FOFC Highlander, 5/19/06: The Streak

Welcome to today's edition of Highlander. See here for the introductory game and the ideas behind it.

Hitting the Baseball Diamond for todays game. We have Persimmon Pflaggstettler, a New Zealander RF with a knack for the base hit. He's a .320 hitter. If Persimmon has 4 AB per game, and plays 150 games. What is the longest hitting streak (i.e. consecutive games with at least one hit) he will have?

I will use a random number generator to produce a number between 1 and 1000. If less than or equal to 320, hit. Else out. I will then count the number of hits PER Game, and see what the longest hit streak he has for the season.

Due to work travel, I'll run the game around 8 PM, so that will be the deadline for today. Next game should be run by the winner on Monday! Please submit Private Message with your answer in the subject line.

Batter Up!

This is the longest consecutive number of games with a hit right? Not the number of consecutive at bats with a hit?

I thought it was the consecutive number of bats with a hit from the phrasing of the initial post.

That's how I interpreted it.

In baseball parlance, a "hitting streak" connotates the number of consecutive games a player goes with a hit.

I will then count the number of hits PER Game

That phrase made me think he was talking about the longest consecutive hit streak, and not the longest consecutive streak of games with a hit. There is no need to keep track of hits per game, just yes or no he got a hit in this game, if you are going for the longest hitting streak in the conventional sense of games with a hit.

There is also not a need to count the hits per game if the streak is consecutive at-bats. Might as well just look at 600 at-bats then.

I've got my answer in assuming the hitting streak is counting the number of games with a hit. If my assumption is wrong, I won't win...pretty much the same result as if my assumption is right.

Either way my answer is probably off too. Just wanted to post my reasoning so my answer doesn't get laughed at too much

Persimmon Pflagstettler had a poor season. Although a career 0.320 hitter, he struggled to a 0.303 season with 182 hits on the season. As a result, he only had 4 hitting streaks of over 7 games. The longest was games 103-115 for a 13 game hit streak. The results?

Toddzilla: 13

I think we'll start the next game on Monday with Toddzilla's entry. Keep the standard intro as provided in the initial post with a history of winners. Also, you guys HAVE to get better at providing your answers in the subject line... the navigation of PM's SUCK!

Hope you all had fun! I'm hoping for another go sometime soon!

I misread and thought it was how long he could go from some starting point without going hitless. I didn't realize it was throughout a whole season. The one looks pretty stupid I guess.

I guess having a spreadsheet handy for all kinds of silly baseball related folly finally paid off.
