Thanks for following along. With the First-Year Draft instead of the players coming in on their original teams, we can reshape and rewrite baseball history.

Re: Worst to First - A GM Travels

5/1/08

Cy Young started our season off with a 6-hit shutout on opening day but we faltered the rest of the month to finish in 7th place with a 6-10 record. Our team only batted a paltry .241 for the month, but it is the third highest team average in the American League. The hitting stars for the month were Tris Speaker (.364-1-9) and rookie Steve Evans (.305-0-3).

That shutout was Cy Young's only win despite having an ERA of 1.85, the highest among our four starters. George Winter (2-2, 1.56 ERA) and Ralph Glaze (2-2, 1.38 ERA) were the only ones with multiple wins.

Our keystone combination of Hobe Ferris at second base and Heinie Wagner at shortstop combined for 16 errors during the first month of the season.

Re: Worst to First - A GM Travels

6/1/08

The team came back last month, going 14-13, to pull us to only 3 games below .500 and in 5th place, 8.0 games behind the defending world champs.

Hitting continues to be a sore spot for us in the early going. The team dropped .006 in average and we are now hitting .235 as a team. The crazy thing is, that's the highest team batting average in the AL! Tris Speaker (.287-1-12), Jimmy Barrett (.282-0-2), Bob Unglaub (.257-1-9) and Hobe Ferris (.256-0-15) were the only regulars to bat over .250 last month.

Cy Young compiled a 4-3 record last month but with a miniscue 0.45 ERA for the month. He is now 5-6 with a league leading 0.95 ERA.

The main culprit continues to be our defense, especially around the second sack. Ferris has already committed 14 errors and Heinie Wagner has committed 20.

I received a trade proposal from Cleveland earlier last month. The Naps wanted to send us second baseman Nap Lajoie for pitchers Frank Oberlin, who is on our reserve roster, and Cy Young. I just couldn't pull the trigger on that one because that would destroy our pitching rotation and there probably would have been a mob outside the Huntington Avenue Grounds looking to linch me.
