Re: Backbreaker = Failure??

It depends upon whether EA buys the technology or not as to whether or not it's a failure. Because IMO the company made it with the intent of selling the technology more than creating an actual game.

Re: Backbreaker = Failure??

Is BB a a failure financially? That is for the company to decide. It hasn't been released in Europe yet (seems to have some interest). They have no license fees, spent little on advertising and have a very small staff. That's a very different equation than most games.

Is it a failure technically? If this is a tech demo for tackling and collisions on the fly, it is wildly successful.

Is it a failure as a game? In a two week time period there are fairly complete NFL and college teams to download (and a player editor.) There is a definite love/hate with this game. The people that took the time to learn the game and allow things to become 2nd nature love it. They love the camera and the passing. The guys who played 7 demo games or didn't take the time or had no desire to get used to the camera and the passing hate it (e.g. reviewers). As for popularity, the game may have failed. It has failed in the same way APF2K8 failed as far as popularity. BB is lacking some features, but there is a very solid foundation laid to become great. If that is all the publishers desired, this game is an incredible success. That may be the reason they did not advertise this game. The goal may have been to get the technology out there in a football game and get consumer feedback for the next installment.

For anyone who says that a football game cannot succeed without an NFL license I have 4 words for you: Front Page Sports Football. In fact I dream every day of that game coming back on the PC.

Me too man! It's my all time favorite series. I remember I'd spend hours designing crazy plays. Then hours working on my team. I'd have 20 hours in the game before I even took the field! Now that's when you know you've done a great job with a game!!!

I spent 3 months creating the whole league from scratch, making playbooks for every team, altering their tendencies, etc, before I would even start a season.

That was another era though, back when more of us still played sports games on the PC, and would put in the time to mod the game to our liking. Most people today aren't going to be bothered with all that. Truthfully, a non licensed game is a very tough sell to the modern gamer.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

With the logo editor in BB, the equation may have changed. We are playing with exact NFL/NCAA logos and correct player names, numbers and skin color. If the next release contains some of the missing features (and a dumbed down arcade option) wanted by the masses (and reviewers), everyone will know you can have NFL/college teams, logos and rosters in BB.
