NFL Overtime tidbit

"Since overtime was instituted in 1974 through 1993, 25.4 percent of such games were won by teams that had the first possession. That number stood at 36 percent last season.

Tampa Bay General Manager Rich McKay, who is on the NFL's competition committee that submits proposals for rule changes, said the increase is likely related to changes in the kicking game. The league's use of the K-Ball, a ball used by place-kickers and punters, has caused kickoffs to become shorter, while kickers are making 52 percent of their field goal attempts from 50 or more yards. From 1974 to 1993, only 13 percent of field goals from 50-plus yards were successful."
