Michigan hoops recruit involved in second plane crash

So basically the cliffs:

- 8 years ago Austin Hatch, a 2013 commitment, was in a plane crash that killed his mom and a sibling.

- Last night he is in another plane crash that killed his dad and step mom. He is in the ICU.

Obviously I know of this story because he is planning on signing with Michigan, but someone (hopefully) surviving two plane crashes has to have the most astronomical odds. Even being in two plane crashes has absurd odds.

Just unreal.

Here is a blurb from the Detroit News

Quote:
2013 commitment Austin Hatch and his family were involved in a tragic plane crash Friday evening near Charlevoix, MI.

The Indiana News Center is reporting that Austin’s father, Stephen Hatch, and his wife Kim were killed in the crash while Austin survived the accident and has been hospitalized in Traverse City.

This is the second time that the Hatch family has been involved in a plane crash. In 2003, Stephen Hatch was piloting a plane from Michigan to Fort Wayne which clipped a power pole. Austin was eight at the time but survived the crash. His mother, Julie, 11-year old sister Lindsay and 5-year old brother Ian were killed in the first crash. (Photo: Petoskey News)

Edit: Now that the story is out, it sounds like his dad piloted both crashes which decreases the odds of it happening I am sure, but still, someone surviving two crashes is still nuts.

I'm amazed that dad could get behind the wheel again after being the pilot when half his family died.

Evidently the father wasn't a great pilot either.. He was apparently partially at fault in the first crash. It seems the first time they hit a power pole, this time they crashed into a garage.. I wouldn't have gotten back in a plane with him after surviving the first crash. If the kid pulls through, I wonder if he will feel invincible, or totally swear off flying.

Well, he should be ok now that he won't be piloted by his dad (so wrong, but I wouldn't help it)

On a serious note though, pretty unbelievable his dad would continue flying after the first accident and I really question his judgement in putting his family at risk as he obviously should not have been piloting.

I'm probably going to hell for this, but I laughed my butt off at this. Thanks Captain Obvious.

It really is ridiculous that this guy continued to fly. He's killed 2 wives and 2 kids, with 1 in critical condition.

I'm surprised he was still allowed to fly. I'd figure if you had some type of fault in a plane crash you'd be banned or something.

To be a pilot takes a special kind of person. Any mistake could be your last, and it could cost the lives of as many others as trusted you. I'm interested in the technical aspects of flying, and enjoy flight sims quite a bit. But I live with far too large a margin of error to even consider further than that.

I've been in a private plane before. That pilot turned out to eventually be a colonel in the Air Force and an F-16 pilot. One of my friends has his license now, and while his father was a pilot and was the real deal, WWII bomber pilot and all that, I'd never get in a plane with my friend.
