I dont watch Sesame Street anymore because my daughters are older, but my 9 yr old told me they changed the cookie monster to the veggie monster and Oscar the grouch now lives in a recycling bin.

She's either wrong or pulling your leg. Oscar still lives in a trash can and Cookie is still...well...Cookie. In fact, Cookie was even on the Colbert Report last year discussing this very issue:

There was a moment when they tried to go hip-hop with sesame street but it didn't go over too well. Not sure about the veggie thing though.

Funny...we had a Sesame Street "CD Player" toy (put the plastic disc in, push different buttons for different sounds) that played short little disco/country/rock/hip hop tunes. Characters would introduce the genre (Elmo would proclaim "Disco!")...Cookie was the intro for Hip Hop.
