And the two teams play Friday night on ESPN. And I won't be watching to see the drama unfold!

Gary Payton and Sam Cassell on the same team?!?

Two brooding players with incredibly strong personalities...this should be an interesting last 30 games here in Milwaukee.

In general, I disagree with the idea of adding players with personality problems to teams at the trading deadline, especially a team like the Bucks. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Word from "sources" that our sports guy here in milwaukee has, state that there was to be another, seperate deal to send Cassell to the Knicks. This deal has fallen through.

Looks like the Bucks didn't plan on having these two headcases on the team at the same time. (Headcases, but very good players)

Here goes nothing.

Well, Karl has coached GP before, so maybe he knows something we don't.

The guy not getting put into the equation enough is Mason. He's a 25 year old who puts up 14 and 7 a night. He's getting better and is one of the best people in the NBA. (I've met the guy, though I won't change my name to IMetDesmondMason)

He's also a tough defensive player. I think both teams will be improved after this.

Well as an example of a hothead changing teams in the middle of the season, the Mavs grabbed Van Exel who had a loathing for Del Harris when he was the Lakers coach and they have patched things up and it has worked.

Both teams will be improved TroyF? While I think you hit on the main point of the trade that gets glossed over, that being that Desmond Mason is already a pretty good player, and will probably end up being an amazing player, I think the Sonics are screwed in this deal.

Now, I don't know much about Ollie and the other guy that Seattle got, but Ray Allen, while good, is nowhere near good enough to fill the gaping hole that losing GP and Mason leaves. I know the Sonics had to move Payton, because he wouldn't resign, but I think this makes a decent Sonics team much worse.

Sonics supposedly traded Kenny Anderson too... Don't know who their point guard is going to be now. Kevin Ollie or Joe Forte? Pretty strange trades going on. Ray Allen no longer a Buck.. just doesn't seem right. Looks like Cassell is next on the list.

Lot of interesting trades.... Gooden and Giricek for Mike Miller, Humphreys, and two picks. Miller's been getting injured a lot so I guess they had to dump him before he started going chronic like Grant Hill. Gooden should fit in better in Orlando especially with Shawn Kemp's drug woes again.

Also, Michael Redd gets to start now, and he is a baller. Good for him. Sonics got hosed.

I really don't understand the moves that the Sonics have made. You're sitting on two starting calibur point guards with big contracts. I understand the hit that you take by keeping one of them, but in both cases their contracts expire this season. So what do they do? Trade both of them. WTF? I can understand trading one, but now the starting PG is Ollie? And this benefits Seattle how?

Vince,

GP was unhappy in Seattle and the team was sliding because of it. Allen is a good player and a good guy. They were headed for the lottery and GP was headed out of town no matter what happened today.

They get a good player for him and free up some cap space to find someone who wants to play in Seattle. I think they will be an improved team, long term, from this trade.

Had this trade been made three yeasr ago it would have been great for both teams. Now it's just a yawner that won't mean squat diddly at the end of the year.

It looks like Karl got sick of the "Big 3" so he's dismantled them. Robinson to Atlanta, if i'm not mistaken, of course Allen to Seattle, and the attempt to send Cassel to New York. They were a special offensive weapon, that should have made the playoffs last year based on their talent but it just didn't work out, so Karl is trying to start over, w/ Payton who he's been w/ before.

I think Seattle got screwed big time. I'm a huge fan of Allen, even from his days at UConn. But I think Mason can contribute a lot to the team. Not quite the offensive force that Allen is but darn solid defense in addition to what he can provide offensively. And a bit more on the board. Plus, he and Lewis would've made a solid core to build on.

Getting rid of Payton is one thing - and I definitely agree he's been cancer'ish the last few years - but I definitely don't agree with giving up on Mason.

I do agree with IMetDesmondMason, though, that getting rid of a disruptive influence should definitely help the Sonics.

Cassell isn't a "true" PG, a la Stockton. He's a scoring guard in the same manner as Iverson and Marbury so having another point in the same lineup doesn't hurt. Karl has also brought in another ball handler and moved Cassell off the ball to score more than a few times.

Don't know that I'd exactly classify Kenny Anderson in that manner.

I guess that is a good point, TroyF. I still think they shouldn't have traded Mason. Maybe ask for less in return (Allen only?), or give up something different with Payton. In my opinion, Mason is too good a young talent to give up at a time when they are going to have to take a hit in losing a stellar player talent wise in Payton.

im a huge bucks fan and im torn about this trade. ray allen was a star period. he was the bucks team. he was also very involved in the community. you think bucks you think ray. payton means the same thing to the sonics. this completely changes the bucks identity. they are almost a defensive team now. ray-soft, cassel-soft. now they get two devensive guards, but cassel nor payton can play 2 and i can't see them existing on the court at the same time. plus there is now way cassel is happy being the number 2 point when he THINKS he is so good. now if the spree trade wouldve went through then the bucks made good moves, but im not sure if it is good or bad now. in two years is this going to be a ray allen for desmond mason trade because the bucks don't resign payton? i have questions that they will. were they just unloading ray's contract to better seel the team? to early to say

Why couldn't they? Cassell has never been a "pure" point in the manner of Cousy or Stockton. He's always had a scorer's mentality. And Karl has played Cassell off the ball a number of times already. Payton isn't exactly shy about scoring. A number of teams are also running with two "point guards" in the same backcourt. Off the top of my head, Dallas and Charlotte-turn-New Orleans are already doing so.

The question is can the Bucks sign Payton?

Without them winning it this year you have what was essentially Allen for Mason...

I guess they had to cut some payroll with Kukoc and Thomas taking up over 20mil next year but Michael Redd is also free agent after this season...should be interesting...
