Butch Hobson had a 2-run double in the bottom of the 2nd to start the scoring and Dwight Evans added another run with an RBI single in the bottom of the 8th. Milwaukee avoided the shutout bid with Larry Hisle's solo HR in the 9th. April 18 Milwaukee 2 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 1 - 5 12 0 Boston 0 0 0 0 3 1 0 0 0 0 - 4 7 1 Sorensen, Farmer (9) and Martinez, D.May (9) Eckersley, Stanley (8), Tiant (10) and Fisk WP: Farmer (1-1), LP: Tiant (0-1) HR: Thomas (2), Yastrzemski (3) Gorman Thomas went 1-4 with a 2-run HR in the 1st as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Boston Red Sox in 10 innings, 5-4. Boston took a 4-1 lead with 3 runs in the 5th with a solo HR by Yaz, an RBI double by Dwight Evans and an RBI groundout by Butch Hobson plus an RBI groundout by Carlton Fisk in the 6th. Milwaukee scored a run in the 7th on an error by Eckersley before Bob Stanley came in and allowed the tying run in the 9th on an RBI single by Robin Yount. In the 10th inning, Don Money drove in the go-ahead run with a single then Ed Farmer pitched a 1-2-3 10th to record the win. After trailing 5-1, Boston rallied for 3 runs in the 8th on an RBI single by Carl Yastrzemski and a 2-run triple by Carlton Fisk but Ed Farmer came in and shut down the Red Sox in the 9th for his fourth save of the season. Dwight Evans hit a 2-run HR in the 2nd to give Boston a 3-0 lead before Cleveland tied the game on a solo HR by Johnny Grubb in the 4th plus an RBI single by Grubb and a sac fly by Gary Matthews in the 6th. The Red Sox added 3 more in the 6th on a pair of bases loaded walks by Rick Burleson and Jim Rice then a groundout by Carlton Fisk. April 23 (game 2) Cleveland 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 1 - 3 8 1 Boston 1 0 0 0 2 0 0 1 x - 4 8 1 Paxton, Hood (7) and Pruitt Lee, Drago (9) and Fisk WP: Lee (1-2), LP: Paxton (0-3), SV: Drago (1) HR: Thornton (5), Matthews (1), Lynn (2), Hobson (2) Andre Thornton (pog) went 3-4 with a solo HR to pace the Cleveland attack but to no avail as the Boston Red Sox took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 5th on solo HRs by Fred Lynn and Butch Hobson and defeated the Indians, 4-3, to sweep the 4-game series. Bill Lee got the win as he pitched 8 innings of 5-hit ball and allowing two runs. Cleveland pulled to within one in the 9th off Dick Drago on a single by Alfredo Griffin but Mike Vail was thrown out at third base on a relay by Jerry Remy from Dwight Evans for the final out of the game. MLB News Boston's Dwight Evans was named AL Player of the Week as he batted .517 with 1 HR and 5 RBIs Cincinnati's George Foster was selected the NL Player of the Week for batting .476 with 2 HRs and 8 RBIs Trades 4/18 - Officials for the Atlanta Braves confirmed that they have traded 27-year old lf Gary Matthews to the Cleveland Indians. In return, the Braves will receive 27-year old starting pitcher Wayne Garland 4/18 - The Boston Red Sox traded pitcher Reggie Cleveland to the Texas Rangers for cash Injuries 4/17 - St.Louis's Rob Dressler was confirmed to miss 6 weeks with a strained rotator cuff muscle. 4/19 - Cincinnati's George Hendrick will miss 3 weeks with a hyperextended knee. 4/20 - Montreal's Bobby Murcer will miss at least 2 weeks with a fractured wrist. Boston opened up the scoring on a solo HR by Dwight Evans in the 3rd then added 3 more runs in the 4th on RBI singles by George Scott and Butch Hobson plus an RBI double by Fred Lynn. Milwaukee got a run back on a solo blast by Don Money but the Red Sox answered back as George Scott drove in Jerry Remy with a single to retake a 4-run lead. Boston starter Mike Torrez surrendered solo HRs to Cecil Cooper and Paul Molitor in the 6th and 8th innings before exiting the ball game. Bob Stanley made things interesting in the bottom of the 9th as he allowed 2 singles to put runners on the corners with 1 out then allowed a ground out by Robin Yount to drive in Jim Gantner to pull the Brewers to within one.
