FOFC Draft--The Greatest Music Band (Draft Has Started)

Hey everyone!

Have you ever thought about putting together the best ever music band? Who would you have in your band?

Well, we have ten drafters here who will attempt to answer this question. And after their bands are complete, we will hold a vote to determine which band is the greatest band among the 10.

There will be 10 rounds in this draft, and it will be a serpentine (snake) draft, with the even rounds running in reverse order.

THE CATEGORIES

The idea will be to fill ten main categories. Here are those ten categories:

Main Categories

Lead Singer
Lead Guitarist
Bass Guitarist
Keys
Drummer
Other Instrument
Songwriter
Manager/Producer
Label
Cover Song

You can only have one pick for each category above, and so at the end of the 10 round draft, all ten main categories should be filled.

It's not so easy as just filling those categories, though. You also have to fit those ten picks into the following sub-categories:

Sub-Categories

Rock
Pop
Hip Hop
Country
Female
21st century
1990s
1980s
1970s
1960s & Earlier

You can only use the above sub-categories once as well, so that after your ten have been chosen, all ten of the above sub-categories will have a choice associated with it.

HOW TO DRAFT

When your turn comes up, please bold your selection and enter it with the round number, the pick within that round, the name of the person/entity you are picking, the main category and the sub-category.

So an example, let's say, I am a diehard fan of Justin Bieber, and I am picking first. I would enter:

1.1 Justin Bieber, Lead Singer, 21st Century

With this choice, I have locked down my Lead Singer and taken carry of the 21st Century sub-category.

Please PM the next person up in the draft after you post, so that they will be aware it is their turn to draft.

ADDITIONAL RULES

There are some limitations on your selections.

The obvious one is that no one may pick the same person or entity. If I draft Bieber, no one else gets him. Just like a real draft.

This includes Cover Songs. If a song is covered by multiple bands, it can still only be used once. You can't take Love Rollercoaster by Red Hot Chili Peppers after someone else take Love Rollercoaster by The Ohio Players, for instance.

You are not allowed to use anyone else associated with a musical act after you have made a choice from that act. If you select John Lennon, you can't later select Paul McCartney. This also applies for musicians from multiple bands--if you select Paul McCartney, you cannot later select George Harrison from the Beatles nor Linda McCartney from Wings.

The Label category is an exception, though--you can use a label which published music from one of your other choices. I make this exception simply because selecting nine totally separate acts and forcing a Label selection that avoids all of them seems particularly hard to me.

The musical act limitation is only limited within each drafter's choices. For example, if I choose John Lennon, I cannot choose Paul McCartney, but Abe Sargent could select Paul McCartney if he wanted.

This is all done on the honor system, so please be careful to consider this section when making your choices.

The categories (both main and sub) are intentionally vague and broad, so that you will have as much leeway as possible to make your choices.

The concept behind the time categories is that they are tied to when a musical act/performer had their/his/her first big break. So Led Zeppelin was around in the late 60s, but they didn't hit it big until the 70s, so their most appropriate time category is the 1970s.

If you are looking to choose someone or something which is not shown in the categories above, it is up to you to make it fit where you see it best. For instance, punk under Rock, R&B under Pop, and so forth. In the end, it will be up to the voters to decide if you did a good job with that decision.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I will pose the draft order shortly after putting up this post. The draft will only begin once I let the first drafter know he is up.

Good luck, everyone. May the best band win!

Yes.

You'll have to pick a cover song none of your acts had a hand in. But, hey, there are a lot of choices there.

BTW, as I've done in previous drafts, I consider it good form to PM the next draftee after you've made your pick. I sent one to iKarli.

Yup. I also suggest doing that in the opening post. Hopefully people will do this, so we can keep on a good pace.

Naw, that's just fine. I debated getting into the draft and decided I would have more fun running it. Thanks, though!

I don't want to set a time limit early on, because sometimes it takes a bit at the start for all drafters to get in the swing of being around and providing picks (or lists if they can't be around). Hopefully Karlifornia will be around soon.

If you're in the next few picks after him, though, it might be a good idea to PM me a list long enough to get me to your pick.

Two comments. First, I think you should leave it up to the drafter to pick the genre or time period, regardless if it's "wrong" or not. The voters will vote accordingly, usually penalizing those that chose the wrong category (e.g., still haunted by my pick from a while back). Second, speaking of bad picks and wrong categories, I don't get to abuse Izulde in a draft.

I did expect the ability to be able to choose which time period someone could be in as some artists have had varying success over their long careers, some even getting MORE popular later on. But I kinda like this ruleset too. It makes things easier actually.

And awww no Izulde.

I do kinda hope we have less bashing each other's picks this time around. That somewhat influences the voting.

1.3 Neil Peart, Drummer, 80s
(From the group Rush)

The best damn drummer ever period. Influenced an entire generation of rockers. Used the drums as a melodic instrument as well as a rhythmic machine. And the 80s saw their breakout with Moving Pictures and the megahits (Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, and the perennial instrumental favorite YYZ), Permenent Waves (With Spirit of Radio and Freewill), and they just kept on cranking out brilliant album after brilliant album. Peart's skill of just interchanging time signatures in and out of a song cannot be matched. And use of as many type of percussion instruments as you can think of. Drummers of all shapes and sizes look up to him as the master. He is simply the best.

Had to think about this for a minute then I realized it makes the most sense to use up your rock pick for a drummer. That one is going to be hard to match up otherwise.

There are a few drummers that will be great picks for rock that will need to be grabbed if you want good votes for that category; otherwise, you'll end up picking some session drummer for a Nashville studio, I think.

Love Lennon as a songwriter pick, he was my second choice to Dylan.

For certain Lennon and Dylan are perfect songwriter choices!

I am not taking my chances of missing out on my favorite drummer especially with so many people picking before me second pick.

Great pick with Cash, Abe! He was definitely in my head. Takes care of country nicely!

Surprised so many people went lead singer really.

Hendrix for lead guitar I am ashamed to say I didn't think of.
