Maybe not so generic...
Any of you guys tried out the demo for Front Office Football 2007? You'd be surprised how much real info is there...like the name of every NFL player. The team names are fake, but you can easily change them. Or you can have a completely custom league. Let me tell you, it's pretty darn sweet.Tags: None -
Re: Maybe not so generic...
The game literally has the "Indianapolis Stallions" with players including Marvin Harrison, Peyton Manning, Joseph Addai. All in the game with corresponding statistics. It cites a couple of Supreme Court cases that give it "fair use" justification under copyright law to use the names. (In case you're wondering, the cases are Cardtoons, L.C. v. Major League Baseball Players' Association, United States Court of Appeals, 10th Circuit, 1999 and C.B.C. Distribution and Marketing Inc. v. Major League Baseball Advanced Media and Major League Baseball Players' Association, United States District Court, Eastern Division of Missouri, 2006).
So yeah. Pretty sweet. If you want to take a look, the front OS page is linked to it from the staff review.Comment

Re: Maybe not so generic...
Interesting, and even surprising. Oh, yeah the EA/NFL deal covers both the NFL and NFLPA. It's clear EA wanted to leave 2K with as few options as possible.
For a text based game, I guess you could refer to names of players since they are public figures. The problem would really start when you have a picture or player model in the game. Then you are using the persons image and they have a right to protect that.
Still, it would seem that having of list of names for current, classic, and even college players would fly. They could just give every player a number and let you assign names to them.Comment

Re: Maybe not so generic...
If memory serves, EA bought the software company that makes Front Office Football about two years ago. You used to be able to download the game from EA's website.
Maybe the deal expired or was torn up or something.www.classicoldschoolgear.com

Re: Maybe not so generic...
EA has NOTHING to do with Front Office Football now. That deal expired about 5 years ago. Solecismic Software has released two independent versions of the game since the EA deal expired including this one.Comment
