I do tell the dentist, hygienist that if I look nervous or my forehead starts to sweat, its me and not them. I'll let them know if I am in pain with my hands.

It'd just be Atlanta accomplishments, I believe. He wants to make it JUST about "on the field" but no one does a list like that is just on the field (how do you compare people from different sports for one). And even regarding on the field performance, Aaron had 10 less years, but his years were better on average (and he should have won the 1969 MVP).

I think that the reason for Aaron only have 9 years in Atlanta makes a big difference - the Braves moved here and Aaron laid the foundation for that club. That's why the street in front of Turner was named for him. And the 715 HR is the most famous Atlanta sports moment in history. That sort of stuff makes one an icon. Chipper had an amazing career, won an MVP (and interestingly, maybe shouldn't have won it) and a Championship (though he had better teams than Hank did).

I think the main thing is that this guy grew up in the 90s, so Chipper was one of his heroes, but he doesn't realize the extent of what Hank did for the Braves and the city. He was really the first Atlanta nation-wide star.

I give that title to Alabama and Auburn after spending 4 years in AL. There are a lot of bat shit crazy people on both sides of that rivalry.

That raises an interesting question kinda tho: is it really? In the moment it occurred, yes, absolutely But now? I'd say that both Sid Slid and even The Catch are both more recognizable for the existing population. And honestly more exciting in context of their moment too.

715 was a {insert a superlative here, can't really pick one big enough} individual achievement but there was little sense of community pride in it compared to at least The Slide. I doubt you'd find a double digit percentage of people who'd trade it for having even a decent team in the decade. It was a big deal in the market in part because there really weren't any other big deals to compare it against. And a lot of the people who saw Aaron hit 715 live are, well, dead. Fame is, as they say, fleeting.

And I have no clue what The Catch is (the first things that come into mind are Willie Mays and Dwight Clark and that isn't from here)

Doesn't Aaron get hurt by the fact his best years were in Milwaukee? I mean he had about 6-7 great years in Atlanta, but that usually doesn't make you a legend.

Greg Maddux is kind of that way in Chicago. He was great for the Cubs but the team was trash and the bulk of his best years were in Atlanta. I think people would say Fergie Jenkins is more of an icon in the city. Even Jon Lester after the World Series.

A-Rod was considerably better with the Yankees than Jeter ever was. Guarantee most people will say Jeter is a bigger icon.

Hank Aaron gets to be an icon in two cities.

Since this is the random thoughts thread, the Hank Aaron mention made me look at Eddie Matthews and Warren Spahn. Aaron/Matthews/Spahn is pretty much the Milwaukee trifecta for the older generation. Spahn played for the Boston Braves and Milwaukee Braves, but never in Atlanta. Aaron played for the Milwaukee and Atlanta iterations of the Braves and also played for the Brewers to end his career.

Eddie Matthews is an interesting one, as he played for the Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta Braves. Albeit, just one year in Boston and Atlanta respectively.

Hank Aaron WAR in Milwaukee - 89
Hank Aaron WAR in Atlanta - 54

You could damn near argue that Aaron had Hall of Fame worthy careers separately in both cities.

Yeah. No arguments. I may favor a correctly made personal pan with pepperoni but pizza hut quality is all over the place. One near me is excellent but others suck.

Ah, but it wasn't a question directed to just Braves fans. Also look at the population of metro Atlanta from 1996 (after both the Slide and the Catch) to now. The area has grown 4-5 fold. A lot of those people may have become Braves fans, but I bet they know Aaron's 715th more than the Catch. The Slide may be even. But then you widen that out to Falcons/Hawks fans who are casual Braves fans, and you'd get even more people who think of Aaron first.

And remember both the Slide and Catch happened over 25 years ago. The young folks may have even different iconic remembrances.

Overexaggeration, but as one of those transplants, I think of 715 as the iconic Atlanta moment. I know of the Slide, of course, but it doesn't particular compare to me. I think a lot of Atlanta United fans, who are casual Braves fans at best, see it similarly (we all know Hank Aaron after all... Sid Bream is harder for most non-baseball fans to place). Maybe same with Falcons fans who are casual Braves fans as well.

Thanks for the heads up! Dune is one of my favorite books (but not #2 or #3, way too weird).

The David Lynch movie version really sucked but thought the Sci-Fy (?) series was pretty decent.

TBH, I'm resigned to be disappointed. I don't think you can put Dune into a 2 or 2.5 hour movie. I would much prefer a Netflix season.

Spahn played for the Boston Braves and Milwaukee Braves, but never in Atlanta. Aaron played for the Milwaukee and Atlanta iterations of the Braves and also played for the Brewers to end his career. Eddie Matthews is an interesting one, as he played for the Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta Braves. Albeit, just one year in Boston and Atlanta respectively. Hank Aaron WAR in Milwaukee - 89 Hank Aaron WAR in Atlanta - 54 You could damn near argue that Aaron had Hall of Fame worthy careers separately in both cities.

I know of the Slide, of course, but it doesn't particular compare to me. I think a lot of Atlanta United fans, who are casual Braves fans at best, see it similarly (we all know Hank Aaron after all... Sid Bream is harder for most non-baseball fans to place).
