the one for the Expos v Reds above. I'm planning to get caught up with the real date today and then roll through the schedule 1 day at a time. If you have any suggestions or requests let me know and I'll see what I can do.

The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings. Chicago came out the victor in the 11th inning. Oscar Gamble drew a walk. Bob Gibson then let a pitch get away from him. Daryl Boston then doubled scoring the run. Both teams ended up with 10 on the afternoon. Spillner(1-0) went 4 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Gibson(0-1) suffered the loss in relief. Cowens provided much of the offense. He cracked a two-run shot (his 1st of the season) in the 3rd inning and doubled with all three runners coming home in the 4th inning. Seattle bats were very productive in the 4th inning with 6 runs on 4 hits and the 7th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 5 hits. Seattle dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different innings. Moore(1-0) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 4 runs. The losing pitcher was Chris Codiroli(0-1). He was knocked around by Seattle, allowing 10 hits and 3 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

The score was 10 to 2. Oakland never recovered after Seattle took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning scoring 3 runners on 2 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Alvin Davis who made the Seattle fans a happy lot when he smacked a three-run homer (his 2nd of the season). Seattle banged out 9 on the afternoon. The victory was credited to Roy Thomas(1-0) who went 6 innings, allowing 1 run. Tim Birtsas(0-1) took the loss. Seattle scored big getting 7 runs off him in 3 innings.

Texas had 5 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 3rd inning with the help of 7 hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. Texas kept the scorekeepers busy in the 3rd inning when they had 5 runs on 7 hits and the 4th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 3 hits. Texas dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different innings. The winning pitcher was Hough(2-0) who allowed 4 runs for the game. Moose Haas(0-1) was hit with the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 6 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.

He didn't allow much, just 6 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings. Pittsburgh had 13 hits overall, while St. Louis had 6. Kurt Kepshire(0-1) was charged with the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 10 hits and 3 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings. Whitey Herzog was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.'

The game was deadlocked at 8 after nine full innings. Texas won the game in the 18th inning. Oddibe McDowell laced a single. Toby Harrah followed and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Pete O'Brien then was walked intentionally. McDowell stole third and scored when the ball ended up in the outfield giving Texas the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. Milwaukee had 22 hits in the game while Texas had 14, but Texas had the more timely hits. Chris Welsh(1-0) went 2 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Bob Gibson(0-2) ended up with the loss in relief. He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in his 1 and 2/3 innings of work.

Mark Bailey next to the plate and he drew a walk. Mumphrey then tripled resulting in an exciting win for Houston and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Houston managed 8 in their victory. Ryan(2-0) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. The right-handed Ryan lost his no-hit bid when Rick Schu doubled with nobody out in the 6th inning. John Denny(0-2) suffered the loss. Ryan was jubilant in the hometown clubhouse, 'It was a lot of fun out there. The fans gave me a lot of support as did my teammates. We got the victory and I'll sure take 12 strikeouts anytime!' The New York fans didn't appreciate the big day Redus had. He smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 4th inning, doubled resulting in a run in the 6th inning and blasted a solo shot (his 2nd of the season) in the 8th inning. Cincinnati banged out 9 on the afternoon. The win was credited to Soto(1-0) who went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs. Soto got help from Ted Power who earned his 1st save. Dwight Gooden(1-1) absorbed the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 8 innings of work. Soto, when asked about his 10 strikeout performance noted, 'The important thing is that we won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team? But, on the other hand, since we won it feels great!' ST. LOUIS AT PITTSBURGH Cardinals....... 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 0 0 - 2 10 0 Pirates......... 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 - 1 6 0 Win:Andujar(1-0) Loss:Rhoden(0-1) Save:Lahti(1st) Homeruns- B.Almon(1st) Joaquin Andujar(1-0) and Rick Rhoden(0-1) treated the Pittsburgh fans to a fine pitching duel at THREE RIVERS STADIUM. The St. Louis Cardinals eventually emerged as victors over the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 2 to 1. Andujar pitched a solid game. He went 5 innings surrendering 3 hits and no walks lowering his ERA to 2.70. Pittsburgh threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Andujar got help from Jeff Lahti who was credited with his 1st save. Chuck Tanner was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one, we just made one too many mistakes. Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple more white hairs on this noggin of mine.'
