How can you not like this game?

It's because the CPU teams don't have all the defensive playbooks. So they call whatever they have.

That's not true. You can do a 2 player game with created teams, then pause the game and switch the player over to middle so the team is AI controlled, then with the other controller hit rematch. Now you are playing 2 teams with all of the play in the defensive playbook (for my teams anyhow). Guess what.... they still use Bear formation!

Do you have to have 2 controllers plugged in to make this work? I can't seem to find the option to use VIPs anywhere.

No you don't need two controllers. When you are at the team selection screen (where you pick the team your going to use and the one your going to go up against) press Y then scroll down to the bottom and you'll see something like "AI VIP selection" or something like that. But it will say AI VIP. Press A then select one of the VIPs you downloaded. You DID download someone's VIP right
Of course you can play against your own also. I believe you can.

You only need two controllers if you want to play against one of your own user created teams. I can play my Titans against my Cowboys if I want to for example.
