Front Office Football, Version 8.1 Released
OCTOBER 24 - SOLECISMIC
Front Office Football Eight has been updated to Version 8.1. New games now default to using the new 2017 player file and coach file, and use the 2017 schedule.

This update "moves" the San Diego franchise to the Los Angeles area for new careers. In order to have this reflected in new careers, you will need to delete the files beginning with frfoot.* in the universe folder where saved games are stored (see the FAQ at solecismic.com for instructions on how to find this folder if you're not already familiar with saved games).

There are also a few minor AI tweaks, bug fixes and interface enhancements. Nothing earth-shattering. None of this will affect saved games. The only bug fixes relate to removing players from IR and a couple of penalty decision quirks. The biggest AI tweaks relate to late-game defensive calls (this is very tricky for many reasons), AI passing targets and classification of offensive play styles.

Oh, and overtime during the regular season is now ten minutes long. This will greatly increase the rate of tie games.

You can continue existing careers without any disruption. Thanks again for supporting Solecisimic Software. Almost 20 years now!

Perhaps the end of half and game defensive logic will improve that looks to be the biggest one.

Maybe not a huge one, but definitely noticeable. The number of 1000-yard receivers in a Rex environment has increased significantly.

He took my suggestion and put a play counter in both gameplan screens. Plus, now you can exclude your starting olineman for special teams.

This patch is a big upgrade in my eyes. Way too go Jim.

8.0d, after 81 seasons--only 11 seasons of 1,500 receiving yards or more

8.1, after just 34 seasons--31 seasons of 1,500 yards or more

this means some recalibration -- I'll try to figure out if this was done mainly by decreasing the impact of endurance on WRs.

We won a blowout today and subs went in at QB and on D in the late 3rd quarter (27-0 looks like switch happened with 5:25 left in 3rd), turned out alright but could have been problematic given the screwy sub logic playing guys out of position. Guess time will tell...

What this means? No more Cover-1 in the 2 minute drill??

From what I have seen Cover-2 now seems more often which is a significant improvement.

wow this very much appreciated, great support of the game.

I started a new save on 8.1 and was looking at the new coaches file. I'm seeing some strange things, such as a letter being cut off every first/last name of every coach, a head coach for Akron (?) named "1 2 3", and a few other things.

Is everyone seeing the same thing? want to make sure before sending it in, maybe something got screwed up in my update.

There was another update early this morning from Steam. Mine still says 8.1. Any idea what was fixed in that?

Oh, I see. Apparently just some "real file" stuff I don't care about. Staff.fdt was updated at 4:06am. Nothing else. *shurg*

EDIT: Just read back a few posts. I'm guessing this fixes whatever that was.

cool to see the updated stadiums/franchise movement file. Vikings and Falcons have their new stadiums, Rams are at the Coliseum with new stadium to be completed 2020, Chargers at Stubhub until new stadium in 2020, Raiders approved to move to Las Vegas in 2020.

nice to see the late-game defensive call updated. I had used a complicated workaround to avoid man2man and cover 1 in the final 2 minutes, but the fix uses mostly cover 2 for 113 personnel.

I would expect more blowout games in MP, large point differentials, and better defensive performances for those who are game planning on D.

FYI, for those of you who do not like the mouse hover, there now is this option: "Menu change requires click rather than hovering".

This option can be found under choose/edit display options.

This is great, thanks for finding it. It makes it feel right now, saves the interface for me.

Well, like anything in life once you get familiar with something it feels weird trying to go back to what "was" the norm. I just tried it and I hate it

I prefer the mouse over to change...meh

Isn't the 2 minute drill within the 2 minutes? Those plays are outside of the 2 minutes.

Never really thought about it too deeply, but a click that feels productive and gives me more control is one I am always willing to make I guess.

Within the roster screen, click the Player Attributes/Special Teams button. Click the Offensive Line tab, then right-click any players you don't want on ST. The XS column near the end shows which ones are recommended for ST and which are not.

BTW, I just took a good gander at play fits during TC and holy cow the pass routes now play a significant role in determining fits- i.e. for Ehr-Perk it is hard to find solid or better fits on intermediate and deep routes (5-8).

We were running an intermediate passing game and ended up having to redo a good bit of the playbook to keep our only Solid and better fit thing going.

As with everything FOF, how much does fit matter? Who the heck knows? But a man has to have a code.
