Another Pirate's Season, Underway!
Alot of questions surround this young squad
After yet another losing season in 2009, and a year where they traded key players such as Nate McClouth, Freddy Sanchez, and Jack Wilson, many Pirates fans are left to wonder, "What is there to look forward to?" And quite frankly, the answer may be hard to find. The Pirates lack a sure fire ace, and an everyday leader on the field for this young squad.
Let's take a look at major off-season move for the Pirates:
Acquired/Re-signed: Akinori Iwamura, Chris Jakubauskas, Wilfredo Ledezma, Vinnie Chulk, Bobby Crosby, John Raynor, Javier Lopez, Ryan Church, Brian Bass, Luke Carlin, Bryan Myrow
Lost: Luis Cruz, Chris Bootcheck, Jesse Chavez, Eric Hacker, Phil Dumatrait, Matt Capps
Although none of these moves were very substantial, it should be interesting to see what direction the Pirates take this year. Maybe, (with a wish and a prayer) they can compete in a relatively weak N.L Central this season. Otherwise, watch for them to trade any player performing well in order to bulk up an already strong minor league system. Either way, it will be interesting to see what Pirates show up this year. So be sure to tune in tomorrow to see the Pirates battle the Los Angelos Dodgers!
Tomorrow's Matchup
Zach Duke (09: 11-16, 4.06 ERA, 106 K's) VS Chad Billingsly (09: 12-11, 4.03 ERA, 179 K's)

Pirates Win 2010 Opener 7-3
Timely hitting and solid pitching lead to victory
Pirate's Jeff Clement celebrates his first career homerun
Pirates at the plate- All but one Pirate had a hit today as they managed 13 hits and 7 runs off Dodger's ace Chad Billingsly. Garrett Jones and Jeff Clement led the charge for the Buccos. Garrett Jones was 4 for 4 with 2 doubles. Jeff Clement went 3 for 4 with his first big league home run, a 3-run shot, and 4 RBI's. Andrew McCutchen also had a homer and Andy LaRouche had a triple.
Dodgers at the plate- The Dodgers had some trouble solving Pirate's ace Zach Duke. They only managed 5 hits, 2 of which were home runs by outfielder Manny Ramirez. Manny knocked in all 3 runs for the Dodgers, going 3 for 4 on the day. Matt Kemp also had the only other extra base hit, a double.
Pirates on the mound- Zach Duke (1-0, 3.85) had a strong outing. He went 7 strong innings, yielded 3 runs on 5 hits, walking none, and had 5 K's. Pirate's relievers Joel Hanrahan, Javier Lopez, and Octavio Dotel shut the door on the Dodgers in the final 2 innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2.
Dodgers on the mound- The Dodger's Chad Billingsly (0-1, 6.00) was less than adequate as he allowed 4 runs on 8 hits in 6.0 innings. He also got 4 K's. The Dodgers pen was also poor as between reliever Belisario, Wade, and Miller, the pen went 2.0 innings and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits.
Worth nothing- The Pirate's pitchers walked 0 batters over all 9 innings... Dodger's pitcher Cory Wade has a league high 54.00 ERA... Garrett Jones also leads the league in batting average and doubles.
Up next- The Pirates and Dodgers will be off tommorow and restart the series as the Pirates Paul Maholm (0-0, 0.00) will battle the Dodger's Hiroki Kuroda (0-0, 0.00) at 7:05 at beautiful PNC Park, right here in Pittsburgh!

Maholm Stymies Dodger's Offense, Pirates Win 2-0
Dodgers held to just 1 run over 9 innings.
Doumit touches home plate after his home run
Pirates at the plate- The Pirates had another good day at the dish as the managed to score 4 runs on 9 hits. Jeff Clement had another big day hitting another homerun and notching 2 RBI's. Ryan Doumit also had a homerun. And Garrett Jones continues his hot streak as he went 2 for 3 with a double. Every Pirate except Lastings Milledge and Ronny Cedeno had a hit.
Dodgers at the plate- There wasn't much for Dodgers fans to be proud of as the Dodgers only managed 5 hits over the 9 innings. Their lone run came off a solo homer from the bat of Rafael Furcal. Casey Blake also had a double for the Dodgers.
Pirates on the mound- Pirate's pitcher Paul Maholm (1-0, 1.00) was nearly lights out on the mound. He scattered 5 hits over the 9 innings he pitched and notched 9 strikeouts. The lone run came in the second inning. He quickly settled in and shut down the Dodgers the rest of the way. "I just had all my pitches working for me." Maholm said, "Hopefully this trend can continue throughout the entire season."
Dodgers on the mound- Starter Hiroki Kiroda (0-1, 5.40) only lasted 5.1 innings and surrendered all 4 runs on 7 hits. He also recorded 4 strikeouts. The Dodger's pen then held the Pirates in check only allowing 0 runs and only 2 hits.
Worth Nothing- The Pirates made no errors today... Ronny Cedeno's struggles are being noted by management... Garrett Jones is hitting an astronomical .857 so far this year.
Up next- The Pirates will go for the sweep behind starter Ross Ohlendorf (0-0, 0.00), as he will go against Hiroki Kiroda (0-1, 5.40) (I don't get it either, the computer intentionally pitched him 2 days in a row. Beats me..) 1:05 right here at PNC Park!

Re: I Pity Da' Pirates | A Pirates Franchise (MLB 10 The Show)
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette 4/7/10
Offense Explodes for 9 Runs in 9-2 Victory
Ohlendorf silences Dodgers, complete sweep
Ohlendorf delivers a pitch
Pirates at the plate- The Pirates slugged 8 extra base hits and 4 base hits off Dodger's pitching, 4 of which were home runs. Jeff Clement accounted for most of the offense, going 2 for 4 with 2 homeruns, giving him 4 in the first 3 games. Andy LaRoche also had a very strong day, going 3 for 4 and just a homerun shy of the cycle. Ryan Doumit and Garrett Jones also had a homerun each.
Dodgers at the plate- Dodgers batters had a tough time figuring out Pirate's pitching. They managed just 2 runs on 8 hits. Manny Ramierez and Andre Ethier carried most of the load, both going 2 for 4. They both each had a double as well. James Loney and Blake DeWitt had both RBI's for the Dodgers.
Pirates on the mound- Starter Ross Ohlendorf (1-0, 1.12) had a very solid outing, going 8 strong innings and only allowing 1 run on 6 hits. He also logged 7 K's over those innings. The Pirate's bull-pen was less than impressive. Reliever Evan Meek gave up 2 hits and 1 run over just 0.2 innings. D.J Carrasco then came in to get the final out in the 9th to seal the deal.
Dodgers on the mound- Hiroki Kuroda (0-2, 5.78) pitched his second game in as many days, and was shelled again by Pirates batters. He only managed to go 4.0 innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits. Then reliever Jeff Weaver came in in the 5th and was also hit hard. He gave up 6 runs on 6 hits in just 2 innings pitched. Hung Chi Kuo came in to pitch the last 2 innings and also gave up a run.
Worth nothing- Pirates starters are yet to give up a walk... Garrett Jones and Andy LaRoche are both hitting .714... Akinori Iwamura's lack of production may lead in a line-up change with Jeff Clement's dominance.... Pirates pitching struck out Matt Kemp 6 times this series.
