2/26/11 - Dawlish - Home

Weekly Notes
Odd Down is on a 5 game unbeaten streak. They have also set a club record for games without allowing a goal and that is at 6.

Buxton have offered Gibb while Frickley, Kiddsgrove and Sutton Coldfield have offered Woods. Both were countered with Key Player contracts and have agreed to stay.

Match Notes
This is a major key match for both clubs. If Dawlish wins this will set them at 57 points and a 4 point lead over the other teams. If Odd Down wins it puts them at 56 points and the lead with them playing a hold on game be it by winning or drawing, they could hold the League.

This is the 3rd meeting between the teams and so far Dawlish has the uppwer hand with a win and a draw.

Dawlish runs the 4-4-2 and this match is pegged to be a draw.

Odd Down Lineup

Match Time

1' Long pass from Hogarth to Gibb sees him set up midway in the box and send his shot wide.

7' Gary Squires of Dawlish jumps into the back of Metcalfes legs. He didn't even go for the ball. He was issued an immediate red card. Dawlish is now playing a man down.

11' Boakye forced the pass into the box and there was a scramble for the ball. Gibb and Banton both went for it, Gibb ended up getting in the way of a defender as Banton sent the ball into net. GOAL! Wait! The goal was waved off. Gibb was whistled for holding onto the defenders shirt.

19' A pass from Murray into Woods has his header going over the goal.

40' Marshall for Dawlish sends a rocket just past the goal.

Half: There are no changes and the pep talk was about how they have every opportunity to win this game.

Match Analysis
I am not going to say it was a good match, but it wasn't ugly either. The foul that gave Dawlish the red card was pretty brutal and Metcalfe took a big knock from it and played that way the bulk of the match.

Dawlish did a great job of keeping the attack out of the box and forcing the long shots.

All of the Downers stepped up to the occasion and managed to keep Dawlish at bay.

Man of the Match
Paul Porter (7.5)

March News and Notes

The Downers stepped up play and ended February at the top of the ladder. It was shrewd defensive play and some choice shots that have placed them there. The goal spurts they had earlier has slowed down and they are only 6 goals ahead on GD.

3/5/11 - Radstock - Away

Weekly Notes
Odd Down is coming in on a 4 win streak / 6 game unbeaten streak. They have also had 7 games without allowing a goal.

Coach Sutton is trying to bring in some solid backup and starting talent to help bolster the team but it isn't happening and he is going to ride with the players he has.

Match Notes
The last match between these two teams was just filthy. Odd Down won 9-0 at home against Radstock. The Downer look to increase their goal differential with this match.

Radstock runs a 4-4-1-1 attacking formation and as you could probably guess they are completely picked to be underdogs for this match.

Ben Woods is set to make his 25th league appearance and 25th Odd Down appearance this match.

Odd Down Lineup

GK Hegarty
D Wright / Porter / Hogarth / Metcalfe
DM Elliott
M Murray / Boakye
AM Morris / Woods
ST Gibb

Subs: Rusling / Banton / Cowan / Baldwin / Tooth

Match Time

1' Woods with a corner had his pass blocked but Elliott was there to clean it up and send the ball into the back of the net. GOAL! Odd Down is up 1 - 0.

3' Gibb is forced to shoot earlier than he wanted to and the ball sails wide.

7' Aspin passes it to Lamb who is streaking in from the right and his shot goes in! GOAL! The game is now even 1-1

36' Lamb flicks up to Lewis and his header goes over the goal.

38' Banton comes in for Gibb, Woods moves up to striker and Banton is an AMF.

42' Woods shot from the free kick sails above the goal.

Half: It's an encouraging speech for the bulk of the crew, Wright is playing horriblye and is told as much.

49' Metcalf with a long pass to Woods who had to run to get to it. He takes two steps with the ball and shoots, it strikes home. GOAL! Odd Down is now up 2-1!

51' Lewis rockets a centering pass to Aspin who volleys the shot home. GOAL! The score is all even at 2-2

56' Murray sent a crossing shot in, hoping he could catch the keeper off guard. The keeper barely turned the shot. Corner Kick

67' Banton is booked with a yellow card due to a hard charge.

69' Morris moves back to defense, Baldwin is subbed for Banton and moves up to striker as the team shifts to the 4-1-2-1-2.

70' Corner kick from Velox to Aspin. Aspin volleys it in. GOAL! Radstock steps up and takes the lead 3-2.

72' Elliott is booked to yellow for tripping.

77' Lamb sends a pass into Lewis he shoots, Murray goes to clear and his clearing rebounds off of Lewis and into the net...it counts as an own goal. Radstock is now up 4-2

Match Analysis
What a disappointing game. They countered every score and then stepped up and took it to the Downers. It was like the Odd Down players were over confident heading into the match. They have to recover because now, they are in a fight for the Table.

Mark Aspin tore the Downer up after being told he wasn't the only focus. Guess he wanted to show Joel Sutton.

3/12/11 - Larkhall -

Weekly Notes
Scott Metcalfe was injured at the end of the last match versus Radstock and broke his collarbone. He will be out for at least 2 months.

Joel Sutton was fined by the FA for his comments on the refereeing of the Radstock game. The board was pissed it happened.

Dawlish did pass Odd Down and are back in 1st by 1 point.

Match Notes
This is the second match between these two teams. The first saw Odd Down take the 3 points with a 2-0 win at Larkhall. This match is home for the Downers and they should be able to take it.

Larkhall plays with a unique 4-3-2-1 formation and it is heavily focused on an attack. They are picked to struggle and lose to the Downers.

Odd Down Lineup

GK Rusling
D Morris / Porter / Hogarth / Tooth

Subs: Hegarty / Hobbs / Partridge / Banton / Wright

Match Time

9' Morris passes to Boakye who is moving quickly from the top left corner of the box. He shoots and sails it high.

Half: Just a pep talk letting them know they can win this match.

64' Boakye is subbed by Hobbs while Baldwin is subbed by Banton who goes to the AM while Woods steps up to striker.

78' Danny Partridge subs in for Tooth.

79' Dexter receives his second yellow for the match and is sent off. Larkhall is now down a man.

Match Analysis
What an ugly boring game that ended in one of the worst possible way for Odd Down. If Dawlish wins they are now four points ahead of the Downers and it will be a big hill to climb with 8 to go.

They picked up 3 yellows and a red, plus two injuries and were down 2 men for 10 minutes and the Downers were still unable to take advantage.

3/19/11 - Barnstaple - Away

Weekly Notes
The draw from last week did not help the situation, Dawlish picked up points as did Bristol MF and the Downers are now 3rd...3 pts behind Dawlish and 2 points behind Bristol. This will come to these last 9 games to see who promotes.

Woods and Gibb have both decided they wanted to stay and see this team through.

Match Notes
They have played one match against each other and Barnstaple brought home the points from that match.

Barnstaple runs a 4-4-2 and they are the favorites because this match is at home.

Odd Down Lineup
GK Rusling
D Morris / Porter / Hogarth / Tooth
DM Elliott
M Boakye / Murray
AM Woods
ST Baldwin / Gibb

Subs: Hegarty / Hobbs / Gray / Banton / Wright

Match Time

6' A long pass from the Barnstaple goalie sends Charran alone against Rusling. The angle Rusling took forced Charran's shot wide.

11' Gibb's shot from the free kick goes wide

12' Goal kick goes to Hogarth who heads it to Gibb. Gibb leads Baldwin who shoots and has his shot blocked and cleared.

16' Charran has his shot go wide.

35' Murray shoots from about 30m out and a miraculous save stops the shot.

Half: There were 3 yellow cards issued in the 1st half, all three to Odd Down players. Morris, Elliott and Gibb. Gray comes in for Elliott.

59' Bray shoots and his shot misses to the right.

71' Banton goes in for Gibb and is placed at AM while Woods moves to ST. Keith Wright fills in for Morris.

87' Tooth to Banton to Boakye and his shot goes wide.

88' Woods receives the pass and takes the ball to the lower left side of the box and centers it. Barnstaple's keeper misplays the pass and Murray gets the ball and chips it into the goal. GOAL! Odd Down is up 1-0!

90' A long pass to Charran has him one on one with Rusling and Rusling swoops in and steals the ball.

Match Analysis
It was a back and forth game where the Odd Down defense locked down on Barnstaple and all shots were forced from the outside of the box which didn't allow anything to go to target. There appeared to be a bit of home cooking with 5 yellows being dished to Odd down and nothing being handed to Barnstaple.

3/22/11 - Wellington - Les Phillips Cup (Home)

Weekly Notes
What a rough week. The Downers lose ST James Gibb to Chorley as he signs a $90/wk contract with them. With this issue, Supat Rungratsamee is called back up from the reserves.

Match Notes

With the decision that promotion is critical compared to the cup win, some of the main starters will get rest for the upcoming league match.

This will be the 3rd match this season between the teams and it is an even 1-1-0 split with them.

Wellington runs a 4-4-1-1 attacking formation and right now the game is anybodys according to the paper but the bookies have the Downers as favorites.

Odd Down Lineup

GK Rusling
D Wright / Whelan / Porter / Partridge
DM Gray
M Hobbs / Banton
AM Cowan
ST Danvers / Wakeman

Subs: Hegarty / Rungratsamee / Jones / Hogarth / Thomas

Match Time

13' Wakeman moves around his defender and fires a solid shot and it is blocked by the keeper and cleared.

30' Craig Oliver of Wellington is hit with a red card for a dangerous tackle from behind. Wellington is now playing a man down.

33' Banton is injured and has to come off. He is replaced by Tom Jones.

Half: Players are told that we need one goal to win this the way the match is going.

66' A corner kick from Hobbs is headed by Porter, it is deflected out to Wright who volleys it off the wood work and into the net. GOAL! Odd Down is up 1-0!

77' Gary Gray comes off for Jeff Thomas who moves up into the MF and Rungratsamee comes in for Wakeman.

89' Danvers makes a great pass to Rungratsamee who volleys...the shot is blocked but Rungratsamee corals the ball and fires another shot to goal and it goes in! GOAL! Odd Down is now up 2-0!

Without the bulk of the starters in, the Downers took great care of Wellington basically shutting them completely down. The loss of a player to a red card early hurt Wellington.

This win does put Odd Down into the Les Phillips Cup final.

Weekly Notes

Lucas Banton's injury is strained knee ligaments and he is out for at least 2 months.

Woods received another flurry of offers and the Downers offered with a key player tag.

One positive is Odd Down is a game behind all the teams up top..so really it could be beneficial right now as the games start to flesh out that they could take the top and continue on.

Match Notes
This is the 2nd match between these two teams. Odd Down is up on Willand as they won the last match 2-1.

Willand runs a 4-1-4-1 defensive formation. Although Odd Down has had a rough go at home of late, they are still picked to win the match.

GK Tom Rusling has not conceded a goal in 846 consecutive minutes.

Match Analysis
Very sloppy game for the Downers as they picked up 5 more fouls than Willand. It was a weird game as the shots just weren't there and were going wide. Rungratsamee has talent, but he just isn't able to convert when it matters.
Getting 1 point instead of 3 hurts here. But 1 pt is better than nothing and still keeps the Downers in the running.

Match Analysis
It was a game of missed chances that should have been in Odd Down's favor. They had the shots on and just missed or the Bitton goalie was playing out of his mind.

The 1 point helps, but the Downers need 3 pts.

Hegarty played out of his mind this game. He turned several shots that were one on one chances and was diving all over to get to the balls. The goal that snuck in was because he ended up pulled out of position and the rebound is what got the good spot.

Woods had an abysmal game and will be talked to in regards to that. He is a key player and isn't allowed bad games.

04/16/11 - Welton Rovers - Home

Weekly Notes

2 new signings have been announced by Odd Down. Both are from D.R. Congo. 18 yr old striker Christian Bulembi and 20 year old striker Aristote Guerin-Lokoga. 1 is a new replacement for Gibb and the other is a backup plan if Woods decides to get paid.

Match Notes

This is the third match between the teams and Odd Down have won the previous 2 meetings with a 7-1 aggregate.

Odd Down is going to stick with the 4-3-3 as there is a push to create goals by the coach. Goal Differential may be the point for winning the League or not. The 2 new strikers are set for this match as they need to get into the matches as soon as possible. Metcalfe is playing just to shake some of the rust off and will definitely be subbed early.

Welton Rovers play a 4-1-4-1 defensive formation and have traveled poorly. Odd Down is being picked to run away with this game.

Odd Down Lineup

M Elliott / Woods / Murray
ST Rungratsamee / Lokoga / Baldwin

22' Elliott strikes to goal from a free kick at about 25m out and he just barely misses the goal.

Half: Danny Partridge subs in for Metcalfe. The team is told to not get complacent and careless out there. They have the lead and they need to keep it.

50' Partridge sends a low screaming pass to Woods in the box. Woods volleys the shot and it heads into the lower left corner of the net. GOAL! Odd Down is now up 2-0.

Match Analysis
The shift to the 4-3-3 has caught the league by surprise and the hesitancy is causing the defense to shine and clamp down and not allowing anything towards goal. It is a total defensive domination in an attacking style which makes it amazing.

The 3 points here are a big capture for the Downers as it could propel them to 1st, if not it will only put them 1 point behind Dawlish. Paul Porter was the captain of the defense and directed a lot and sent some great passes forward.

Weekly Notes
It was officially announced that Larkhall has been relegated, they are so far back there was no gaining ground for them.

Metcalfe and Boakye have both resumed full training after their long injuries.

Ben Wood is in the running for Western Premier Player of the Season.

Dawlish plays Larkhall and are up on Odd Down by 2 pts. It will take a win by the Downers to stay in contention. Here is hoping Dawlish goes into their match overconfident.

Match Notes
This is the second match between the two teams and Odd Down took the first match 2-1 to capture the three points and hope to do it here as well.

With a 2 week rest the entire lineup is ready to go. Odd Down will be running their new 4-3-3 attack formation to try and get more goals while Sherborne Town is running a 4-1-2-2-1 attacking formation. Sherborne are picked to struggle against Odd Down and the Downers should win this one.

Defense was a little rusty this match and wore out down towards the end. The loss of Hogarth was big and we won't know until the end of the week what his status is. It's actually a tough loss for the defense.

Tom Murray controlled to midfield for the Downers and was like a demon with his possession and fight. You can tell he wants to promote.

Dawlish just drew with Larkhall, the points are tied now between Odd Down and Dawlish at 71. Dawlish owns the Goal Differential by 1 goal. The Downers need to pick up several goals each match and hope that Dawlish stumbles down the stretch.

I think it's a combination of the fact we are level 9 teams playing and I am constantly attacking and the defenders are wearing down. The one thing I have noticed and I am guilty of this too, is that the computer subs strikers and mids but not a lot of defenders lately.

I have been trying the past month to sub 1 ST, 1 Mid and 1 Defender so I have fresh legs on in the last five minutes.

Weekly Notes
Hogarth sustained a sprained knee in the match and will be out for 3 more weeks.

Match Notes
This is the second meeting between the two teams and Odd Down owned the first one collecting the 3 points off of a 2-1 victory.

Odd Down will come out in their new 4-3-3 attack formation. Bristol plays a 3-4-3 attacking formation and are picked as the dogs today.

14' Woods sends a pass from the corner and Porter heads it, it bounces of the top bar and the defense sends it out of bounds for a corner kick.

23' Woods with a corner kick sends the ball to far post and Porters header misses the goal just barely.

Match Analysis

Horrible play, as you can see the shots were going every where but to the goal. The players were sloppy and played horribly. There was a lot of yelling and throwing things around by Joel Sutton at the end. It's been the only time this season he has been upset.

It was a mistake to start Bulembi over Lokonga as he completely collapsed this match and placing Hobbs instead of Elliott as a starter was a bad move to.

The one thing that may get Joel suspended and fined is the fact he was ready to murder referee Matthew Bristow who didn't have the best game of his career. There may be choice words said at the conference.

This may put all hopes of promotion and even being in the hunt out of it for Odd Down.

Weekly Notes
Porter is suspended for two matches due to his red card at the last match. The appeal did not work.

Wright is out for 3 weeks due to a damaged elbow.

Match Notes

This is a historic match for both teams. In Odd Down's 110 year history they have never been to the final and the same is to be said with Sherborne Town and their 117 year history.

This will be the third meeting of the two teams this season and Odd Down have owned the prior two in Western Premier play.

Sherborne runs a 4-1-2-2-1 Attacking formation. Odd Down is picked to win but with the injuries and suspensions to the defensive side of the team, it will be tough.

Alright, here is where we stand for wining the league.

1st Dawlish 74 points
2nd Odd Down 71 points
3rd Bristol MF 70 Points

It is no secret that Odd Down has to win their last 2 games. Dawlish has to lose at least 1 of their games or draw both of them to benefit Odd Down. Right now Dawlish has a +6 on GD. Odd Down will have to score a bunch of goals in order to win on the tie breaker that way.

Bristol can take Odd Down if they win and Odd Down loses.

There is a potential right now that Odd Down can be in 3rd after the last game or they could take the League.

Ok, this last game is going to be the deciding factor.

1st Dawlish 77 points
2nd Odd Down 74 points
3rd Bristol MF 71 points

Dawlish must lose this game and Odd Down must win and score a bunch of goals..the best part of this would be if Dawlish takes an ass kicking and Odd Down pours it on.

Final Housekeeping for End of Season

Dawlish picked up promotion with 80 points and a +50 GD while Odd Down came in 2nd with 77 points and +45 GD. Sad to see Sherborne Town get relegated considering they played for the Les Phillips Cup. Larkhall was a lost cause a while ago.

Yeah, that was Jack and he also leads in Man of the Match nominations. He is good at the long pass down the flank, let the striker run to it and take the keeper on one on one.

2011 - 2012 Season

The goal is promotion this season...it's going to be tough as several teams have declared semi-pro status and paying players in the league this season.

Part of this means changing staff, bringing in new players and that is what was done in the off season.

Players Out
Stuart Elliot left to Shepshed for $70/wk contract
Ian Pitt released on a free
Connor Whelan released on a free
Karl Allsop released on a free

Players In
Lacquan Esdaile 19 yr old DC from Stalybridge (Valued at $3k)
Jamie Taylor 20 yr old ST from Bath
Paul Booth 34 yr old ST from Farnborough
Adie Harris 20 yr old MC from Bath
James Martin 22 yr old MC from Chippenham
Kent Eriksen 20 yr old ST from Norway
Asa Charlton 33 yr old DLC from Corby
Wayne Evans 39 yr old DR from Newton

Staff
The staff situation was unique as there was a feeling of not enough coaches to the players last season. The board was asked for more coaches and they agreed. They also agreed to more scouts as well.

Staff Out
Dave Harlowe was terminated, he just wasn't agreeable with anyone.

Staff In

Assistant Coach Ricky O'Flaherty
Coach Paul Mooney
Coach Robert Curran
Scout James Tipping (New Zealand)
Scout Craig Lindsey (Scotland)
Scout Neil Morris (Wales)
Scout Colin Gallagher (Ireland)

Expectations
Western Premier - Win Promotion
English FA Cup - Reach the English FA Cup of the FA Cup
FA Vase - Reach the second round of the FA Vase
Somerset County FA Premier Cup - Reach the second round of the Somerset Premier Cup
Les Phillips Cup - Read the semi final of the Les Phillips Cup.

Match Analysis
Where did the team that was supposed to dominate the Downers go? Very curious. This game is still no determination on how well this squad will play in the league but a 3-1 win with the only goal coming in extra minutes shows how solid this Odd Down team is.

Murray, Esdaile and Morris were all over the place and Warlingham could not stop them.

Man of the Match
Tom Murray (8.1) - 1 goal, 1 assist.

Match Analysis
Do not know what to take away from this match other than Odd Down couldn't finish and the referee was the true effect of the outcome of this match. The fact the Downers were able to keep it close down a man for as long as they were without him says something.

The loss hurts as it doesn't meet expectations with the board and knocks the Downers out. The only way to spin it is that it allows focus on the other competitions.

Man of the Match
Ayoola Olatunde (7.2) 1 goal

Match Analysis
Welcome to the next level Merthyr T! It was a complete all around performance from all players on the pitch for Odd Down. The newbies up front put their foot on the throat and never let it up.

Taylor was amazing with his movements and the 3 midfielders were dedicated to proving they could handle it without Murray in the lineup.

Man of the Match
Paul Booth (9.6) - 3 Goals

Jamie Taylor had the same rating and had earned 2 goals and 2 assists in the match. The defense was rated in the 8's as well. It was a great performance all around.

6 shots on target and 4 goals, not a bad a conversion for a team that was tortured by Bristol MF at the end of the season. The smack was flying by both coaches before the game, but when Sutton asked his players to back him up they did.

Bristol walked into a pissed off Buzz Saw that wants to promote.

Man of the Match

Match Analysis
The Downers have been absolutely unforgiving with shooting. They know if they throw enough at the keeper he can't stop it all. Domination in the air today helped with this game.

Man of the Match

Tom Murray (8.3) - 1 Goal

Tom displayed amazing skills in the midfield with 3 interceptions and going 14/23 on his passes.

Match Analysis
The board may not be to happy on this loss but it was one that doesn't matter much due to the fact the team will make more money if they can last longer in the vase. They do that with healthy starters. Needless to say, this is going to be a rough game to swallow because obviously, the depth on the squad isn't that good.

With the Downers in complete control, this was a shocker. However, the referee's were piss poor. Both offsides calls were not even close. On the replay the attacking players were at least 5 steps behind the line. In fact, it is being said that the goal in the 42nd minute should have stood. That would have caused a lot of different choices in subs and tactics if it would have stood.
