To put your players in a better position at the snap of the ball. If you called a cover 3 and wanted your short-zone safety closer to where he's going to cover, you could roll the coverage and have him down. This can put your players in a better position to make a better break on the ball when it is snapped and put another man in the box. It also takes the CB's far off the line which can guard against fades. Downside: giving away coverage, taking men OUT of position if you are disguising something else.

Gotta take a gamble sometimes. What i do is play the cornerback shade him in a bit and if i know they are going to swing pass, i just attack the running back. I manually put my safety on the wr.

Depends on your defensive setup, but if you see a lot of this and if you trust your safeties to contain longer pass plays, you can play cover 2 hard, shade to the outside, and your CBs will contain this play. In cover 2 soft you can also manage the play, keeping it to 5-8 yards in most cases.

The other solution is to get good on the sticks and handle the problem manually. You can control the LB on the side you think the swing is going to, and put the wraps on the back. You just have to make sure you respect your original zone assignment enough not to get burned.

Re: I'm looking to get started in APF...need some pointers Vets!

If you can predict the usual down and distance this occurs, take your best athlete at LB and manually knock it down or INT that pass. He'll second guess throwing it to the flats without thinking after that.

If you feel super gutsy and you KNOW which side it is going to: call a cover 3 strong to the side it is being thrown to and man up your short zone CB to the RB. This could work in cover 2 also. It gives up the flats to any other player, though.

Don't worry about pressuring the QB when a guy is doing this. You'll never get to him, so focus on getting your players out to tackle the RB in the flats.
