A strong finish to the 2021 season prompted then Tiger GM Al Avila to proclaim that "The rebuild is over." The Tigers expected to contend in 2022. They signed Javier Baez, fill a big hole at shortstop, signed starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez, then traded for outfielder Austin Meadows.
Things came crashing down. The Tigers limped to a 66-96 season. Everything that could go wrong, did. Two starters the Tigers were counting on, Casey Mize, and Tarik Skubal were limited to just 23 starts between them. Mize was lost to Tommy John surgery, and will almost certainly miss the entire 2023 season. Skubal had Flexor Tendon surgery, and will miss at least the first half of 2023. Meadows, who was acquired towards the end of Spring Training, missed all but 36 games due to a variety of injuries. Top prospect Riley Greene missed the first couple months of the season, and didn't quite live up to expectations upon his return. Spencer Torkelson made the team out of spring training, and a lot was expected of him. But he struggled early, got demoted, then didn't impress much upon a september recall.
This prompted ownership to fire Avila. Scott Harris was brought in from the Giants organization. He immediately began another rebuild. The Tigers weren't very active in free agency, signing starting pitcher Matthew Boyd, and Michael Lorenzen. They were pretty active in the trade market, trading closer Gregory Soto to the Phillies for Matt Vierling, and Nick Maton. They also traded reliever Joe Jimenez to the Braves for prospect Justyn-Henry Malloy.
This season figures to be a tough one. The Tigers will hope for rebound seasons from their young prospects, mainly Greene, and Torkelson, and bounce back years from veterans like Baez, Meadows, and Jonathan Schoop.
Miguel Cabrera is in his final season of his career, though it's not sure how much playing time manager A.J. Hinch will give him. Hinch could opt to go with more of a platoon at the DH position.
I play every single pitch of every single game, on Legend difficulty. So the stats are all mine, no simulation whatsoever. I stream each game on youtube as well
At the end of every update, there will be links to the schedule (with clickable links to every box score) as well as links to the full MLB Standings, and the Tiger's Stats page. All these are done on google sheets, and embedded on a page on Operationsports.com, so when I update the google sheets, the page automatically updates.
I plan on updating after every series. Each update will have a highlight video of each game in the series, with a mini linescore/notable hitters/pitchers. There will also be a link to the full box score, as well as a link to the full game stream on my Youtube channel.
