Game #151
ARIZONA 5, SAN FRANCISCO 4

The DBacks may be playing out the string, but they are playing very well.

9/21/09
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks continued their hot play on Monday night as they slipped by the San Francisco Giants 5-4. Eric Byrnes went 3 for 3 with a home run to lead Arizona to the series opening win.

The Giants struck first in the top of the first inning when newly acquired Adrian Gonzales hit a home run to left field.

Arizona would tie it up in the fourth when Eric Byrnes hit a solo home run of his own, deep into the left field stands. They would strike three more times in the fifth and once in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead. Mark Reynolds doubled home Eric Byrnes and Stephen Drew with two outs in the fifth. Reynolds now has 72 RBI's on the season.

The Giants would scratch their way back into this one after starter Phil Hughes left after six innings. They scored two in the eighth off of Bobby Korecky and John Bowker hit a solo shot in the ninth off of Carlos Marmol to cut the lead to 5-4. But Marmol was able to lock it down for his 28th save on the year.

Hughes (7-7) pitched six innings, but struggled with control. He did strike out seven and did not walk any, but the Giants constantly worked the counts deep and that ended his day after just six innings. He allowed just five hits and one earned run.
