The greatest comic strip of all time, coming soon to a theatre near you

http://www.cbc.ca/story/arts/nationa...pus040930.html

Quote:
Opus leaps from funny pages to film screens

LOS ANGELES - Opus, the neurotic penguin who first appeared in the Bloom County newspaper strip, is set to become the hero of his own feature film.

The proposed movie is the result of a deal between Miramax and the San Francisco-based animation firm Wild Brain Inc.

The picture will use computer-generated imagery to bring Opus to life.

Known for his strong feelings for his mother, Opus has been the star of three comic strips, beginning with Bloom County, which ran from 1980 to 1989.

Bloom County was followed by the Sunday-only strip Outland, which was retired in 1995. Opus, another Sunday-only offering, launched last year.

All three strips were the work of Berkeley Breathed, who took the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1987.

Opus and his sometimes-dead friend, Bill the Cat, appeared in the animated short A Wish for Wings That Work in 1991.

Screenwriter Craig Mazin, who had a hand in the script for Scary Movie 3, will adapt Breathed's character for the silver screen.

Wild Brain's work includes the Disney Channel's Higglytown Heroes, a series for preschoolers, and commercials for clients like Coca-Cola.

The deal is seen by some as an attempt on the part of the Walt Disney Co., Miramax's parent, to bulk up its animated offerings as its distribution deal with Pixar, creator of Finding Nemo and Toy Story, draws to an end next year.

I'm sure they took notes about how "Garfield" did a spectacular crash-and-burn that rivalled the Hindenburg, right?

No, that would be the "The second greatest comic strip of all time, coming soon to a theatre near you" thread.

The new strip lacks the quality of Bloom County, even Outland. I keep trying to read it, but it's less and less of a connection.

Hard to blame Breathed for trying to cash in, though.

By the way, if Mr. Breathed happens to be reading this, please note that I have excellent pool-cleaning skills and look better than you might think in speedos. Thank you.

I don't blame him if they want to make it but it's not Garfield type humor. Who is this for? Kids? At least Garfield could just fall into the kids film slots.

I don't like Opus. I've never laughed the way I laugh at Dilbert, Foxtrot, and Garfield. It's not really homour whenever I read it, but re-telling something in society. In a not-funny way.

Maybe I just don't get it.

Oh I agree - I don't think this is movie a particularly good idea. But if Breathed cashes in I'd like to at least get the pool boy job.

1. The Far Side and Calvin & Hobbes (tie)
2. Bloom County

Everything else pales in comparison.

As the "pool boy", I think Fonzie will get that credit...
