The times they are a changing. Harbaugh and the option are gone, and the spread vertical offense is making its triumphant return! Drew Brees and Co. are back to doing what they do best: playing competitive uptempo football. Although they're not quite there yet, last week's loss showed signs of improvement, and has given fans in the big easy something to talk about. New coach Jason Tharp calls his team a "work in progress", but assures the fans "there will be plenty of exciting football to be played this season". With a healthy Drew Brees and a rejuvenated defense, maybe these Saints can turn this season around and have something positive to lean on heading into the offseason.
After a tough loss to the Lions, The Saints get their shot at another NFC North opponent, and this time come out on top. Drew Brees and company lined up toe to toe with Aaron Rodgers and his Green Bay Packers and hang on late to secure a 26-20 victory. In what has been a slow start to the season, this win will help ease the pain of what is still a losing record.
On a rainy night in Charlotte, the Saints gave the Panthers everything they could handle, but fell short of victory in the last seconds. After posting a 20-10 halftime lead, primary on the legs of Pierre Thomas, the Saints surrendered 14 points before getting a touchdown of their own. The panthers weren't finished though as Carolina QB Cam Newton orchestrated a beautiful game winning drive to secure the victory. The Saints know they have to put this loss behind them as soon as possible, for they host the 6-2 San Francisco 49ers Sunday.
A dominant defensive performance, and a true to form day from Drew Brees lifted the Saints over the 49ers 26-17. We saw a familiar Drew Brees this week, completing 72.2 percent of his passes for 370 yards. Pierre Thomas played a vital role in the red zone converting twice for touchdowns. The defense is where the real story is though, holding Frank Gore and the 49ers backs to under 75 yards rushing, and sacking QB Colin Kaepernick on several occasions.
That's 3 in a row. The Saints down the Ravens in the dome to improve to 5-6 and continue the hunt for the postseason. QB Drew Brees was turnover prone for most of the day but the team overcame the struggles to pull of the victory.
"I could not be more Proud of the way our guys played". These were Coach Tharp's words in a post game interview after his team handed the division rival Panthers a 48-13 beating."We played a full four quarter game, which is something I thought we struggled with last season, so it was nice to see that kind of Execution and focus out on the field".The Panthers did not go down without a fight though, as Carolina Qb Cam Newton tried desperatley to rally his fellow players, but whenever they tried, the New Orleans defense was there to make a play."My hat goes off to our entire defense, those guys really bought into this weeks gameplan and it really showed on the field. This Panthers team is a great team and we approached this game with a great deal of respect towards the team and its coaches, we just had the better plan for the game". A new addition to the team, Running back Kendall Hunter, had a spectacular day rushing for 178 yards on 28 carries and scoring three times. The Saints are home again next week, as they face the Green Bay Packers of the NFC North.
