Weston Road Flows - The Toronto Blue Jays

Platform: MLB 23 the Show on Xbox One
Rosters: TrueSim Franchise Roster V2 (Injury Free)
Sliders: S & B's Directional MLB 23 Sliders
Roster Control: Single team control
Play Style: Going to be playing one game every series while providing simple recaps of simmed games unless otherwise specified.

Posting Style: Mostly going to be game day reports, try to make it as immersive as possible. This is my first time posting a baseball chise so bear with me as I find my footing.
Roster Management Style: As I've previously mentioned, I'm only going to be controlling the Toronto Blue Jays to start things off. I love the game of baseball but I'm still getting used to the inner workings of the MLB The Show so we will be going slowly and figuring it out as we go.
Shout out to Mattchu12 for the inspiration behind this first post - I was racking my head on how I would create the foundation of this chise. Simplistic is the way to go.

I hope you guys enjoy this journey as much as I will. Let it rip.

Re: Weston Road Flows - The Toronto Blue Jays

Major League Signings:
Kevin Kiermaier, OF: One-year contract worth $9 million
Chris Bassitt, RHP: Three-year contract worth $63 million
Brandon Belt, 1B: One-year contract worth $9.3 million
Trades and Claims:
Traded OF Teoscar Hernandez to the Mariners LHP Adam Macko and RHP Erik Swanson
Traded OF Lourdes Gurriel Jr. & C Gabriel Moreno to the Diamondbacks for OF Daulton Varsho
Needs Addressed:
After a devastatingly disappointing ousting by the Seattle Mariners in the postseason last year, the Blue Jays decided to reshuffle their core group - mixing out the likes of outfielders Teoscar Hernandez and Lourdes Gurriel Jr out for more defensively-minded players like Daulton Varsho and Kevin Kiermaier; effectively giving the Toronto Blue Jays one of the best defensive outfields in the league.

This team seems to have turned the corner on franchise evolution - going from being a regular season stalwart to one being built to withstand the trudges of post-season baseball. This team is still looking to take the leap from good to great.
Remaining Questions:
The burning question is certainly what starting rotation is going to come out. A dominant one featuring Kevin Gausman taking that next step into the upper echelon of AL pitchers or one that lacks quality and can’t get out of early inning jams. The team is hoping for a bounce-back season from Jose Berrios as he joins Gausman, Alek Manaoh, and Chris Bassitt as a solid rotating cast of starters. Yusei Kikuchi is expected to round out the top five while Hyun Jin Ryu continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery. Number one prospect Ricky Tiedemann is also in the mix as a possible midseason addition after some more minor league grooming.

Offensively, the team is loaded with heavy bats capable of littering the top of the American League charts. Obviously, they will be leaning on team MVP Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to be an absolute masher at the plate. He has stated feeling “a deeper sense of relaxation” attending Spring Training after admittedly feeling the pressure of matching his impressive 2021 numbers. A return to form for Guerrero Jr. being flanked by the likes of George Springer, Bo Bichette, and Whit Merrifield, not to mention Alejandro Kirk and Matt Chapman could provide Toronto with the best offense in the league (sorry, San Diego).

Re: Weston Road Flows - The Toronto Blue Jays

GAUSMAN PITCHES DOMINANT SHUTOUT IN SEASON OPENER
03/30/2023 || Busch Stadium - St.Louis, MI

The biggest question mark for the Toronto Blue Jays entering the 2023 season was going to be their pitching. If starting pitcher Kevin Gausman has anything to say about it, it isn’t going to be much of a problem. The Blue Jays downed the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 7-0 on the road on Opening Day thanks to a complete game shutout of the Cardinals’ offensive weapons.

The team would chase St. Louis’ starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery immediately. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. would get things going at the top of the first inning with a quick single that would get Santiago Espinal to home plate to take an early lead that the Blue Jays would never surrender. Bo Bichette would dominate at the plate, getting Espinal and Whit Merrifield to score.

The St. Louis Cardinals’ batters would struggle throughout most of the day, leading to nine shutout innings from Gausman, with seven strikeouts and only allowing six hits. Former MVP Paul Goldschmidt and Cardinals’ power hitters Willson Contreras and Nolan Gorman would only get on base once between the three of them.

The game would feel fairly close until George Springer would send away his first home run of the season 350 feet into the stands for Merrifield and Espinal’s second and third runs of the game, respectively.

The two teams will reconvene on October 1st as the Blue Jays hope to continue their hot start to the season while the Cardinals look to get their offense on the board.

Re: Weston Road Flows - The Toronto Blue Jays

JAYS' HITTING DEPTH PROVE GAME CHANGER IN HIGH-SCORING VICTORY
04/03/2023 || Kauffman Stadium - Kansas City, MO

The beginning of this matchup for the Toronto Blue Jays against the Kansas City Royals felt reflective of their hot start against the St. Louis Cardinals in the previous series. Immediately, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. would put the Blue Jays ahead in the top of the first inning by getting Kevin Kiermaier in. Brandon Belt would have an efficient game, getting on base three times and running in two batters.

Blue Jays' starting pitcher Jose Berrios pitched six strong innings until the Royals' batters started to figure things out. Drew Waters, hitting in the eight-hole, was able to take advantage of Berrios and the Blue Jays' bullpen with a strong double, and later an impressive triple. Franmil Reyes would bang home the game's sole homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning in a futile effort to keep the game close.

The Toronto Blue Jays also got strong efforts from the likes of leadoff hitter Whit Merrifield (3 for 5 with 2 RBIs) and Daulton Varsho (2 for 4 with 2 RBIs as well).

Royals' starting pitcher Brad Keller was belted from the jump by the Blue Jays' triumphant lineup to the tune of 12 hits and six runs earned in four innings.

The Blue Jays and the Royals will battle for the next two days before the Jays fly out west for a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels.

Re: Weston Road Flows - The Toronto Blue Jays

LATE ANGELS COMEBACK COMES UP SHORT AS JAYS ESCAPE
04/07/2023 || Angel Stadium - Anaheim, CA

If there is one thing that the Toronto Blue Jays have started to bring consistently, its getting on base early and dominating some early runs. George Springer would get himself, Bo Bichette, and Whit Merrifield home early with a blast out to left off of Los Angeles Angels' pitcher Tyler Anderson. 3-0 would be the score until the bottom of the 5th inning, when Anthony Rendon would put the Angels on the board with a blast off of Chris Bassitt

Angels' two-way megastar Shohei Ohtani would get his first of two home runs the very next inning, trading with Blue Jays' superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who would get him back in the top of the 7th inning. Ohtani's two-run shot in the top of the eighth inning would get him and fellow superstar Mike Trout home to tie the game up.

Whit Merrifield would ultimately clutch the game-winning run, hitting a single down the right side, allowing Matt Chapman to leg it home. Closer Jordan Romano would sit one of the three hitters faced and save the game for the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays and the Angels will duel two more times before the boys in blue head back home to Canada for a series against the Detroit Tigers.

Re: Weston Road Flows - The Toronto Blue Jays

HUGE SEVENTH INNING BOMB HAS JAYS ROARING PAST TIGERS
04/11/2023 || Rogers Centre - Toronto, ON

The first duel of the series between the Detroit Tigers and the Toronto Blue Jays seemed like a run-of-the-mill game between the two teams up until the seventh inning. Matt Carpenter kicked things off in the top of the second inning with a solo blast before Santiago Espinal hit a single to get Whit Merrifield to make his way home.Austin Meadows would break the tie in the top of the sixth inning and had the Blue Jays' faithful hold their collective breath.

And then all Hell broke loose.

Bo Bichette and Alejandro Kirk both swung for the fences and hit the crowd in the bottom of the seventh inning while the likes of Kevin Kiermaier and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. led the chasing of the Tigers' bullpen for what felt like an eternity.

Bichette and George Springer would come back in the next inning and add some more scores to completely demoralize the Tigers and pray that the end of the game would come sooner rather than later.

13 total runs and 18 total hits and the lowly Detroit Tigers never had a chance. The two teams will face off two more times before the Blue Jays welcome the Tampa Bay Rays to Canada.

CHAPMAN HOMERS TO SAVE JAYS, ESPINAL WINS IT IN EXTRAS
04/14/2023 || Rogers Centre - Toronto, ON

The Toronto Blue Jays welcomed their division rival Tampa Bay Rays into the Rogers Centre for their first series of the young season. And boy, was it an intriguing one.

Blue Jays' starting pitcher Jose Berrios was chased out of the game after struggling early, ending his game after only three innings and a high pitch count. Brandon Lowe and Harold Ramirez would score early and except for a Alejandro Kirk RBI single, seemed like it would be the winning score for the Rays.

Bo Bichette would send off his third home run of the season to continue his red-hot start to the season to tie things up before Lowe doubled back and hit his own homerun blast in the top of the ninth to regain the lead.

Clutch batting and the Blue Jays have not previously been synonymous, but Matt Chapman would come up clutch and blast one for himself to tie things up in the bottom of the ninth. After closer Jordan Romano struck out the Rays during the top of the 10th inning, Santiago Espinal would scorch one up the middle and successfully get Daulton Varsho home to complete the comeback effort.

Re: Weston Road Flows - The Toronto Blue Jays

BLUE JAYS BATS STAY RED HOT, HOLD OFF ASTROS COMEBACK ATTEMPT
04/17/2023 || Minute Maid Park - Houston, TX

There is no team in baseball that is absolutely dicing the ball better than the Toronto Blue Jays. Today, they got to experience the Houston Astros for the first time this season and managed to get 13 hits against the Astros' pitcher Christian Javier on the way to a 6-4 narrow win. Every player in the Blue Jays' lineup managed a hit while Brandon Belt sent one 355-feet for his fourth home run of the season.

Catcher Danny Jansen ripped off a triple by sending one deep into center, managing to bat George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. home to take a 4-1 lead.

Astros' superstar Jose Altuve did his best to keep the Astros in the game, breaking the game open in the bottom of the second with a home run and then coming back in the bottom of the eighth with a two-RBI single off of an error. Blue Jays' relief pitcher Erik Swanson managed to sit the Astros down in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory.

It should be mentioned the strong effort the Blue Jays got from star Alek Manoah, who pitched seven strong innings after coming out cold due to the Altuve homer. He allowed six hits and three earned runs but managed to sit down 12 batters.
