AWFL presents the M19 2nd Best GM Award (+ free copy of M20!)

Like a combination of the Warriors, Bulls & Lakers dynasties all wrapped into one, the unbiased, brilliant, and highly stable committee once again recognizes GM RFF of the Houston Texans as the runaway Best GM of the cycle. Starting as t-20th highest OVR team in the league at 79 OVR, by s6 they had peaked at t-1st 88 OVR, and they maintained 85+ OVR throughout s5-s7. Moreover, they combined for a 38-10 regular season record across the 3 sim seasons, never winning fewer than 11 games and simming into the 2021 Super Bowl.

After once more brutally showing up the rest of the league in team building, let's move on to the committee's honorable mentions: BBJ in Dallas did a good job taking an excellent starting roster and continuing to see their OVR rise as the cycle continued, starting with an 84 OVR squad and ending at 87 by 2024. They were a consistent 9-10 game winner in sim seasons all cycle. GM Papa Perry on the Redskins took a decently rated team to start (81 OVR) and slowly built their overall talent level, closing with an 84 OVR squad that went 12-4 in 2024. The trade for JuJu was a win for WAS as it was for PIT, but a disastrous 2021 sim year after trading away what wound up being the #1 overall pick cost them a premium opportunity to add more elite talent. And finally, honorable mention to GM Seran of the Seahawks bounced back from a couple questionable decisions early, including shipping out QB Russell Wilson, to build a talented roster that peaked during their SB run in 2023 and nearly wound up with back to back rings after a 10-win season in 2024 saw them win the NFC again.

So who are the actual nominees for the 2nd Best GM Award?

arlen, Pittsburgh Steelers
Arlen started off with a stacked PIT team in 2018, the 2nd highest OVR team in the league to start in fact. But they were aging rapidly without a large stock of young talent behind them. He found a couple of quality deals, including trading away JuJu who later became the #1 rated WR in the league for WAS, but actually laid a solid foundation to get younger at multiple positions in exchange, drafting both an elite franchise QB and an elite downfield threat to replace PIT's stars. After dropping OVR rapidly due to the aging roster, PIT quickly bounced back up into the mid 80s range. They saw early-cycle sim year success with 11-5 and 14-2 seasons including a sim year SB appearance, but limped to a 5-10-1 record in 2024 as their OVR had diminished for a couple seasons in a row. Still, a masterful job overall reloading a talented team by mid-cycle.

NB, Cincinnati Bengals
In what was probably one of the toughest 3-4 teams to build this cycle, NB began with t-6th lowest rated team in Madden. On top of that, while CIN had some young quality stars such as WJ3 and defensive player of the cycle candidate Carl Lawson, it also was aging on offense. NB improved the roster to ~79 OVR most of the cycle while he built up an elite defense, culminating in an 11-5 record during the 2024 sim season, in which he went on to win the SB. After a couple of initial very poor sim year showings, his roster ultimately improved from 76 to 82 OVR by 2024.

hskr, Green Bay Packers
GM Hskr drafted the likely offensive MVP of the cycle in RB Branch Short with the 20th overall pick--that alone is practically enough to get him the conversation for 2nd best GM. The Packers started off at 81 OVR--tied for 13th in the league, so about average talent. They stumbled in the first sim season, somewhat as expected, but by 2021 they snuck in the playoffs and rode a red-hot defense to the Super Bowl and came home with a sim SB ring. The trade for impact WR Mike Evans and aforementioned MVP Short were crucial acquisitions on their path to the SB. By mid-cycle they had risen to 85 OVR, peaking in the 87-88 range in s5-s6 and finishing out strong in s7 with an 85 OVR rated team that won 10 games before being ousted by the eventual champs.

??, ????
Started tied for the worst roster in the league (74 OVR): check. Was mid-80s OVR by early cycle: check. Went 14-2 all three sim years for a 42-6 regular season record: check. Advanced to the conference championship game 2 out of the 3 years: check. The only knock you can even make against them is that they never quite got over the hump, and they traded a couple of superstars that perhaps could have gotten them there. But this is a team that went from league-worst to among the top handful of rosters by overall talent in the course of about two seasons, winning 14 games the very first sim year after starting at 74 OVR. They regularly acquired top tier talent on both sides of the ball throughout the cycle, building one of the most complete defenses in the league. When you stack up the total resumes, all that is more than enough to make HGR the extremely clear-cut second best GM of the M18 cycle.

The committee has spoken! Congratulations to HEELGreenRanger for being nearly as good of a GM as RFF, and for winning a free copy of Madden 20!
