No longer making music is included. More that would be classified as not what we knew as classic rock or 80s music.

Well, Soundgarden had a rather large album in 2012. Given the way album cycles are these days, that probably qualifies as "new music"

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Train, hit songs on multiple albums with different sounds for each.

67-90 was the best music. After 90 I was done buying cds and today I listen to the Boneyard, 70's, 60's, or Hair Nation on XM. So modern rock is out of my listening ears.

I'm up on things or down with things these days, but is War On Drugs considered modern rock? Cause I think they're the best band out there right now.

If i need to leave some of my favorite modern metal bands out (In Flames, Trivium, Killswitch Engage, Bullet for my Valentine) then I would chose Tool/A Perfect Circle or Audioslave.
If we go back in time, Metallica on the metal side or Nirvana in the rock one.

You're missing quite a bit of good stuff. Even if you limit it to only stuff that sounds exactly like any of the niches those years would cover. Sleaze rock (ala Hair Nation) is alive & still done quite well by a number of bands, and melodic rock/AOR (think 80s before hair) has a wealth of good stuff these days. Your call, but you're missing some darned good stuff.

N*E*R*D for me, by far. Nobody else has been able to do what they do with rock.

Primus probably is my most "revered" band that I think fits this even if they started a short time before the 90's.
Others I considered based on sheer volume of listens: Ghost Pantera Tool Black Angels Arctic Monkeys Deftones Placebo Alice In Chains QOTSA - Even though I think their new album is total shit from a production standpoint.

Why leave 'em out? Hell, that's at least the 2nd Trivium mention in the thread so far

Just realized this time frame also includes The Verve. Their three album run from 1993-97 was outstanding. If their comeback record in 2008 had been better I'd be more willing to put them up with the best, but even so they deserve a mention.

I'd have to nominate Breaking Benjamin, mainly because they are a personal fave.
The Killers, Imagine Dragons, 30 Seconds to Mars, and Red honorable mentions. Any band that started in the grunge era or earlier is excluded for me, as that's not really "modern" anymore.

Probably because metal may or may not be considered rock, I imagine.

Compared to the alterna-pop that's populated this thread, yeah, I think he's safe.

One saving grace for this discussion however: nobody has suggested Babymetal as a candidate.

Thanks for everybody for making me spend a couple hours looking up a few of these bands and listen to songs on the web Am super bad at narrowing down, so i'm not really gonna take a stab here. Since nobody seems to have mentioned them yet i'll throw in Linkin Park, not really because i am a Fan but because they sold crazy amounts of albums during the 00s. In the same vein: Does Coldplay count ? Muse is a favourite of mine, RHCP, Foo Fighters and Green Day all probably hit that balance between successful and at least partially pretty well received critically. Personally i really enjoy a good Foo Fighters loop running, also saw them live twice and was impressed.

Yes, and I like Coldplay quite a bit. But not enough to consider them among the "best". But I think they get a bad rap - I never considered them overly derivative of Radiohead as so many critics have said, and as I've gotten older I've grown out of downplaying bands for writing catchy songs. I think they're a good band with a strong catalog.
