The Chicago Cubs struggled against the last place Pirates in the first game of the series. Red hot Ryan Dempster struggled against the Pirates, only going 4 innings, allowing 8 hits and 5 earned runs. Sean Marshall came in for relief and struggled in his one inning, allowing 3 hits and 2 earned runs. Overall, the pitching staff of the Cubs got wrecked today. A late rally by the Cubs was brought to a halt, as the Cubs lost 7-4.

The Cubs started off with an early lead, but their pitching woes continued in the middle of the game. The Pirates knocked in three runs in the fifth and seventh inning to put the game out of reach. Another late rally but the Cubs came up short when Nady struck out to end the game. Cubs will try to avoid a sweep by the last place Pirates in tonights game.

Kosuke Fukudome left the game in the bottom of the fifth inning after colliding with the railing along the right field line. After snagging a ball out of play, Kosuke grimaced in pain and fell to the ground holding his wrist. Initial x-rays appear to be negative, but he will be out for the next 7-10 days to heal the soreness. Rookie Tyler Colvin will move in to take over in right field and split the time with Xavier Nady.
