Fonseca Guns Down Taiwan
Cuba hurler Jorge Fonseca was at his best as he whitewashed the Taiwan 22-0 today.

"He just kept the ball down, did a good job, made his pitches," said the Taiwan manager. "We didn't do a good job making adjustments, so we helped him out a little bit."

Fonseca fired a 6-hitter and totaled 5 strikeouts and 1 walk in the shutout performance.

Muñóz Slaps 6 Hits
Cuba left fielder José Muñóz really lit up the Taiwan with a 6-hit barrage today at Assasins Ballpark -- a performance that sparked the Cuba to a 22-0 triumph.

He shrugged off the performance after the game and said, "Sometimes the ball finds outfielders, today the ball found some holes."

J. Muñóz flied out in the 1st, hit an RBI double in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, doubled in the 5th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.

Taiwan Bats Silenced by Dávila
"He's mixing his pitches real well and keeping his composure on the mound," the Cuba manager said. "When Dávila does that, good things happen."

These comments came after Iván Dávila and the Cuba shut out the Taiwan 22-0.

He had 6 strikeouts, 1 walk and allowed 4 hits.

Borges Breezes to Shutout Victory
Felipe Borges was dynamite today and just blew Panama away in the 25-0 victory. The Cuba starter had everything working as he hurled a 3-hit shutout over the Panama, recording 8 strikeouts and no walks.

"He was pure nasty out there today. I don't think any team in the league would've had a chance against what he was bringing," said the Panama skipper during his postgame press conference.

Great Day for Costello -- 5 Hits
Cristóbal Costello exploded for a barrage of base hits today at Charm Ballpark. The Mexico right fielder had a field day in the 26-0 triumph over the Taiwan, finishing with a 5-6 day and a spot in the league record book.

"My hitting philosophy is pretty simple," he said. "I focus on just seeing the ball and I try to get a good pitch."

Well, Costello must have focused at least 5 times and apparently got some good pitches, too. It was one of his best days ever with the bat.

C. Costello hit an RBI single in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, grounded out in the 7th and hit a GRAND SLAM off Y. Ts'ong in the 8th.

This year Costello is batting .435 with 10 hits, 1 home run, 9 RBIs, no walks, .435 OBP and has scored 7 runs.

Even playing bare minimum teams like Panama and Taiwan, I get the sense Cuba is pretty dern good this year.

PIP Awards Player of the Week Trophy
There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Martín Valenzuela, the Cuba center fielder, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the Play-in POOL Player of the Week honors.

Valenzuela piled up 12 hits in 24 at-bats, 3 home runs and 16 RBIs while hitting .500.

Fonseca Shackles Taiwan
The Taiwan can take comfort in knowing that they will not have to face Jorge Fonseca again for a while. The 26-year-old hurler pitched a 2-hit shutout to help the Cuba beat Taiwan 29-0. In the process, Fonseca struck out 13 and walked 1.

5-5 Day for Valenzuela
5 hits in a game doesn't happen every day. Cuba's Martín Valenzuela had a very special day against the Taiwan when everything came together for him and he did just that -- collected 5 hits in 5 at-bats -- and led the Cuba to a 29-0 win at Assasins Ballpark.

"I'm just out there to try and help the team win," Valenzuela said after the game, "I had some real good at-bats today. I made good, solid contact and luckily no one caught 'em."

M. Valenzuela hit a two-run double in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, walked in the 4th, singled in the 4th, walked in the 6th, singled in the 8th and doubled in the 9th.

In 11 games this season Valenzuela has batted at a .568 pace with 25 hits and 3 home runs.

Valenzuela 5-7 for Cuba
Martín Valenzuela was on fire today and sparked his club to a 31-1 victory over the Taiwan. The Cuba center fielder was a tough out and went 5 for 7 against Taiwan in a fine hitting display.

"I got my pitches and I connected. They all found the right holes on the diamond. Some days you hit shots and they're right at somebody... and some days they fall in."

M. Valenzuela flied out in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, flied out in the 4th, walked in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 7th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and doubled in the 9th.

For 2039 Valenzuela is hitting .588 with 3 home runs. His stats include 26 RBIs and 29 runs scored.

Side commentary.. One of the reasons I decided to expand the pool a little bit was that some of the game's best players are from countries that are otherwise thin in talent.

I figured Cuba and Mexico were heavy favorites to come out of the Play-in POOL, but I wondered if a 1-2 of Betancourt and Zuniga could make the difference for Panama, or if the good hitters in the middle of the Taiwan Lineup might make a difference.

Fa-tang Le ended up hitting only .216 and had 8 hits in the entire 12 games for Taiwan and was a large disappointment.

Zuniga was strong, had a 1.88 ERA for Panama but finished 0-2 as his offense scored 0 (yes 0) runs for him in his starts.

Betancourt was a slight disappointment as he went 0-3 with a 4.98 ERA against talent that would be overall slightly below most FOOL major league squads. This is even with a .283 BABIP which is significantly below what would normally be expected.

Anyways, was a fun experiment and part of the WBC is a chance for some players that normally are unknowns to be suddenly spotlighted on the world stage. For instance, the best hitter in all of the PIP round was Martin Valenzuela, a 27 year old outfielder for Apex that has thus far in his FOOL career been rather uninspiring.

Either way, on to the WBC excitement. WBC begins tomorrow as I have time

Valenzuela is usually a platoon player for me and should be again this year. I may have to rethink that after look at all the 5 hit games.
