We travel to Denver!

We manage to escape with a win 14-13.

CB Lenny McAllister is out VERY LONG TERM.

Caldwell is Game MVP with 196 yards on 25 carries and a score. Kramer rushed for the other score. Hernandez had a questionable day, but only threw it 16 times, so that comes wihtte territory. Schafer with a pick. Morris and Kemp each had 4 KRB.

AFC Championship

We travel to Tennessee, to face a team who we split with in the regular season, and who beat us at their place and took the division crown from us.

Tennessee has the #2 seed in the playoffs, we defeated the #1 seed last week in the 13-3 Broncos.

Ok, here we go. I was tempted to go with Mayes and/or Carlisle, but I am sticking with my peops.

We lose 20-30

Caldwell has 58 yards on 14 carries
Hernandez is 20 of 29 for 289, 2:2
Parrish has 195 yards, 10 catches, 2 scores, Game MVP
No picks, one sack

Tennessee beats New Orleans 24-6 in the 2031 Super Bowl

Definitely a down year.

Others of Note:

While playing for the Eagles, CB Mercury Greene got his first All Pro
DT Raymond Stargell, Broncos, I just traded him

We will take a look more closely and what worked, and what didn’t, shortly.

Individual Stats:

QB Ernest Mayes, 57.2%, 2209, 12:12, 75.5 rating, 10 starts
QB Johnny Hernandez, 63.4%, 10:6, 95.2 rating, 6 starts

That’s a pretty glaringly obvious statline. Hernandez earned it. Mayes in his 14th year, hit the wall just one year after winning All Pro. Happens. Time to move on.

RB Rick Caldwell, 303 for 1310, 10 TD, 4.3 average.
FB Tracy Kramer, 57 for 235, 4 TD

Now, this is not bad. It’s not embarrassing or anything. He just rarely dominated a game like some of the other players would, but he is steady. There were a lot of games where he was not getting his carries. Carlisle last year had 380 carries to Caldwell’s 303 this year.

WR Pete Waddle, 1090 yards, 61 catches, 9 TD.
WR Travis Parrish, 74, 949, 4
TE Carman, 40, 427, 1

The fact that Waddle had over 1000 yards is amazing considering QB problems during the year but Hernandez knew how to get the ball to the hot hand, whether Parrish or Waddle. Parrish is leaving this year, which is a shame because this is a strong year for my #2 guy, and I would have been happy to have built on that in the future.

McCalister had a KR TD.

K Huffman was 29 of 33, long of 56.
P Kelly Russell, in his rookie season, went 38 of 83 inside the 20 and had a punting average a full 1.2 yards better than Rayburn did last year. He‘s pretty green so there is hope.

DE Bert Curtain, 19 sacks, 3rd in league. 6 blocked passes (tied for tops) and 5 QB hurries.
DE Floyd Gardner, 13 sacks, 9th in league, 5 blocked passes and 6 hurries

I actually have a real DE tandem for the first time ever. They both have great years.

Nobody else had more than 2 sacks.

S Jon Prescott, 9 picks, 11 pasdef and was ROBBED for All Pro. Tied for 2nd most picks in the league (with Ackerman). Tied for 8th most pasdef in the league. There are four S spots in All Pro and Prescott couldn’t qualify for ONE? That’s a robbery.
CB Jim Ackerman, 9 picks, 1 pasdef
S Derek Long, 5 picks, 14 pasdef, which led the league. He’s back!
CB Ordona, 1 pick, 4 pasdef - That’s not going to cut it.

C Les Morris, 36 KRB, 2nd most in league, 3 sacks allowed
OT Kemp, 21 and 6
OG Holliday, 16 and 8. WTF?
OG Lee, 17 and 4. 11 starts
OT Casarez, 14 and 4.

What happened to my star Gs? They got bushwhacked.

You want to know why my rushing was down? My o line was down.

To be fair, there were games when there were 8 or 9 KRB and Caldwell had 60 yards, so there is a little of both I think.

The simple fact is my O Line underperformed, so my RB underachieved during the same year my star studly future HOF QB finally got old. It was not a good recipe.

Offensive Player of the Year: C Les Morris - When a lot of other players were having set back years, Morris turned in an absolute terror of a season. Great job Les!
Defensive Player of the Year: S Jon Prescott - The league may snub you, but I won’t . 9 picks! 11 pasdef! This guy was a force in the backfield, and a powerful player to be reckoned with. Here’s your trophy for a battle well fought.
Special Teams Player of the Year: K Christian Huffman. You Can’t argue another All Pro berth and just 4 missed Fgs
Rookie of the Year: P Kelly Russell - You replace an All Pro punter and do better at punting than him in your first year when still green, that says RotY to me.
Heart Award: QB Johnny Hernandez - Despite being livid as all can get, he came in and did a very professional job for me off the bench. Great job!

Important Players Leaving This Year:

WR Travis Parrish
DT Jay Phillips - patch

This year, K Claude Johnson eclipsed some random for most Fgs kicked in a career.

CB Gerard Skipper, 82%, Ohio, 1 honor, 40 picks. Can we stop putting in every little corner please?

Two more of my inductees and another who got in largely on the back of his work with me. That’s where he got all of his honors.

Let’s hit Free Agency

I get a couple of trade offers. A 5th for one of my backup C and a 1st and a C for Caldwell.

I have 35 players, 13 million

I am picking 30th this year.

I wish I still had Gino Collett on my team. I’d dump Holliday and make Collett my starter. Ah well.

I extend Ordona‘s contract by a few years.

My new scout loves Zuchowski and Martinez looks better too. Nice!

He does not like Hernandez as much, and that’s a problem.

He LOVES Jackie Kemp, who exploded to 86 and 60 in blocking potentials. Both much higher than before. He also likes 7th rounder Isaac Rice more than before too.

Overall, a good switch, but Hernandez’s erosion is problematic.

I extend Bert Curtain by two more years happily. I;m going to to everything I can to get him HoF as long as it doesn’t hurt my team. This guy is the definition of overachiever. He Didn’t get better with the vie wof my new scout either.

I extend Tracy Kramer by two years

Players in the final year of their contract of note, QB Johnny Hernandez, RB Carlisle, RB Caldwell, G Holliday, K Huffman, DT Billy Joe Lane, S Jon Prescott, LB Mo Strother. C Les Morris

I sign Prescott for 4 more years.

I cut LB Strother

I trade Caldwell to the Cards for their 1/18 pick.

I sign RB Maurice Carlisle to a three year deal.

I extend Huffman by two years.

I trade C Andre Baker to the 49ers for their 5 rounder this year. That was a 3rd rounder going to a 5th rounder, a down grade. The 49ers didn’t have a C on their roster, now they’ve got a starter.

I trade QB Ernest Mayes to the Cowboys for their 2nd rounder this year. They did not have a QB on their roster. The problem is that Hernandez will not start for me for too long. He’s pissed about a lack of playing time and that will never come back. He will not resign with me, period.

With all due respect, if you were being handed the keys to one of THE franchises of all time, would you complain that you didn’t start as much as you could have since the guy you were behind was MVP twice in the past four years? Would you say no? Of course not.

I extend Les Morris for a year and Bruce Holliday for two. Let’s hope they can have more all pros with me.

There is a really great QB, Grady High, in the draft. I might have a shot at moving up to get him if he falls a bit., He is not rated highly on the board.

I trade DT Billy Joe Lane to the Chargers for their 3rd and 5th this year

I have 30 players and 15 draft picks including the 1/18, 1/30 and 1/36.

Let’s see what we can do.

Week 17, I sign DT Claude Stewart to a cheap three year deal.

Needs:

QB eventually, RB perhaps, WR, OG perhaps, DT, DT, LB

The 3032 NFL Amateur Draft

Here we go. I am watching Grady High carefully.

Our pick arrives. High is on the board. Take him, or play game staking someone else and hoping he is still there at pick 30?

I gamble. I take a great receiver at 1/18.

Gamble paid off! He is still there at 1/30. Now what? Take him, or wait until 1/36?

Take him now.

Draft Recap

1/18 - WR Ricky Doucette, Texas Tech
1/30 - QB Grady High, Wisconsin
1/36 - LB Alonzo Scott, Kansas
2/19 - DT Sammie Kennedy, Georgia
2/29 - CB Charlie Dudzik, Oklahoma State
2/30 - DE Marshall Jones, Florida State
3/12 - WR Wesley Tuiososopo, Miami - Florida
3/30 - TE Clifton Villa, Wisconsin
3/36 - FB Emmanuel Kramer, Oregon State
4/30 - OT Frankie Leighton, Georgia Tech
5/12 - S Mark Blake, Alabama - Returner
5/21 - OG Todd Swinger, Wingate
5/30 - DT Jessie Anthony, UCLA
6/30 - CB Gabe Hamford, Samford - Returner
7/30 - LB Stanley Snyder, Howard

We spent a lot more $$ than anticipated. About 10 million more. Probably due to singing a QB.

We have a lot less $$ than I had anticipated. I had expected to have around 10 million in cap room coming out of the draft. I have less than 500k.

I trade QB Hernandez to the Eagles for their 3rd rounder next year. I also cut S James Cronin. He was a good backup, but I need the space in cap room.

I sign these UFA

QB Ernest Jones, Wofford
WR Ben Joyner, Air Force
CB Gino Sampson, Tennessee
LB Ike Brock, Northwest Louisiana State
OT Willie Quinn, Oregon State
DE Lorenzo Hutchins, Louisiana State

Let’s go camping!

We sold 27,800 tix

Whoot! Grady High did not bust. Whew!

Let’s look at my rooks:

QB Grady High, 31/83
LB Alonzo Scott, 23/81
WR Ricky Doucette, 38/80
DT Sammie Kennedy, 13/66
WR Wesley Tuiososopo, 31/64
FB Emmanuel Kramer, 27/64 (The Other Kramer at FB does not like this last name)
OT Frankie Leighton, 10/60
DE Marshall Jones, 16/58
LB Stanley Snyder, 17/53
DT Jessie Anthony, 21/52
CB Charlie Dudzik, 50/50 - BOOM!
TE Clifton Vila, 45/45
S Mark Blake, 34/34
CB Gabe Harpold, 16/32
OG Todd Swinger, 5/27 - BUST

I think this will be one of those iconic drafts. My team was beginning to run a little thin in talent and this was a major injection. A lot of these players look better than their scores, especially Dudzik. High, Scott and Doucette are all ranked highly, although I think the ranking on Scott is high for his skill set. If I got a franchise QB, WR, DT, maybe another DT or LB or OT or CB here, it was worth it.

I reject three trade offers made.

Okay, here is what we are all waiting for, Grady High’s skill set:

Screen: 14/58
Short: 28/99
Medium: 24/88
Long: 22/94
Deep: 17/78
3rd Down: 75
Accuracy: 22/94
Power: 23/85
Scramble Freq: 60
Endurance: 63

Assuming he grows into his potentials, that is a great QB.

Your 3032 Huntington Highlanders

QB Grady High - Oh My, Grady High. Here we go rook.
RB Maurice Carlisle - I’m sorry, please forgive me with a 1750+ yard season.
FB Tracy Kramer - Very nice. My only long term FB ever and he has 3 1st All Pro in last 3 years.
TE Brant Carman - Suffered from inconsistency at QB position. Can he regain himself with a green QB?
WR Pete Waddle - Expect A few down years with High learning on the job
WR Ricky Doucette - He can grow along with High
C Les Morris - The only high level performer on last year’s O Line, so I gave him a professional contract
OG Bruce Holliday - Entering 9th year, needs to prove something
OG Neil Lee - Back to previous highs please
OT Terrell Casarez - Fully developed after just one year. A solid OT
OT Jackie Kemp - Very solid here too
K Christian Huffman - Another All Pro last year. Awesome! 3rd in 5 years with us.
P Russell Kelly - Developed a lot over last year. I expect a great career and many All Pros
DE Bert Curtain - The guy is a wonder.
DE Floyd Gardner - Works very well with Curtain. The Golden Age of DE for me.
DT Claude Stewart - 4th round pick from last year gets his day in the sun
DT Sammie Kennedy - Despite uber-greenness, will start over slightly more developed DTs
LB Joseph Martinez - My new scout loves him. Back at MLB. Let’s see a great year from ya
LB Craig Zuchowski - My new scout loves him. Back at SLB. Needs a lot more development
LB Alonzo Scott - He’s not that great, but will start for me at WLB
CB Jim Ackerman - Awesome
CB Jimmy Ordona - If you don’t step it up this year, I don’t know if I’ll bring you back next
S Derek Long - Got his professional contract after a great year last year
S Jon Prescott - Robbed of All Pro last year. Motivation?

KR/PR WR Wesley Tuiososopo and CB Gabe Harpold

My starting LB were three 1st round LB taken 3 years ago, 2 years ago, and this past year. 3,2,1. All 1st rounders. After so many LB busts, is this finally my time to be in LB heaven?

We finish the preseason 4-0! We have a few injuries in the questionable range. DT Kennedy will sit for a few weeks.

We open with 4 games at home, giving my rookies a chance to get their sea legs before we go out into the yonder blue.

Week 1 - The Jaguars prove to be no real test as we beat them 44-20. MVP is Carlisle with 128 on 14, 3 TD. Here is High’s debut statline: 13 of 33, 167, 2:1. Not bad, but we are throwing too much. He hits Waddle and Kramer for scores.

Major Injury - OT Casarez is out for 2-3 months. His numbers do drop some too. OT rookie Frankie Leighton will be starting for the long haul.

Week 2 - We fell the Cyberhawks 24-14. S Long is MVP with a pick and a 91 yard fumble recovery for a TD. Morris had 5 KRB. Carlisle has 89 yards and a score on 20 carries. High hits Doucette for a score but tosses 3 picks.

Major Injury - OG Holliday is out 2-3 months with a dislocated knee. I IR him. I sign UFA Bo Fielding. Isaac Rice will start for the rest of the season, and he’s not bad. Two weeks, two starting O Line down for the long haul.

Week 3 - We crush the Ravens 51-0. Ouchie. S Moe Collins is Game MVP with a pick and sack. Prescott has a pick and INT RET TD. Zuchowski has a pick. Carlisle has 48 yards and 2 scores. Palmer adds a score after Carlisle goes down to injury.

Wow - QB Grady High, 20 of 27, 327, 2:0. That’s a flash of something there.

Doucette with 127 yards on 6 catches, his first 100+ game as a pro. Waddle and Carman have scores.

DT Kennedy is back for next week.

While looking at the QB stats for the first three games, I see several of mine there. Let’s take a look around the league at my Qbs:

QB Grady High - Doing well so far in his rookie year as the starter for us. I already like him.

QB Rufus Richardson - Starting for the Bears. Looks good. Has three years as starter there already. Not great stats though, 7th year in league.

QB Jesse Floyd - Starter for the Ravens, 5th year vet. Started for them last two years, and took them to the playoffs. Have to respect that!

QB Johnny Hernandez - Backup for the Eagles, but I don’t know why. He is much better than their starter.

QB Ernest Mayes - Starting for Cowboys. Not really one of mine as a draftee, but one of mine in spirit.

As you can see, many of the Qbs I trade end up doing really well for the team I trade them too. The Ravens go a QB to take them to the playoffs, the Bears for a 4 year starter, the Eagles got a QB better than they had, the Cowboys got an aged but quality starter.

Week 4 - We survive the Saint coming to town 26-24. S Long is MVP with 2 picks. Carlisle 137 yards, 19 carries, 1 score. Van DeWege caught two scores. Doucette with 109 yards, 8 grabs.

Now we have 3 on the road.

Week 5 - The era of good feelings ends when we lose 10-34 in Tennessee. I’ll skip the blow by blow.

Week 6 - We then CRUSH the Steelers 40-7 in their place. RAR! Grady High gets his first Game MVP with 18 of 27, 221, 2:0. He hit Waddle and Doucette for scores. Carlisle added 2 scores, 59 yards on 23 carries. Curtain with 2.5 sacks. No picks. Morris had 5 KRB

Week 7 - A loss to the Rams 17-20 in OT in their place ends our 3 game away streak. Carlisle, 19 for 90. Kramer with a score. Waddle with a score. Gardner with 3 sacks and Prescott with a pick.

Gardner is doubtful and will rest for a few weeks.

Week 8 - BYE

We have 2 games at home, 5 away, then finish with 2 at home.

Where has Ackerman been? Did he pitch a tent in the parking lot and camp out while the game is getting played?

Week 9 - Tennessee arrives and beats us in our own place 27-24. It was 24-17 with 5 minutes left in the game but they scored 10 in that span. Carlisle - 125, 23, 2. Van DeWege with a score. Ordona with a pick.

Week 10 - Forget it, I bring back DE Gardner early, we are hosting the 7-1 Bengals this week. We win 31-3. Carlisle is Game MVP with 176 and 2 scores on 26 carries. Dudzik with a pick. Stewart with two sacks. Anthony with 1.5 sacks. Kramer and Morris each with 4 KRB. Van DeWege recovers a special teams fumble and runs it for a score.

Here we go - FIVE weeks on the road. We are 6-3. Tennessee and Cincinnati are 7-2. Baltimore is 5-4. It’s getting crowded.

Week 11 - 7-13 loss to the Lone Stars. I’ll skip the stats.

Week 12 - 17-13 at the Bengals, we upend them. Whew! LB Martinez is Game Mvp with 12 tackles. Carlisle had 2 scores, 49 yards on 17 carries. No picks.

Week 13 - We lose 17-24 to the then 1 win Jaguars. Ouch. Good and bad back to bad. High hit Doucette and Van DeWege for scores. No picks, just one sack.

In the league, there are 6 teams with 8 wins, one with 9 and one with 10. Unless we go on a burning winning streak, we are not making it as a wild card. We pretty much have to win out and sit at 11-5 in order ot have a shot.

Week 14 - We win in Baltimore 17-14. Carlisle is Game MVP with 33 for 157 and 2. No picks. 4 KRB by Kemp, Lee, Leighton and Kramer.

OT Casarez is back from his injury.

Week 15 - 42-35 over the Dolphins and we finish a 5 game away stretch 3-2. Very respectable . High is Game MVP with 25 of 35, 279, 3:0. He hit Waddle for 104 yards, 2 scores, 6 catches and Doucette for a score. Carlisle added 120 yards on 28 carries and 2 scores. Collins with a pick. Gardner with 1.5 sacks.

Our final two games are two home games against 6-8 teams. Doable. We have lost the AFC Central, by being two games back of Tennessee and two games to go. We are tied with 9-5 Cincinnati.

Week 16 - 20-17 in OT over the Patriots. MVP with Grady High, 19 of 32, 259, 1:0. He hit Carman for a score. Carlisle added 71 yards, 1 score to his totals. Prescott with a pick.

The Bengals won too and are 10-5 just like us. There are four 10-5 teams vying for the three wild card spots. If we win, and just one of those loses, we are in. If we lose, we have to win some severe tiebreakers to get in.

Week 17 - We defeat the Steelers 21-14. Carlisle is Game MVP with 32 for 158 and 1. Waddle got a score. Blake and Long with picks. Morris and Kramer each had 5 KRB.

WR Ricky Doucette is questionable but I will be playing him.

Get this, Every one of those teams won, so we won a tiebreaker. There were four 11-5 teams, so one (The Colts) is sitting at home. In fact, we have the #4 seed, the highest WC slot. So we get a home game. Against a rival!

This looks good at first. Stop the run, establish the run, and you win. 11-5 and a win in the first round of the playoffs is a fine season. Again, let’s look under the hood, because this was obviously a down season for my players.

Individual Stats:

QB Grady High - 55.7%, 3166 yards, 19:12 ratio, 80.0 rating

This is not a bad season for a green rookie starter. Even this season High threw more TD than picks. There is room to grow but it was a fine first season.

RB Maurice Carlisle - 1567 rushing yards, 4.6 ypc, 21 rushing TD and NO ALL PRO? Led the league in TD. 3rd in rushing yards. No All Pro? Seriously?

WR Pete Waddle - 62, 870, 7 - Not bad considering
WR Ricky Doucette - 63, 861, 4 - Not bad considering both QB and rookie
TE Brant Carman - 45, 458, 3 - Again, not bad considering

WR Wesley Tuiososopo had 2 KR TD. Gabe Harpold had 1. Welsey led the league in PR TD and was 2nd in PR Avg. Harpold was 6th in league in PR Avg. Very nice gentlemen.

K Huffman 22 of 27, long of 51
P Kelly - 53 of 102 in 20, 43.6 average. 9 more in 20 than the next guy. A great average. 4th best PR Avg in league too. That’s a weapon.

DE Bert Curtain - 12 sacks, 7 QB Hurries
DE Floyd Gardner - 12 sacks, 2 Blocked Passes, 12 QB hurries (Led the league)

Again, solid years from both.

DT Claude Stewart, 6.5 sacks, 2 hurries
LB Joseph Martinez, 107 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 3 Blocked passes, 7 pasdef
LB Alonzo Scott - rookie LB with 4 sacks, 79 tackles, 6 pasdef

Good stuff here, no problems

S Derek Long, 5 picks, 2 pasdef, 1 fumrec TD
CB Jim Ackerman - 0 picks, 10 pasdef
S Jon Prescott - 3 and 6
CB Jimmy Ordona - 1 and 3

Ackerman - WTF? Ordona, looks like your days are numbered.

C Les Morris, 34 KRB, 3 sacks allowed
OG Neil Lee, 25 and 7
FB Tracy Kramer, 19 and 5
OG Isaac Rice, 16 and 3, 14 starts
OT Jackie Kemp, 14 and 14!
TE Brant Carman 13 and 0
OT Frankie Leighton, 13 and 3, 12 starts

First of all, Morris continues to produce. Awesome. Lee is acceptable. Holliday was IRed early. Rice was adequate as a substitute. Kemp, seriously, what is that? 14 sacks allowed? Seriously? That’s almost a sack allowed per game. That is embarrassing. Kramer, awesome. 19 KRB is just great from the FB spot.

Team Awards:

Offensive Player of the Year: RB Tracy Kramer - 19 KRB, 2 ground scores, 1 aerial score. Four All Pros in a row, all 1st team. This guy is quality nice.

Defensive Player of the Year: DE Floyd Gardner - 12 sacks led our team and 12 QB hurries led the league. No one jumped out, but he did solidly, and you can’t argue with solid.

Special Teams Player of the Year: P Russell Kelly - This was close as PR Wesley Tuiososopo was very good too. But Kelly was great in two areas - dominant to the point of winning us games.

Rookie of the Year: LB Alonzo Scott. There wasn‘t a rookie that was lights out great, but Scott was very solid. He was a factor for us on several occasions and led LBs on our team in sacks. Good job!

Heart Award: OG Isaac Rice, this sophomore from the 7th round last year did a perfectly acceptable job stepping into the starting role when Holliday went down early. I found his performance very solid. Thanks Isaac!

Carlisle’s 21 rushing Tds is the second most in a season. Who has the most? 22, Heath Shepherd, 2016 with the Rail Runners.

Rounding out the top ten seasons includes Carlisle,in 3030, Shepherd twice more in 2015 and 2017, Grady Pender in 2023 and then four bums who never ran for me.

Here we go:

Performance - 73
Value - 55
Profit - 65
Difficulty - 76

Score - 63

8 players added to the Hall of Fame.

LB Quinn Burroughs, 80%, S Mississippi, 6 honors, Yay!

Then a bunch of guys who never played for me. Burroughs was the last of my Albuquerque dynasty to make it, I suspect. Let’s take a look back:

The following players from my Albuquerque years are in the hall of Fame:

QB Tony Clements, drafted at San Antonio, played mostly in Albuquerque
RB Heath Shepherd - A house and a half. Tied with Morabito with the highest % of vote.
TE Ed Gardener - Awesome!
WR Donald Wagner - He was solid for years and years.
WR Jerome Baker - Also solid for years and years
C Marty Brennan - For years he was the best C in the league.
DT Ross Meadows - The draftee who defined a franchise
LB Quinn Burroughs - 6 all pro nods is nothing to sneeze at
CB Leon Morabito - No question of his talent or stats. Highest % vote tied with Shepherd
S Eric Carlson - Another great player
S Travis Westbrook - He was solid.

11 players in the HOF from my Albuquerque days.

Now we are about to enter the 5 years I spent at Richmond. Will anyone there be eligible? My guess is one, RB Ralph Barrett and a second, Grady Pender played for me in Cleveland/Huntington for most of his career but was NFL MVP for the Rattlesnakes in his final year there after I left.

My San Antonio HOFers:

QB Tony Clements, WR Marvin Graham, CB Jack Huntley, CB Clarence Hudson

Other players to spend significant parts of their career on my team in the HOF:

S Donovin Darius, CB Sam Madison, CB Samari Rolle, LB Ray Lewis, DE Phil Lee, S Tyrone Rexin, CB Leroy Bowlin, DE Tony Brackens, K Olindo Mare, and DE Christian Torres.

How many players from the Browns/Highlanders era will make the cut? I just finished my 11th season with the team. Here are my records:

12-5 - Lost in Division Round
17-2 - Super Bowl
17-2 - Super Bowl
14-5 - Lost in Super Bowl
14-4 - Lost in AFC Championship
15-4 - Super Bowl
16-3 - Lost in Super Bowl
15-5 - Lost in Super Bowl
18-1 - Super Bowl
14-5 - Lost in AFC Championship
12-6 - Lost in Division Round

11 years, 4 Super Bowl Titles, 3 losses in Super Bowl, playoffs every year. That’s a strong dynasty.

We’ll see who the new vanguard is.

Franchise:

11th highest value
20th best stadium
THE best roster

12th worst support
17th best economy
2nd lowest attendance by #, 17th most by %

We made 39 million

I think my coaching might be part of my problem, so I make an offer to a great coach. Let’s see what happens. I made a high offer, -9.5 million, but the Giants beat me at 14.5 million. Silly.

No one else tweaks me.

5 coaches are getting paid 20+ million a year. Another five 15-20 mill. Another 15 are 10-15.

I can’t compete with these folks in a small market like Huntington. We currently have the cheapest coach in the league and 2nd lowest lead scout in the league.

I massage my ticket prices a little again.

Free Agency here we come

We have 40 players under contract and 11 million under the cap

I extend Jim Ackerman by three years and OG Neil Lee by two and C Morris’s by two.

Time to make a move. I trade CB Jimmy Ordona to the Cowboys for their 2nd rounder this year, and a 4th and 7th next year.

It was time.

Good luck Ordona!

Okay, I have some players who need resigning or trading. Let’s figure some things out.

Brant Carman is extended by two years, LB Martinez by one year,

I trade OT Jackie Kemp to the Colts for their 1/27 pick. I have the 30th in each round.

I need to decide what to do with Long. He doesn’t want to reup. Play him this year and tag him? Or trade him and recoup some value, then draft a replacement?

I have 38 players and 10 draft picks. That’s 48 players, plus I need a K. I don‘t need the pick, and I probably don’t need the cap room. I’ll stick with him through the draft and see what’s up.

There are no great or even good K in FA. The draft is also K poor. Suck. I make an offer to FA Tito Shultz, old and not that great, but the best I’m going to get this year.

Week 4 - We sign him. My first FA signing in the early stages in ages.

I reject several trade offers including the 1/10 for Ackerman.

The 3033 NFL Amateur Draft

Here are my starter needs:

OT, RB perhaps, OG perhaps, CB perhaps, S perhaps

I also want a good backup QB

That’s pretty much it. I can BAP it except I need a start worthy OT somewhere.

My pick arrives at 1/27 and I take a look around the board. There’s a great DE Harvey Cox but I have three already. A strong C, Levon Cobb, but I’m set. A solid DT in Shaun Donnelly.

CB Lamar Torres - Great at everything except picks only 30. Dudzik is better with lower coverage skills but much better pickage.

Oh, this is an ugly draft.

Oh wait, never mind. There’s my new RB.

Torres goes 1/29. Makes my decision easy really. I don’ want to reach in the first.

Draft Recap

1/27 - RB Jake Duffy, Texas Tech
1/30 - DE Harvey Cox, Virginia
2/26 - OT Will Poston, Grambling
2/30 - DT Phil Jefferson, San Diego State
3/12 - QB William Winslett, Michigan
3/30 - S Dusty Rex, Portland State
4/30 - OG Geoff Lofton, Georgia
5/30 - CB Quinn Fletcher, Mississippi
6/30 - LB Deron Sherman, Virginia Tech
7/30 - WR Brain Hicks, Bowling Green

I trade Carlisle to the Steelers for their 2nd and 6th. Duffy looks like the next incarnation of my top backs and he is already very, very developed! He looks like Ralph Barrett.

I sign some players:

UFAs:

RB Shawn McBee, Utah
RB Lonny Farrell, Notre Dame
CB Brent O’Donnell, Tennessee
OT Jake Chapman, Howard

Let’s go camping!

30,200 tix sold

I reject a bunch of trade offers.

RB Jake Duffy eroded a bit. For example, when I picked him, he had 94 potential in ypc, now he has 82. He is still strong, and better than Carlisle.

I have plenty of cap room (10 million) so let’s look at some rookies:

DE Harvey Cox, 23/80 - Told you
DT Phil Jefferson, 32/75
RB Jake Duffy, 71/71
S Dusty Rex, 17/71
QB William Winslett, 20/69
LB Deron Sherman, 14/63
OG Geoff Lofton, 14/57
WR Brain Hicks, 31/53
OT Will Poston, 32/41 - He is MUCH better than this
CB Quinn Fletcher, 15/36 Here is an unusual bust. He busted as a returner, and now sucks, but his coverage is the same. ??? Weird

Another injection of talent. Duffy is a long term answer. Jefferson is better than the DTs I drafted last year to starter for me, and Cox is a star DE if I ever decide to let old Bert Curtain go. If not, I have great trade bait after he develops because he is good. Rex is not as good as he looks, he’s bad in all of the wrong places. He is no replacement for Derek Long.

DE Floyd Gardner - Solid stats
DT Claude Stewart - The 4th rounder from WVU three years ago had a strong season for me.
DT Phil Jefferson - Starts over more developed options because he is high quality.
LB Joseph Martinez - First professional contract but just for one year. I would still like you to step up.
LB Craig Zuchowski - Almost fully developed. Time to explode.
LB Alonzo Scott - I was happy with his rookie year at the WLB spot
CB Jim Ackerman - Let’s leave WTF-ville home for the year, okay?

We finish the exhibition games 4-0.

Here we go.

We open with 4 games on the road. 3 at home, 2 away, 5 at home and finish away and away. I hate these crazy streaky schedules.

If we can open strong, we have the schedule in the back half of the season

Week 1 - We crush the Ravens 29-0 at their place. That’s a quality win. UFA backup CB Brent O’Donnell is Game MVP in his first game as a pro with an 82 yards pick and return for a score. Duffy was 111 yards, 25 carries and a score in his debut. Ackerman also got a pick. Gardner with 1.5 sacks.

WR Waddle is questionable and benched for a few weeks with a sprained neck.

Week 2 - Our next victim is the Eagles who fall 31-14 before us. RB Jake Duffy gets his first MVP with 35 carries, 186 yards, 3 TD. That’s my guy. High hits Carman for a score. Long gets a pick. OG Lee grabs 6 KRB while Holliday notches 5 of his own.

Week 3 - We win in Cincinnati 27-20. S Jon Prescott is Game MVP after rocking 2 picks. Long got a pick while Gardner grabbed 1.5 more sacks. High went down and backup QB Squires came in and finished the game. Wesley Tuiososopo caught a TD from each QB. Duffy had 82 yards and a score.

QB Grady High is doubtful and downgraded to third on our depth chart. QB Alonzo Squires will be starting for us until his return. WR Pete Waddle will be back next week.

Week 4 - We lose in Washington, 23-34. Duffy - 20 carries, 80 yards. Squires - 14 of 34, 192 yards, 2:1. Waddle had 5 catches for 107 yards. Carman and Doucette had scores. Curtain grabbed a pair of sacks. Dudzik with his first pick of the year.

We finish the road trip a respectable 3-1.

Week 5 - We crush the Titans 30-0 in our home debut. Dudzik is Game MVP with a 66 yard pick and return, 2 total picks on the day. Long and S Blake also had picks. Duffy ran 28 times for 85 yards and a score. Squires went 18 of 25, 210, 2:0. Waddle and Carman caught TD passes.

I make an executive decision.

Squires is looking good, but he is not that great, and he is in the final year of his contract.

Now that he is a hot commodity, I look to move him. Nevermind, they won’t let me. Apparently the trade deadline here is after 2eek 5, not week 6. Ah well. I was going to move him and sign Johnny Hernandez for a year. He’s sitting out in FA. Hernandez would be an upgrade and we’d get a pick from Squires.

Ah well, I’ll stick with Squires.

Week 6 - Jake Duffy gets his first NFL Offensive Player of the Week and Game MVP as we take down the Jags 47-14. Duffy - 29, 134, 3. Squires has 20 of 36, 296, 2:0. Doucette and Tuiososopo catch scores. Long has two picks, O’Donnell gets another.

Squires is quickly making things….interesting.

I sign Hernandez, deactivate High, and make Hernandez 2nd on the depth chart. High is still looking not good and it’s been three weeks. Hopefully the rest will do him good.

Week 7 - Duffy is again OPotW and MVP with 45 carries, 225 yard,s and 2 scores and we beat the Cowboys 28-14. Kramer gets a rushing TD> Squires 20 of 27, 263, 0:0. Kramer, the FB, has 9 ctaches for 109 yards. His first, and likely ever 100 yard receiving game. I smiled when I saw that. We were held sackless. Picks by Prescott and Harpold. C Morris with 6 KRB.

OT Casarez is questionable.

Week 8 - BYE

I’m going to leave Casarez in. We have two away games before a 5 game home streak. These next two are going to be tough.

Week 9 - We take out the Titans in their place 30-15. Duffy is Game MVP after rocking 79 yards on 21 carries, a score, 42 receiving yards on 4 catches, and a catching TD. Squires went 22 of 36, 222, 2:0. Waddle caught the other score. Ackerman with a pick, Prescott with 2.

QB Grady High is back. But, let’s take a look at the hot hand

Squires has started 5 games and finished one. 57.2 %, 1295 yards, 9:1 ratio, 94 rating. That is fascinatingly good. Intriguingly good.

He’s just an adequate QB I drafted to be a good backup, but he is all developed. That‘s what a good backup can do. He didn’t throw a pick as a starter.

High will start again, he needs the development, but wow. Squires was good. I hope someone makes him an offer next year because that was solid. We are 7-1, 4-1 under Squires and 3-0 under High.

C Les Morris is doubtful and will not start.

Week 10 - We win in Pittsburgh, 17-3. Duffy is game MVP with 114 yards on 29 carries, 38 yards on 4 catches and a score. High, back from injury - 20 of 31, 229, 2:1. Waddle with the other score. No picks. Martinez is questionable and will start anyway.

Week 11 - We lose in our place 13-10 to the Chargers. Duffy - 132 on 22. High hit Doucette for a score. Ackerman with a pick.

Week 12 - We are bad hosts as Pittsburgh leaves the loser 14-31. Duffy, MVP, 95 on 30, 3 score.s Kramer caught a TD. Dudzik - pick. DT Stewart with 2 sacks.

Week 13 - We slap the Ravens 34-7. Duffy is NFL OPotW and G MVP with 20 carries for 216 yards and 4 scores. That’s my guy! Curtain added 2 sacks to his total. Ackerman with a pick.

C Morris will return next week.

Week 14 - We survive the Bengals 19-14. Grady High gest the 4th Game MVP of his career with 24 of 34, 228, 1:1. He hits Tuiososopo for a score. Duffy is STUFFED for 15 yards on 21 carries and a score. Ouch. Cox has a pick. Just one sack.

S Derek Long is doubtful and benched for afew weeks.

Week 15 - 31-24 over the Rail Runners in our final game of the season at home. CB Jim Ackerman is Game MVP with 2 picks. Dudzik and O’Donnell also had picks. Gardner nothced a pair of sacks. C Morris had 4 KRB., Duffy - 21 for 94. High with a rushing TD. High hit Duffy, Tuiososopo, and Kramer for scores.

Now we have a two game away set to finish the season.

At 12-2, we are doing solidly, but we finish the season away at 10-4 Jacksonville. If we lose and they win, who knows what will happen.

Week 16 - We lose 13-16 against the Colts in OT. Duffy is held to 37 on 18. Waddle has 7 catches, 113 yards, 1 TD. No picks.

The Jaguars won. We now have a date with destiny.

Week 17 - We travel to Jacksonville to face the 11-4 Jags.

We manage to win 34-31 in OT. Duffy is Game MVP with 17 for 109 and 2. Carman and Doucette had TD catches. Doucette had 106 yards on 7 grabs. Prescott and Dudzik nothced a pick each. Gardner finished the season with 1.5 more sacks.

We are 13-3 and have the #1 seed.

AFC Championship

The #1 seed 13-3 Huntington Highlanders host

The #2 seed 12-4 Oakland Raiders.

Last year, we lost in Oakland to knockus out. This year, we are hosting.

We lose 18-21.

That pisses me off, I really thought we had this one. I bet we’d win that game 7 or 8 out of 10 times.

Duffy - 18 for 139, 1 score
Waddle 100 yards, 5 catches
Tuiososopo with a score

No picks, just two sacks

Oakland is crushed in the Super Bowl 48-13 by Tampa Bay

Season Awards:

NFL MVP: RB Jake Duffy
NFL Offensive Player of the Year: RB Jake Duffy
NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year: RB Jake Duffy
1st Team All Pro: RB Jake Duffy, FB Tracy Kramer, TE Brant Carman, OG Neil Lee
2nd Team: K Tito Shultz, CB Jim Ackerman

Hello Jake! Not getting to the Super Bowl prevented any chance of him adding the Super Bowl MVP and the rare quinfecta. Still, hitting four in one season is pretty good. Jake is here, never fear.

Nice to see Lee , Ackerman and Carman back. Hello Shultz. He’s not that great, but he’s solid.

Others of Note:

CB Jimmy Ordona, All Pro 1st team. The Cowboys are happy with that trade. This is why, in my mind at least, the league still trades with me. Sure, I stock up on draft picks, but they get QBs that take them to the playoffs and All Pro DT and CB and more.
TE Ronnie Meadows, Rams. 10 years since his last All Pro. Now a 12 year vet. He was an All Pro for me in 2023, 2nd team All Pro.
WR Kenny Marshall, Vikings. 2nd Team All Pro.
WR Danny Parrish, Jets, 2nd team All Pro
C Ken Kwan, Giants, 2nd Team All Pro

I loved that Jim put our names in the player file when we purchased a game. I spotted my last name (very unusual) on this years team.
