Is it too early to start the .400 watch for Hartford's Brennan Ward? There has only been three players in FOOL history to ever hit .400 for a season, one of which was a technicality when Barry Holmes of Chicago hit .3995 in 1998. oddly enough, he did hit .401 the following season as well but did not get enough at bats to qualify for the batting title! Bob Mahoney of Boston also hit .400 on the nose in 1998.

The all time FOOL record is held by Hall of Famer Andy Eaton who hit .402 for Rio Grande in 1989!

If we're going to make the postseason we're going to need Dawson to hit .400, so hopefully there are two .400 hitters this year!

Monday, July 2nd, 2035: Gathee on a Rampage, Hits for Cycle
The big buzz in the baseball world is about Uksem Gathee's performance today at Ballpark of Napa Valley against Apex. Gathee had 4 hits en route to hitting for the cycle, leading the charge for the Napa Valley 6-4 triumph over the Assassins. A cycle requires all of the four types of hits possible -- single, double, triple and home run -- a batter has to have power, speed and a little luck to do it.

"It was one of those games you dream about," Gathee told the press. "I never expected to do something like this when I showed up at the park today. All you really want to do is hit it hard and put it into play. The hits will come." And the hits did come today. The 32-year-old left fielder rounded out his superb batting display with 4 hits in 8 at-bats, 4 RBI and 1 run scored.

U. Gathee doubled in the 2nd, flied out in the 5th, grounded out in the 8th, was hit by a pitch in the 9th, tripled in the 12th, grounded out in the 14th, flied out in the 17th, singled in the 19th and hit a three-run home run off T. Hayne in the 21st.

This year Gathee is hitting .309 with 17 home runs and 62 RBIs to his credit. He has gotten on base at a .393 clip and scored 60 runs.

Eddie sure called his #1 status, even if the rest of us didn't know what we were talking about.

Monday, July 2nd, 2035: Cain Fires Shutout in Chico Victory
It was not a good day at the plate for Harpooners hitters. Most of them came up empty against Doug Cain of the Chico Rebels. He held them to 1 hit and blanked Hartford 8-0. Cain also chalked up 11 strikeouts and 3 walks in the game at Rebels Ballpark.

Checking out his stats for the season, Cain has racked up 2 wins and 7 losses in 17 starts, 6.40 ERA and struck out 98 batters in 83 innings.

heck, this year in the RL a 6.40 ERA might be good enough for the Prado award!

One of only a handful of players in FOOL history to ever hit for 30+ games in a row!

Wednesday, July 25th, 2035: Winemakers Stop Edwards at 31
Colm Edwards, catcher for the Boston Settlers, gave it a good try, but his day in history finally came to an end, when he went hitless in 3 tries against the Napa Valley Winemakers. Not only had they stopped his 31-game hitting streak, they had beaten Boston 7-4, too.

Speaking with the media after the game, Edwards said, "Now that the streak has ended, I admit I will breathe a bit easier the next time I step up to bat. It was tough because I put a little pressure on myself. Now that it's over, I will definitely be a little bit looser at the plate."

This year Edwards is batting .320 with 117 hits, 3 home runs, 55 RBIs, 26 walks, .387 OBP and has scored 41 runs.

Wednesday, August 1st, 2035: Colorado Starter July's Best Pitcher
When Naofumi Ueda takes the hill, he's a good bet to nail down the victory for the Colorado Rancheros. At least that's the way it was in May.

He excelled with a 5-0 mark and 2.42 ERA in 6 starts. In 44.2 innings, he fanned 32 and walked 17.
That's why he was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the Republic League.

So far in 2035 Ueda has compiled a 16-4 record with a 3.13 ERA.

I'm not so sure I can tolerate the new kid coming in here with that kind of swagger.

(I'm also not so sure I can do anything about it.)

Wednesday, August 1st, 2035: Dawson Garners RL Batter of the Month Award
Chico first baseman Frank Dawson was certainly bad news for pitchers in the month of July. He wore them out going 51 for 126 and was rewarded with the Republic League Batter of the Month award.

He hit .405 with 15 home runs, 44 RBIs and scored 32 runs.

Presently Dawson is batting .393 and has collected 35 home runs, 118 RBIs, .423 OBP and scored 101 runs.

Wednesday, August 1st, 2035: Broomhead Gets CL Batter of the Month Trophy
Dan Broomhead battered Continental League pitchers all July and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 34-year-old Broomhead told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I may not take the field and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 29 games, Broomhead hit .330 with 7 home runs, 17 RBIs and scored 28 runs.

Presently Broomhead is batting .306 with 21 home runs and 75 RBIs. He has played in 111 games and scored 73 times.

Wednesday, August 1st, 2035: RL Names MacIan Best Rookie
Callum MacIan is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In July the New York hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .254 average with 32 hits, 1 home run and 6 RBIs.

MacIan is hitting at a .250 mark this season. His stats show 6 home runs, 43 RBIs and 60 runs scored. He has played 111 games for the Heroes.

Wednesday, August 1st, 2035: Best CL Rookie Named, Nod to Hernández
Jorge Hernández earned the Continental League Rookie of the Month honors for his fine stretch of play in July.

The 26-year-old Boston shortstop batted .320, smacked 1 home run and drove in 12 runs. He also tagged 33 hits, scored 16 runs and picked up 10 walks on his way to a .388 on-base percentage.

In his season totals Hernández has 7 home runs and a .297 batting average.

Looks like the CL is pretty much settled while the RL is a three team toss-up. Why does it seem like the RL is always a dog fight till the end?

Thursday, August 9th, 2035: Chico Dawson Gets the Cycle
Frank Dawson really put the hurt on the Hammersmith Hooligans today, leading the Rebels to a 11-10 win. He tagged them for 5 hits in 6 at-bats and hit for the cycle. Dawson also had 7 runs batted in and 1 run scored in the game at Rebels Ballpark. Hitting for the cycle is one of the most unusual feats in baseball at any level. The odds are near astronomical against a player hitting a single, a double, a triple and a home run in the same game.

The Chico first baseman said after the game, "I got some great pitches to hit... all 5 times the pitches didn't go where the pitcher wanted them to go. I hit their mistakes. Hitting for the cycle was great, but winning the game and helping my team is far more important. Individual accomplishments are fine, but I want to win, too."

F. Dawson grounded out in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, hit a two-run home run off S. Krantz in the 5th, hit an RBI double in the 6th, hit a two-run single in the 7th and hit an RBI triple in the 10th.

In his 2035 season totals, Dawson has 38 home runs, .405 BA, .433 OBP, 131 RBIs and 110 runs scored.

Friday, August 24th, 2035: 2000 Hits for O'Bryan
It was a banner day for Paul O'Bryan, who collected his 2000th hit in the Colorado 4-3 win over Hartford. O'Bryan went 1-4 in the game as both Rancheros and Harpooners fans cheered O'Bryan, when he reached base after his hit.

"It feels great to get #2000," O'Bryan said afterward, "especially since we won the game."

In 1866 career games, O'Bryan has put up a .298 average, collected 403 doubles, 18 triples, and 253 home runs, driven in 1105 runs and scored 1069 times.

Saturday, September 1st, 2035: RL Starter of the Month Goes to Lemieux
In August Hartford starter Renaud Lemieux confused hitters all month long. Last month's Republic League Pitcher of the Month took home the trophy as he collected a 4-0 record in 5 starts.

The 31-year-old Lemieux added 35 strikeouts in 41 innings and 10 walks to his season record and compiled a 1.76 ERA. Other clubs hit .228 against him.

This year Lemieux has compiled a 20-4 record with a 1.92 ERA.

I'm not sure that people need me to further explain how good Lemieux is, but he has the best ERA in all of FOOL at 1.92. Lemieux and Ueda are the only two pitchers in the Republic league with ERAs under 4 right now. Lemieux's ERA is over 2 points below the 3rd best pitcher in the RL right now.

Speaking of favorite players.. here is my current favorite player in FOOL by the way!

Saturday, September 1st, 2035: Long Captures CL Batter of Month Award
Prospective free agents love to have hot streaks and Dave Long is no exception. The Edmonton shortstop capped off a fine month by hauling in Batter of the Month honors in the Continental League.

In August Long hit .355 with 6 home runs, 31 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

On the season, Long is batting .282 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs. He has played in 139 games.

Saturday, September 1st, 2035: MacIan Snags Rookie of Month Trophy
Callum MacIan's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young New York center fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In August he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .344 with 11 doubles, no triples and 1 home run. MacIan also scored 18 times and drove in 18 runs.

MacIan is presently hitting at a .269 pace with 7 home runs and 61 RBIs. He has played in 139 games and scored 78 times.

Saturday, September 1st, 2035: Big Month for CL Rookie
Adrian Tomlinson earned August's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Apex right fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Tomlinson hit .338 with 1 home run, 6 RBIs and 9 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Tomlinson is hitting .292 in 2035 with 3 home runs, 46 RBIs and 46 runs scored. He has 116 hits in 397 at-bats and played in 133 games.

Way to go O'Bryan. I've had to start platooning him vs lefties, but he's still one of my favorite Rancheros right now.

Nice, we're playing better on the road than we have in the past couple of years. Hammersmith and New York are still right behind us though...gah.

Looks like I jinxed Ward as he has plummeted since My comment. Dawson is heating up at the right time though and could challenge .400

My personal opinion on his secret to playing above Pyth is that at the age of 41, Mike Hensley is the best closer in baseball still. In 2 seasons thus far he has only 10 blown saves (6 losses) in 120+ games.

Other than last year's FOOL Classic, he has been Mr.Automatic.
