The Unpredictability of Children

Nothing heavy like some of the stuff that's been posted on here about our kids. Just a little story about what happened last night with our 6-year old daughter that threw me for a loop.

She's already lost 3 teeth and we've been waiting a couple of weeks for one of her top front teeth to fall out. It's been basically dangling. So finally, she comes into the bedroom yesterday morning, and the thing is literally hanging by a thread. She twists it, it comes out. No blood, and you can already see the other tooth coming through. So naturally, she's excited as hell - she can't wait to go to sleep, get money from the tooth fairy, call the grand parents, etc.

Fast forward to last night...we put the tooth in her little tooth fairy mini-pillow, slip it under her pillow, and say goodnight to her. About 15 minutes later, we can hear a faint noise through the baby monitor in our 18-month old's room. That thing is so powerful, we can actually pick up conversations outside (and in fact, one night we heard some kids getting ready to bust our neighbor's mailbox). So, we aren't sure what it is - might be a dog outside, could be the baby - but it sounds like faint crying. We go to investigate, and sure enough, she's sobbing uncontrollably.

At first, I thought the dog did something to her (he sleeps with her, and sometimes she tries to pull him closer and he gets a bit pissy about it), but after several minutes, she finally chokes out that she doesn't want to give up her tooth. My wife and I were pretty much stunned. So we told her to write a note to the tooth fairy asking her if she could keep her tooth and to sign it and leave it on the ground next to her bed. That seemed to settle her down and everything went fine - she got her money and got to keep her tooth.

But after we left her room, my wife and I felt so bad for her, yet we were completely shocked that she had that kind of reaction - especially after she gave up her 3 other teeth. Maybe it has something to do with it being a front tooth? I don't know. It was a complete surprise, though. And I think we handled it pretty well, all things considered.

Whoa.

The *exact* same thing happened with my daughter earlier this year (she's 7). Also a top tooth. We had the same solution.

Huh. Must be a front-tooth thing. Did she lose teeth before and act fine with it? I think that's what was so strange to us.

Minus the tearful part, same sort of thing here over the 4th or 5th tooth lost. Not sure if it's a top-tooth thing or a "Y'know, I'm losing all of my teeth[/i] kinda thing.
