Another Season, Underway!

Alot of questions surround this young squad

Ever since the end of the 2007 season, which ended in a dramatic tie-breaker game with the Colorado Rockies, Padres fans haven't had much to cheer about, and this year.. doesn't seem much different. Lets take a look at some of the Pad's offseason moves:
  • The Friars shipped off Kevin Kouzmanoff in exchange for Aarron Cunningham, and former Padre Scott Hairston
  • The Friars brought in the very versatile lefty Jon Garland
  • They a lso signed the platoon-man brother of Scott Hairston, Jerry Hairston Jr.
  • Pinch-hitting specialist Matt Stairs was also signed to a deal
  • Yorvit Torrealba was also added to the catchers mix along with Nick Hundley
Although none of these moves were substantial, it will be interesting to see how they all pan out. With a potentially very good, young pitching staff and bullpen, it looks as though it will come down to how the offense performs. If the offense has a break-through, who knows? You could be looking potential NL West powerhouse. The only way to find out is to tune in tommorow for opening day in Arizona!

Tomorrow's Match-up:

Padres Lose Opener in Arizona

Friar's bats held to just one hit

Just as our prediction stated; this team will have good pitching, but a mediocre offense, which is what was on display in Arizona in front of a capacity crowd as the Padres were shut down by the DiamondBacks 1-0. Not only that, but the Padres only mustered one hit off of righty Brandon Webb.

"I'm not sure what happened," commented slugging first baseman Adrian Gonzalez (who went 0-4) "his (Webb's) sinker was really nasty and had us all guessing the entire game." Webb went the distance in the game, giving up just the first inning hit to Scott Hairston, while striking out 7.

Padre's ace, Chris Young, also had a good first start, going seven innings and only giving up the one run on a ground out in the 5th inning. Young also notched 5 strikeouts in his first start.

Padres Drop Another in Arizona

Padres crucial error costs the game 6-5

It looked as though everything was going well for the Padres, until the 6th inning when Padres second baseman threw a ball into the seats on a sacrifice bunt, allowing 2 runs to score. "I'm not sure what happened..." Eckstein said "One minute it was in my hands, the next it was in the seats." Before that, the score was 3-2 (both Padre's runs coming in the 1st) and the Padres had their chances.

In the 7th inning, Padre's first baseman Adrian Gonzalez hit a screaming double into the gap in right center, bringing home Eckstein who lead off the inning with a walk. The in the D-Backs half of the inning, they answered with an RBI from Connor Jackson. In the 9th inning however, with closer Chad Qualls on the mound, the Padres made a run at it. Adrian Gonzalez hit a 374 foot 2-run shot with 1 out in the 9th into the right field bleachers to plate himself and David Eckstein. "I saw a fastball I liked, at just put all my power into it for the team and watched it fly!" Gonzalez said. After that, the D-Backs brought in Juan Gutierrez who got the final 2 outs to finish the Padres, 6-5.

"It's good to see that we won't quit," said Friar's manager Bud Black after the game, "After a dismal performance at the plate on Monday, it was also nice to see the bats come to life for 13 hits. If we had a big hit here or there, we would have definatly one that game. There is nothing to be ashamed of in my eyes."

Padres Get Their First Win of '10

Clutch hitting leads to victory to end the series

Just about everything clicked last night for the Pads in front of 36,222 fans in Arizona, as the Padres got their first win of the 2010 campaign 5-3. "Just about everything went right for us" Bud Black said in his post-game interview, "We had clutch hits, made nice defensive plays, and threw strikes when we needed them."

The Padres scored 2 runs in the 1st inning again. Adrian Gonzalez got a 2 out walk, followed by a single up the middle by Scott Hairston, who were both then brought home by a huge double off the bat of Kyle Blanks. In the latter half of the inning, second basman David Eckstein made yet another error with 2 outs which lead to 2 unearned runs from the D-Backs.
"My defense defiantly needs work," said Eckstein who already has 2 errors in the young season.

Then in the 6th inning, Tony Gwynn Jr. got a 1 out single up the middle. After this, he stole second base. Then, with pitcher Kevin Correia trying to bunt him over to third, pitcher Edwin Jackson threw a wild pitch advancing Gwynn to third. Then in a daring attempt at a squeeze, Jackson threw yet another wild pitch, allowing Gwynn to score with ease.

In the 7th, Padre's slugger Kyle Blanks hit a 408 foot shot into the right field seats. The D-Backs then answered with a RBI double from Connor Jackson. In the ninth however, slumping catcher Yorvit Torrealba added some insurance with a homerun that barely cleared the fence in left center field. Closer Heath Bell then put the nail in the D-Back's coffin in the bottom half of the 9th.

"Hopefully we can build off this and net more wins." said Bud Black.
