Anyhows, re-reading through this thread was kind of weird due to all of the old fofc couples broken up....

Saldana and Lathum aren't together anymore right?

Well played!

Every time this thread gets bumped, I think of JimmyWint, but in my mind I conflate him with Jimmy Wynn, and I imagine that his wife stabbed him with a steak knife when she found the bank statement.

That spells closure for me.

Dude I work with just discovered a fraudulent charge made against his corporate card - $24. He phoned up the bank and the charge was made against a vendor who a google search revealed was a pseudonym for Ashley & Madison. This might have been suspicious if not for the fact that he is also very, very gay.

To top it off, the bank told him that they'd stopped a second charge that was attempted - for $11,000 - to a cupcake company based in the US, of all things.

So - it's apparently out there now. 9.7 gigabites of account details, log-ins, credit card numbers, profile descriptions. I'd be tempted to look through it for people I know, but, that would make feel dirty, and I'm not tech-savy enough to get maneuver the dark web.

That's a potential gold-mine for identity thieves and blackmailers

the numbers are staggering. according to this Data Viz: Ashley Madison Users by ZIP Code | InterWorks, Inc. 1 out of every 200 people in my zip code had accounts. there are probably 5+ JimmyWints on this board alone.

I read that "Obama" had something like 10 accounts.

The issue with these dumps is that apparently Ashley Madison didn't verify/authenticate emails at sign up.

Also, it's unclear to me whether email addresses are all actual accounts, or whether Ashley Madison simply owned some of the addresses for spam purposes.

I've never been to AshleyMadison, but I do get a fair number of emails from them on my old 15-year old personal email address that gets spammed to oblivion, so my address is probably in there somewhere.

Yeah, you can't trust the email addresses. Credit card records and associated street addresses are something else though.

I am pretty sure anyone who sees their spouse's email address on that list will definitely be trusting it.

It says something that I saw a report about a couple being murdered last night and my first thought was wondering if the motive was Ashley Madison related.

Almost None of the Women in the Ashley Madison Database Ever Used the Site

This is a fantastic read on the data of what was dumped.

From the article:
Quote:
About two-thirds of the men, or 20.2 million of them, had checked the messages in their accounts at least once. But only 1,492 women had ever checked their messages. It was a serious anomaly.

The writer concludes:

Quote:
They were not created by women wanting to hook up with married men. They were static profiles full of dead data, whose sole purpose was to make men think that millions of women were active on Ashley Madison.

Quote:
When you look at the evidence, it’s hard to deny that the overwhelming majority of men using Ashley Madison weren’t having affairs. They were paying for a fantasy.

I agree. It's an excellent analysis of the data.

There's no way Ashley Madison can survive this, right? Between the data breach and this kind of information, are people still going to pay for subscriptions to this site?

I'm not sure they will survive the lawsuits pertaining to the deleted data. It's clear that they violated their own terms, after they collected money to delete data.

I think there will always be something that will fill the void of what men seek.

I don't buy this guys story for a second and if he did go to all the trouble to change his account around and go on the offensive showing his wife it wasn't him... I'm a bit speechless. That's kinda diabolical. I would imagine when you sign up for Ashley Madison, they're sending you emails to get you back on the site. This guy would have been getting AM emails all along.

I don't know how the original user would have posted account details and such without first having a email confirmation. It really feels like he's trying to get out in front of the story. And his wife is a dope. Not Anna Duggar level, but still a dope.

Can confirm that its pretty easy if you have an e-mail address that gets mistakenly used by many other people (for example a common first initial + last name) to see an Ashley Madison account created for your e-mail in like 2010, laugh about that, send it to spam and forget about it until Ashley Madison gets hacked and then remember "oh, shit, my e-mail got used for that way back when didn't it?"

But, I would say that if I was married or in a relationship when that happened to me I would not have just laughed it off. Would have done something about that the second I saw the registration e-mail.

I actually know that dude, and I believe him. Right now, I have over 200 messages in my hotmail junk folder that I will not go through. Also, I usually use that email to sign up for things, so it's not out of the realm that I will get 40-50 regular messages per day (maybe 1 from my dad who forgets I use gmail) and I just highlight all and delete after a quick scan. Since emails have been sold and things like that, I also will see pr0n type emails even though I've never had an account at those places (meet hot girls in your area, make your peni bigger, etc). So if somebody like Dutch with a similar name used my email, it would be possible I had absolutely no idea.

Yeah I get signed up for things by other people a lot with my email address. Mostly legit stuff like Hotel loyalty programs or even someone's Scarborough Hockey Association registration, but a couple times it's been pr0n or whatever. It's really annoying, but after trying unsuccessfully to unsubscribe to some of the things I've just given up. I'll mark the first couple emails as spam (if they don't just start that way) and then Gmail takes care of the rest. I almost never review my spam folder, maybe like once every 6 months I'll scan it for a lark.

I have a dedicated spam email account. Whenever I have to sign up for anything, I use that account. Then I have any mail not sent from someone in my address book delivered to the junk mail. Every now and then, I look through it and delete the crap.

Meanwhile, my real account remains pristine.

I kind of wish I had done that, because I've had the same email for everything, for like 16 years, and it's as dirty a sex show in the red light. It would be such a pain to move it now.

How Ashley Madison Hid Its Fembot Con From Users and Investigators

Some more good data analysis from the data leak.

Quote:
To the Ashley Madison “guest,” or non-paying member, it would appear that he was being personally contacted by eager women. But if he wanted to read or respond to them, he would have to shell out for a package of Ashley Madison credits, which range in price from $60 to $290. Each subsequent message and chat cost the man credits. As documents from company e-mails now reveal, 80 percent of first purchases on Ashley Madison were a result of a man trying to contact a bot, or reading a message from one.

But survive they have, apparently.

Now with 60 million users, a figure that's apparently (allegedly) been verified by an Ernst & Young audit (the same firm that verified the end of the bot program after its discovery)

They paid out $11.2 million to settle the class-action suit filed after the 2015 scandal, and the founding CEO resigned.
