Re: Calling all APF2K8 Guru's: Need Help!!!

The CPU is going to break off a ridiculous run or three a game. You should still keep them between 80-120 yards though.

The big key are the line stunts. Gap Right/Gap Left is very important. Fan and Pinch are compliments. I normally slant to the wide side of the field, but against a team that counters and isos I like to pinch.

You also need your talent at defensive end. The outside run is the most dangerous, and a good end can disengage and stop those. They really destroy the stretch play. I like Too Tall (silver) and Simmons (Bronze) or Bethea (Silver).

My philosophy is that the run up the middle isn't going to hurt all that much. The CPU isn't that good at hitting holes, the safeties take much better angles, and someone should branch off a block at some point. If they run the outside the poor angles come into play and there is nobody there if we miss the tackle.

Key zone is a good run stopper coverage. It's a cover 3, but both safeties play up and the MLB has the deep middle. The Cover 3 plays are good, but you'll need to control the SS for it to really be effective).

Blitzing is very dangerous, and usually ineffective. Blitzers take bad angles, and they frequently run right past the ball. If you do blitz, do it manually and make sure you control your gap.

Getting a GOLD LB is only putting a band-aid on the wound. To be an effective run stopper you need to learn how to manually control an LB. Van Pelt, BRazile, etc. can tackle any Hb in the game. You need to learn how to use them.

What is your exact team build so I can give my honest opinion in.

Add John Anderson to that list. He's an incredibly sure tackler. Banks is also very reliable.

Honestly any LB can tackle any RB in this game. Now if you want the computer to play for you that's a different story.
A combination of correct defensive plays & getting in the right position for a gang-tackle is how you take down HBs effectively in this game.

The only HB I have had problem in this game is OJ, he can easily shed one to two defenders every other play even when your in position.

It's a tricky game, but from many years playing this game it's about correct play calling & manual control.

Re: Calling all APF2K8 Guru's: Need Help!!!

Played Earl and the Federals last night. He ran for 151,but only cause he had an 80 yard run where he just broke like 5 tackles which was crazy.but most of the game i kept him in check.

now that i am not blitzing and taking better tackling angles I am really stopping the run.I control my safety (cliff harris) and I am in on every tackle, usually right at or behind the line. I played against OJ today and he only had 45 yards on 21 carries,so thanks for the great tips guys!!!

F'sho. Banks and Van Pelt are lights-out. I have an "All-Time" Browns team...

G-CAP FB Jim Brown
G-HB Leroy Kelly
S-S Eric Turner
S-WR Bobby Mitchell (Plays TE in Jacks sets to run reverses)
S-WR Dante Lavelli
B-ILB Chuck Noll
B-OLB Brad Van Pelt
B-ILBPepper Johnson
B-OLB Carl Banks
B-QB Bernie Kosar
B-I don't remember... [lol]

It's really not an all-time team, but I do have a few of the best (JB, Leroy, ET, Bobby Mitchell) amidst the best of the rest (my linebacking corps - I obviously run a 3-4).

Even though a few guys (like Van Pelt) didn't play with Cleveland until the end of their career, they play great D and are really good at shutting down the run. Especially Van Pelt...
