Padres Gregerson Torched; D-Backs Wins

Padres drop one to Diamondbacks in divisional contest. In a NL West contest under the lights, the Padres were nipped by the Diamondbacks, 6-4, before a crowd of 28,489 fans at Petco Park. Starter Chris Young worked 6 innings and allowed 1 run and 4 hits, but he wasn't around when the game was decided, though he does record his 2nd quality start of the season.
Luke Gregerson, who worked in relief of start Chris Young, had a rough outing out of the bullpen, getting torched for 4 runs in just 1 inning. Adrian Gonzalez went 2 for 3 with a solo home run, sparking things for the Diamondbacks.
The series continues tonight, as the Diamond backs send ace Brandon Webb (0-1, 5.91) to the mound against Kevin Correia (0-1, 5.59)
Quick Hits:
- Scott Hairston hits a lead off home run in the 1st inning.
- Adrian Gonzalez hits his first home run of the season.

Webb Dominates Padres

San Diego loses the series to Arizona and their always solid right-hander Brandon Webb. Being at home was of little value to the Padres, who lost a NL West contest with the Diamondbacks by the score of 5-1. Tony Gwynn Jr was a spark plug offensivley, picking up 3 hits in 4 at-bats. Kevin Correia worked 7 innings in defeat, allowing 5 runs, in the first inning, as his record fell to 0-2. Correia came off a minor injury says

"I wasn't able to locate my pitches in the first inning, but my arm feels good."

Padres skipper Bud Black says: "Kevin (Correia) is 100% ready. He had control issues in the 1st inning, but innings after that he pitches with nice velocity and control. I believe he shuts down 10 batters after the first inning"

The Padres and Diamondbacks wrap things up tomorrow afternoon, with the Padres sending Jon Garland (1-0, 2.31) to the hill while Dan Haren (1-0, 4.26) will toe the rubber for the visiting Diamondbacks.

Quick Hits:

- Tony Gwynn Jr has 3 hits raising his average to .250

- Adrian Gonzalez got his 4th double in the season

Edward Mujica was pinned with the loss out of the bullpen, as he came into the extra-inning affair late and gave up 2 runs in 1 inning. Scott Hairston picked up 1 RBI and went 2-for-4, providing the offensive spark. Gwynn also hit his 1st home run of the season.

Sean Gallagher was removed from the game early because of an injury (Blister on Finger). He's officially listed as day-to-day.

The series continues tonight with Chris Young (1-1, 3.63) going for the Padres and Johnathan Sanchez (1-0, 0.00) slated to work for the Giants.

Padres Pitching Woes Continue Against Giants

April 20, 2010 | Tim Imasa - Friar Nation Reporter

Padres drop one to Giants in divisional contest. Under the lights of Petco Park last night, the Padres lost a divisional battle to the Giants who has been playing well as of late, winning eight of their last 10 games. Adrian Gonzalez collected 2 hits in 3 at-bats and had 2 RBI for the home team. Chris Young (1-2) was all over the place, issuing 4 free passes in only 4 innings of work, as his control problems helped drop him to 1-2 in the season.

After the game, the media asked Padres skipper Bud Black about Chris Young's performance last night, "Sometimes you have it and sometimes you don't, and Chris (Young) clearly didn't have it." Black said.

Fatigue has definitely affected the squad playing 7 games in a row, and the 8th game is following today. Team leader Adrian Gonzalez has this to say about the schedule,

"It is a tough stretch for the team especially to our pitching staff. Even if they want to go out there and pitch, fatigue will come into play."

Padres offense is out there, pitching however is a different story. Few bright spots in Padres pitching staff are Joe Thatcher, Adam Russell, Sean Gallagher, and the veteran Mike Adams. Thatcher and Adams hasn't allowed a run in their outings.

"We're here to help our team win. Even if we go out there in the 4th or 5th inning, we are ready to pitch." Thatcher said.

Black was asked if Gallagher will be inserted to the rotation, "Sean (Gallagher) has really pitched well for us. When our starters struggles early in the game, he always give us solid innings from the pen."

With injuries to key players (Venable, Hundley, Salazar), the reserve has to step up offensively to help the Padres get back on track.

The series finale starts tomorrow afternoon at Petco Park, featuring Kevin Correia (0-2, 5.94) trying to snap Padres losing streak.
