Pop in NFL2K on Dreamcast and play for a while, then pop in NFL2K5. Huge difference. It's the same thing. Fanboys and haters simply love to hate without even giving a product a fair chance. Some posts on this thread are very evident of that. The fact is that EA released a patch that by and large fixed alot of the issues.......and they did it with 9 more months left for fans to play it before the next one comes out. 2K hasn't given football fans half the attention EA has this year. There's really no debating it. Stop hating on EA and start holding 2K accountable. APF2K8 deserved all those mediocre reviews because anybody with a shred of objectivity can recognize it was a mediocre offering in just about every way.........from the non-existent offline feature set to the over-rated cyborg-like Legends than make the game feel like NFL Blitz.
lol this is a ridiculous argument. Most people - even hardcore Madden fans - will say Madden 06 was about as disappointing as it could've possibly been. ANY forward progress wouldn't been viewed as marked improvement. The fact that there's so much dissatisfaction TODAY with Madden speaks to where the product actually is. It's just not a fun game. People can still make the argument that the last gen version of the game is better - not just as good, better - than the 360/PS3 game. In '07, people were saying the Wii version - not based on the next gen gengine mind you - was the best version lol. And you laughably act as if it's some sort of "fanboys not giving EA credit" issue. Please. We're in Super Bowl week - where's the talk of proud franchise moments? Or of great online games? And please don't bring up how sports games are rated by the videogame media - it's the same ones that rated The Show below a 7 last year, that gave Madden 06 an 8, that said Madden 08's gameplay deserved a "9.8", the same ones willing to rate NBA Live 06 (PS2) at a 9, then turn around and rate it horribly the next year (had to pick on IGN and TeamXBox for those gems).

I agree w/some of your criticisms of APF. But the sad thing is, even with everything the game lacks... most people say it has better gameplay than Madden. So it's good that the NFL license, minigames, and franchise are there to put it "over the top".

If 2K continues to make football games they are going to have to eventually build a new engine like they're doing for all their other sports games. And when they do, they will be WAY behind the 8 ball. APF is the only sports title for 2K sports using a last gen engine. Then they charging full price on top of that. 2K Sports doesn't deserve ANY "wiggle room". They had 3 years to work on that game and ended up just porting 2K5 and gutting all the offline features.
I'd like to see a new football game engine myself. But you casually forget a very important point - non-licensed sports games are risky at best. This isn't Blitz the League, where it can lean on violence as a primary selling point. Be realistic. The lack of the NFL license is the biggest factor in people's purchasing decision - it's the primary reason people say they need unlimited customization. Just so they can recreate the NFL. If you want to act as if Madden, APF, Backbreaker, and Tecmo Bowl all deserve the same consideration then I'd have to argue that's a ridiculous sentiment. Any non-licensed game is going to be behind 8-ball as you put it REGARDLESS of what they do. And regardless of how pliable these games can make themselves to psuedo-simulate the NFL experience, it's always going to come down to one thing - it's not a real NFL game. You take the NFL license away from Madden and I seriously SERIOUSLY doubt you'd have people begging EA to release an unlicensed game using that game engine. Perhaps you should try to make the argument why they would

That is the most important part of the argument sales might not be that good for APF but it cant be easy selling any kind of sports game without the liscence of the official league

Unless ur winning eleven then the full customization compensates. Thats why 2k should up the level of customization by miles next year and see what it does. This one year franchise mode WILL NOT cut it

Well with Backbreaker coming out I think 2K would do well doing two things. First releasing the game WELL before or WELL after BB and Madden. The market just wont hold 4 football games and especially two of them having no license. I would suggest coming out WELL after myself. That being said it leads me to point two. TAKE YOUR TIME. Develop this game as best as you can and load it up with spot on gameplay and features.

But 2K better hope that this backbreaker isn't as great as people think it will be or 2K will be forced to use this technology in the future.

lol, how is that a bad thing? You stress the need for 2k to take their time and load up on gameplay, only to whine about the possibility of 2k being "forced" to use technology that is better than canned animations. This is the same engine being used in GTA4 and the previews have been raving about it. I'd actually rather have euphoria running in APF...or even Madden.

It's a legit next gen engine that's getting a tech demo game built around it to prove it can work for football. If any company fails to license this for their games, they will be copping out and lazily stealing our money with old gen gameplay.

You were spot on, whomever it was that said they should just do a PES and make a customizable game.

Gameplay will win out, so why not just focus attention on that. Make a solid franchise mode and let the fans customize the game, upload our rosters, etc, and we're set.

To hell with EA and their money.

It may be a matter of how cost-prohibitive it is. It looks great in the new Star Wars game, but I can't speak for whatever difficulty there is in implementing it. My understanding is it works with pre-existing animation engines. I would think given the effort the Immersion people seem to be putting into Gamebreaker, I doubt they're looking at their game as merely being a tech demo.

I meant tech demo as a way to show off their engine. It's only somewhere around 4 games are using this, including GTA4 and backbreaker. Putting out a football game themselves helps show it off. I'd think that out of everyone, 2k would consider using it first, given how they aren't really confined to putting out a yearly game like EA is. 2k could take two years to develop a football game if they so desired.
