All Around Sports Team Draft (Picks Thread)
We have 10 participants, so time to get started. Please pick your team names if you have not done so yet.
Here is the draft order.... 1. Subby - Overwrought Message Board Enthusiasts 2. ColtCrazy - The Jacks 3. jbergey22 - Canton Raiders 4. hahnkim - Los Angeles Lettermen 5. digamma - West Hollywood Stars 6. Radii - Wake Forest Cougars 7. NorvTurnerOverdrive - Huevos Rancheros 8. Danny - Danny's Team 9. Karlifornia - New Orleans Oilbirds 10. Wade Moore - Williamsburg Superstars We'll use the snake draft format as always. Rule resposted for reference... 1. You will draft a team of 13 athletes and 1 coach. 2. Each athlete will be placed into a lineup for Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Soccer. 3. You are limited to 3 players who play (or did play) competitively at the college or pro level in football, baseball, or soccer, and 2 players in basketball. The other 2 athletes must come from some other sport. (If your athlete was a two sport star, they will only count against your total for the sport you pick, but this cannot be one of your "other sport" picks). 4. Since basketball has a small roster, every player you draft will be playing a minimum of 5 minutes in each game. 5. Your football players will be playing both ways. You will include all 22 standard positions, a Kicker/Punter, and a Kick/Punt returner. 6. For baseball, you will draft 8 position players, 4 Starting Pitchers, and a Closer. 7. For soccer, you will have two reserve players that do not need a designated position. Reserve players also bound to the 5 minute rule. 10. You cannot draft Jesus. 11. The following is required when making your pick: Round and Pick number, Team Name, Athlete Name, Sport 12. You should draft assuming the athletes are playing at their prime. You can draft no more than 7 athletes who are retired. 13. At the end, the board will vote to determine the winners.

Please send me a list of picks if you're not going to be around for a while.
I'll set an official start time for noon today. It's a good idea to PM the person picking after you to let them know theyre up.

With the Number One pick in the All Around Sports Team Draft (AASTD, pronounced ASS TED), the Overwrought Message Board Enthusiasts select:
1.1 Bo Jackson, O.M.B.E., Baseball I'll never forget the home run he hit in the all star game or the time he ran over Brian Bosworth. To guys my age, Bo Jackson is the quintessential multi-sport athlete.

dola, at the same time, I'll never forget when Dick Schapp said on sports reporters, when discussing the greatest athletes of the 20th century, that Bo Jackson was the greatest athlete he ever saw. Bo was my favorite athlete and I still rock out my Bo Royals jersey from time to time.

FYI - major work issues that I didn't anticipate. I should still be able to participate, or at least send a list, but if I can't be found for more than an hour two during the day today, you can skip me.

Just get lists in when you can.

With the #2 pick in the AASTD, The Jacks, as in The Jacks of All Trades, select:
1.2 Jim Thorpe, The Jacks, Track and Field I had this pick in mind from the moment I signed up for the draft. Thorpe is one of the most versatile athletes of all time. |

Thorpe is also who I would've grabbed in the first. Not that Bo Jackson is a bad pick, but I think Thorpe might be the best possible pick in the draft.

I tend to agree, but I will admit Bo Jackson was rolling in my mind as well for #1 if only because I actually saw him play and knew how great an athlete he was. |

Oh please. Jim Thorpe has to be the most overrated athlete of the 20th century.

The first four guys that popped into my head for the draft are already off the board. Now if the fifth guy I thought of goes fifth, I will be pretty shocked because I don't think it's as "obvious" a pick.

He made the college hall of fame for lacrosse, does that not count? I don't see how Jim Thorpe can be other, but Jim Brown can't. Thorpe played pro football and baseball. But I will go by your ruling. Last edited by hahnkim : 05-09-2010 at 06:25 AM. |

I didn't notice that Thorpe was "other" as well. Yes, he will have to be changed also.
The intent of that rule was so people wouldn't be using creativity to subvert the limitations on pro players in each sport.

Seems a shame that Thorpe can't be counted as track and field considering he won medals in the Olympics, but that is fine. If I can count him in either football or baseball, I'll go with baseball.

The problem is Other can encompass anything and I envisioned a scenario where someone ended up with a team of 11 NFL players because they found some sport they competed at the college level. Now Thorpe and Brown would obviously not be stretches, but allowing them to count as Other would open the door to lots of nonsense.
Something I learned from the last draft I ran (Historical Nation) is that it's better to have hard set rules than ones where I'd have to make alot of judgment calls. That draft, while it went well overall, at times got out of hand as people tried to find the thinnest of reasons to have someone count for a country.

1.5 West Hollywood Stars select Dave Winfield, Basketball, Retired. Hall of Fame outfielder also drafted and good enough to play in the NBA and was drafted by the Vikings in the NFL, despite having never played football. Winfield played forward for the University of Minnesota, so we will use him as a basketball selection.

I guess I have a different take here... there's one athlete out there that automatically gives you the best team in one of the four sports we are putting together teams for. One of these four sports allows for individual domination to determine titles. Only one of these four sports has a single individual considered the greatest player in the sport's history without any real debate. And oh yea, he was also voted ESPN's #1 athlete of the 20th century.
1.6, Michael Jordan, Wake Forest Cougars, Basketball, retired Jordan is hyper-competitive, he'll find a way to compete in the other three sports, and I'm confidant that the voters will agree that as long as I put a decent set of athletes around Jordan, I've already put together the best basketball team. We can spend the rest of the draft trying to win the other three sports Last edited by Radii : 05-09-2010 at 10:21 PM. |

Oh yeah, if you could add the modern/retired designation to your picks, that would help for tracking purposes.

This reminds me. I'll probably use the same 5-3-1 voting method, but also ask people to pick the #1 team in each individual sport, so we'll have some honorable mention winners.

1.8 Danny's team - Jackie Robinson, Baseball
Robinson was great in football and track in college, but ultimately made his name in baseball as a Hall of Fame player and the one who broke the color barrier in MLB. At UCLA, he became the first athlete in UCLA history to letter in four different sports in one year. Until 1947 he was presumed to be the only person ever selected to play in the college All Star games in both basketball and football. I bet he would be solid in soccer as well. So we'll start the clock on Monday at 9AM.
I'm not too strict with it. Let's just say if you miss a full 24 hour period, then you get put on a one hour clock for the rest of the draft. I won't make a pick for you. You'll just get skipped. If you get a chance, please send in picks. That will help the draft move more smoothly. Also, please PM the person picking after you.

1.9 New Orleans Oilbirds- Michael Vick, football, modern
Vick is kind of a scumbag. We all know that. However, this draft isn't based on moral character. This is based on all-around athleticism. Michael Vick fits the mold. He is a world-class athlete. He can run faster than almost anyone. This would benefit him in every sport. He has a cannon for an arm. This, in addition to his speed, would make him a perfect centerfielder in baseball. Give him some soccer training, and I'm sure he could at least be a sub on the US team.

1.10 - Mohammed Ali, Other, Retired
Mohammed Ali is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He didn't play in one of the big sports, but he was just a pure athlete. He had size and speed (particularly quickness) that should translate well. 2.1 - Shaquille O'Neal, Basketball, Active Shaq is one of the more dominant basketball players to ever play the game. You have to think about Shaq at his prime, not Shaq now. He is a guy that has athleticism as well as size which should make him versatile in some of the harder to fill football positions.

2.3, Wilt Chamberlain, basketball, retired
Besides noticing that Chamberlain was strong, fast and agile from his basketball playing (and sex exploits), you could look to his track and field performances. As a prep, he set Pennsylvania state records in the shot put and the 110-meter hurdles, and his scholarship to Kansas was for both basketball and track. He earned the track portion by winning three straight Big Eight high jump titles. Additionally, after he retired from basketball, the Dipper transformed himself into a world-class volleyball player. For fun, he ran marathons. He also turned down offers to play pro football and box professionally. Besides being a dominant basketball player, He should be a 4 sport contributer. |

Wilt ran track? Bill Russell ran track. Wilt earned a track scholarship b/c of the high jump? Bill Russell was considered one of the top 10 high jumpers in the world while at San Francisco and turned down a spot on the Olympic track and field team to play basketball instead. Also, Bill Russell wins championships. To quell any possible talk of "wilt's basketball team could be better than Jordan's", I'll take Wilt's kryptonite:
2.5, Bill Russell, Wake Forest Cougars, Basketball, Retired |

2.6, Joe Mauer, West Hollywood Stars, Baseball, Active.
Several thoughts here make Mauer my pick. #1 QB in his high school class make him my QB while strengthening my baseball squad. Catcher is a somewhat rare and valuable commodity. His catcher's thighs and mentality put him as a back line defender for me in soccer. |

2.7, John Elway, Los Angeles Lettermen, Football, Retired
One of the greatest QBs to ever play the game, and a legitimate two sport star in college, he hit .349 in the Yankees organization, and pulled double duty as a pitcher and rightfielder at Stanford. He could've had a future in either sport, but chose football, and the rest is history. |

Considered Elway strongly at 2.1, but I didn't want to stack up on retired guys.
