Charge up with the A button before you press intercept.

You'll catch a lot more balls that way.

I always thought this but I have never succeeded. Often times though the player I'm controlling will make a very athletic play when trying to knock the ball down. Idk if it has anything to do with charging up though but it certainly would make sense.
