Sorry about that, I first thought about the MLB thread and then figured the Mets thread needed a bumping. |

There's one of those signs a block from my apartment, walk past it twice a day minimum. Not to mention seeing it 20 or so more times on my commute. It's definitely the most popular of their signs.

It would be more accurate to say: Yankees/Rangers/Knicks/Liberty/S.I. Yankees/Brooklyn Cyclones. And possibly St. John's men's basketball.

Updated: May 23, 2011, 8:37 AM ET Fred Wilpon takes shots at Mets players By Adam Rubin ESPNNewYork.com Archive New York Mets principal owner Fred Wilpon takes pointed shots at some of his marquee players in an extensive article in The New Yorker mostly designed to highlight his rags-to-riches tale. The embattled owner, who became ensnared in Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme and is now being sued for more than $1 billion by the trustee trying to recover funds for Madoff victims, tells the magazine: Shortstop Jose Reyes will not be getting a super-huge contract from the Mets. "He thinks he's going to get Carl Crawford money," Wilpon said, referring to Crawford's seven-year, $142 million contract with the Boston Red Sox. "He's had everything wrong with him. He won't get it." On right fielder Carlos Beltran, Wilpon refers to Beltran's huge postseason with the Houston Astros in 2004 and says: "We had some schmuck in New York who paid him based on that one series. He's sixty-five to seventy percent of what he was." About David Wright: "Really good kid. A very good player. Not a superstar." On whether the franchise might be snakebit, Wilpon makes another pointed Beltran reference. Author Jeffrey Toobin writes: "At one point, I mentioned to Wilpon the theory that the Mets might be cursed. He gave a sort of half laugh, and said, 'You mean' -- and then pantomimed a checked swing of the bat. Any Mets fan (I am one) would understand the reference. The Mets took the 2006 National League Championship Series to a seventh game against the Cardinals." Wilpon apparently does like first baseman Ike Davis. "Good hitter," Wilpon says. "[Word for poop] team. Good hitter. ...We're snakebitten, baby." Madoff then offers Wilpon endorsements in the article, trying to absolve the Mets ownership family of knowledge of the Ponzi scheme. The disgraced Madoff wrote Toobin in an email: "Fred was not [at] all stock market savvy and [brother-in-law] Saul [Katz] was not really either. They were strictly Real Estate people. Although I explained the Strategy to them they were not sophisticated enough to evaluate it properly, nor were most of my other individual clients. They were not in a position to perform the necessary due diligence and did not have access to necessary financial info or records." In a separate phone interview with Toobin, Madoff says: "He must feel that I betrayed him, as do most of my friends who were involved. Hopefully, they will understand the pressures I was under. I made money for them legitimately to start, but then I got trapped and was not able to work my way out of it. It just became impossible for me to extricate myself, or even try and extricate myself." The Reyes and Wright comments are right on. The Beltran quote was taken out of context from the article, where he says he's 65% of what he was because of injuries...not from his performance in that series.

yup.
I do agree on a lot of it though. He didn't say anything most Mets fans don't already know/ think. And as much as I love Wright and want him to be considered a superstar he just isn't. I do think if he played in a different ballpark he would put up better numbers. |

Heck, he might not even get Bobby Bonilla money. This isn't new, but it's been in the news again lately and I didn't realize the Madoff connection. The Mets owed Bonilla $5.9 million for the 2000 season, so, it made perfect sense to get him to defer that, invest the money with Madoff for an absolutely, positively, guaranteed 10-12% annual return, and they'd have PLENTY left over to instead pay Bonilla $29.8 million million between now and about 2036. Wilpon says Mets will lose up to $70 million - CBSSports.com Last edited by molson : 05-24-2011 at 11:48 PM. |

Can't believe this thread hasn't been bumped in 4 years.
I caught some of the ESPN Dark Knight special about Matt HArvey last night. I found it interesting and his attitude refreshing if not a bit brash. That being said I have zero doubt he bolts the Mets for the Yankees as soon as he possibly can. He doesn't seem to be too enamored with Mets ownership. |

Maybe, but there's an opportunity for him to be in the discussion as the greatest Met ever. Since Tom Seaver is our greatest Met and he was a pitcher, he has an opportunity to achieve a lot more for a franchise than he could with the Yankees. Would you rather be the best pitcher for a Franchise or another Mike Mussina for the Yankees? $$ will be there regardless.
Obv. This is all a bit premature but worth saying. Last edited by Ramzavail : 05-07-2015 at 12:54 PM. |

I think a guy who grew up a Yankee fan would rather spend 7 years on the hill as the Yankees ace then be the greatest Met of all time.
I hope I'm wrong |

What will probably help is that by the time it's an option for him, he might be settled down (or close to it) so hopefully whatever issues he has with ownership will have been quieted down a bit. Although I could see him easily being a Jeter type and just banging every model possible until he retires.
Whatever...I wouldn't even blame him. Ownership is a mess and they give him shit because he actually has a personality, and he doesn't care what they think of him. As long as whatever he does isn't affecting his game, and he's staying out of any potential legal trouble...and he's miles from any of that it seems, leave him the fuck alone and go fix what actually needs fixing. |

Yeah, screw Cubs fans - we are by far more pessimistic than them!

Did you watch the ESPN piece or know Harveys history at all? It is pretty reasonable to think he will bolt, I don't think that is pessemistic, just reality. I think by and large us Mets fans have been pretty positive about this season. |

To be fair, most pessimists justify their pessimism by saying "it's just reality" .

Or, you know, it's just being a Mets fan - pessimistic.
Very few fanbases are like, yah, our ace is awesome! but he'll be gone soon because he really still likes another team better . That's even too pessimistic for me!

I am more or less apathetic about the Mets as an organization. I neither like nor dislike them, and they don't play in the league of the team I follow.
All that said, as a guy who stowed away Syndegaard in one of my fantasy leagues, I am super excited to see how he does tomorrow.

This needed a bump over the weekend.
What a difference a couple months make. Very excited for the postseason and hope we can hold off the Dodgers for home field in the NLDS. |

So even after we've clinched, is it still normal to feel worried...
