Three Step Drops

Could someone please explain to me what I'm doing wrong with these? It seems like my receivers don't even get near their cuts before I'm sacked every single time. Are you supposed to be doing all the reading of the defense presnap?

Re: Three Step Drops

In my opinion ideally you want to key in on only 1 or 2 defenders and make a throw based off that. I like to watch the CB or S of the side I'm throwing to in a short drop and react accordingly. It's pretty easy to see when the CB's are in a short zone because they stop backpedaling, or they don't backpedal at all.

Re: Three Step Drops

3 Step drops (all of the '90' plays) are designed for short routes and meant to be thrown very, very fast. Odds are you aren't getting rid of the ball fast enough.

On any 90 based played, I take control of the QB and turn it into a 5 step drop so I have the option of the longer routes.

Wouldn't the longer drop leave your qb vulnerable to the outside rush?

Yes and no. No as long as your drop back is reasonable. Yes if you drop back 15 steps. A 5 step drop is fine though. If you watch how the line plays in Practice mode the line isn't all that different, only real difference is the DE and how far back they drop (hence why a 5 step drop is desirable and beyond that isn't).
