2019 Regular Season Thread (Playoffs Wednesday morning 7am ET)

Join me tonight for the regular season. We'll be going month by month listing the updated standings, playoff implications, the monthly league leaders as well as any important news stories as they occur.

We will also re-introduce the mid-year chance to ask how a player is doing for you, to see how that promising young rookie, or the old vet at the end of his career is hanging in there for this season.

Good luck to everyone, hope for an exciting season!

I will be here a little late because I work until 9 pm ET. If I could get an update on SS Orlando Reyes that would be awesome. I'm especially interested to see how his defense is doing. Yay for primetime fake baseball!

Two job day for me, so I will unfortunately be unable to attend. Still, I am glad to see this return, and will look forward to reading it when I get home tonight. I hope we have a good attendance from those league members who are available.

When we get started later can we please confirm that exports have been received? The tracker seems to think I haven't exported.

Dola, I don't complain about it much, but some mornings the sims are fun because I have to try to import a team's file anywhere from 5 to 10 times before it finally takes.

I figured out what the problem was with the exports. I actually have them. One sec and I will update the export tracker. It is totally my fault this time (and not ootp) because I had to re-release the file for that trade.

Woops!

Sweet. I was going to have to kick my girlfriend of the Windows side of the Mac so I could get to the Leopard side to deal with OOTP. She's in the middle of stuff and wouldn't have been thrilled about my intrusion.

My expectation for us? Weak out of the gate, and a steady rise to middle of the pack by end of the year. Hopefully the pitching won't completely implode. My relievers should actually be pretty decent.

Ok, finally got all of the imports to take. I have received a good number of PMs from people in case they sign a player, and they left an empty spot on their roster.

So if it takes a few minutes to get going here, I'm doing admin work. Shouldn't be too too long.

More like getting my ass busted in football. I've only been able to field a winning team once in 8 seasons so far. Its getting frustrating, but with my record here in the new fool, it doesn't seem out of place. I have to get a plan working again here.

I'm a Rangers fan. Unfortunately I live in Houston, which is technically their "market", thereby blacking me out of getting MLB.tv I want to give them money, but they won't give me the product. Stupid MLB. So I'm stuck "watching" most on the mlb.com gamecast thingy.

The big news to start the season is Luis Sowards (Hartford) ended last year with a hitting streak that continues to start this season:

Thursday, April 18th, 2019: Sowards Hits in 37 Straight Games
Today Luis Sowards went 3-for-4 in the Hartford Harpooners 6-3 victory over the Ann Arbor Winged Lingerines. This extended his hitting streak to 37 games. Sowards declined to comment for the media immediately after the game.
L. Sowards grounded out in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 8th and flied out in the 9th.

In 17 games this season Sowards is batting .513 with 40 hits and 2 home runs. He has scored 16 runs and driven in 16.

Sowards almost makes it through the first month before his streak from last year is snapped:

Wednesday, April 24th, 2019: Hitting Streak Stopped at 42 Games
For once, it was the Harpooners picking up Luis Sowards.

Their offensive catalyst, as the Hartford manager calls him, saw his 42-game hitting streak snapped as Sowards was held hitless by the Colorado Rancheros at Harpooners Ballpark. The 27-year-old second baseman went 0-for-4. It should have made for a lousy day, but his teammates picked up the slack and whipped the Rancheros 5-3.

At the press conference after the game, Sowards told reporters, "Everybody did the job but me. No problem, we won the game."

Asked how he felt about the streak ending, he grinned and replied, "It was a good run. I'll try to start another one tomorrow."

This season Sowards is batting .471 with 49 hits, 2 home runs, 16 RBIs, .481 OBP and has scored 18 runs.

Luis Marquez (Chico) is the only other player in FOOL History (dating back to 1961) who has hit in 40+ straight games, when he hit in 44 games back in 2016.

April's Republic League Pitcher of the month is.....

Wednesday, May 1st, 2019: Hasegawa Garners RL #1 Pitcher Award
Ryuichi Hasegawa's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 5-1 in April, the 34-year-old Hammersmith hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 38 in 53 innings, logged an ERA of 2.55 and allowed opponents to hit .244 against him.

The April Continental League Pitcher of the month is...

Wednesday, May 1st, 2019: Valdéz Wins CL Top Pitcher Award
Veteran Cipriano Valdéz put together quite a successful stretch in April for the Baltimore Charm, earning himself the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

Valdéz racked up a 4-2 record in 7 starts, posting a 1.86 ERA over 53.1 innings and striking out 58.

April's Republic League Hitter of the Month is no suprise:

Wednesday, May 1st, 2019: Sowards Named RL Batter of the Month
Luis Sowards battered Republic League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 27-year-old Sowards told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I may not take the field and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 28 games, Sowards hit .488 with 2 home runs, 19 RBIs and scored 23 runs.

The April Continental League Hitter of the Month might actually be a suprise however:

Wednesday, May 1st, 2019: Harrington April's Best Bat Choice
Prospective free agents love to have hot streaks and Marty Harrington is no exception. The Montreal first baseman capped off a fine month by hauling in Batter of the Month honors in the Continental League.

In April Harrington hit .319 with 11 home runs, 31 RBIs and 29 runs scored.

April's Republic League Rookie of the Month:

Wednesday, May 1st, 2019: Republic League Names Rookie of Month
Maurice Beaudin earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Colorado catcher might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Beaudin hit .329 with 1 home run, 8 RBIs and 11 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Can we just rename the RL ROY award the Colorado ROY? I think I had something like 6 consecutive in the old FOOL and now I'm gonna be having a string of guys that should contend for it the next few seasons. ;- )

A great game for Edmonton's Erik Bowden:

Wednesday, May 1st, 2019: Bowden Torches Assassins for 6 Hits
It doesn't happen very often, but it happened for Erik Bowden -- a 6-hit day. He went on a rampage at Edge Ballpark and paced the Edge to a 16-3 win over the Apex Assassins.

After his dynamite batting performance the Edmonton left fielder told the press, "I just tried to get myself in a good count and have a good at-bat. That's all I can control." His philosophy paid some great dividends today. He slammed 6 hits in 6 tries and put his name in the record book.

E. Bowden singled in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off M. Horton in the 4th, hit an RBI double in the 5th, hit a two-run single in the 6th, singled in the 8th and hit a three-run home run off R. Robison in the 9th.
