Diamondbacks take series; try to complete sweep
By: Robby Reyes | 10/19/10 10:45 AM MT

Young makes a sliding catch to end the game; Gutierrez picks up his first save

HOUSTON-- Another offensive spark for the Diamondbacks as they beat the Houston Astros in a close game, 6-3. Stephen Drew led the way again driving in 2 runs in 3 hits with one of them being a home run, already his fourth of the season.

The Diamondbacks hit 3 doubles, 3 home runs, and drove in 6 runs all as a team with a combined 11 hits. While the Astros only had 3 runs but also had 3 hits, they just couldn't find the big hit.

Ian Kennedy dominated in his first start of the season going 8 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 10 hits striking out 5 batters. Carlos Lee, Marco Brazoban, and Pedro Feliz were the only ones to solve Kennedy as they each drove in a run. The rest of the Houston lineup was silenced. Kirk Gibson turned it over to the bullpen in the ninth inning, which was a save situation for Juan Gutierrez.

Gutierrez allowed one hit and no runs, picking up his first save of the season. The hit he allowed deflected off his leg and rolled down behind the pitcher's mound. Stephen Drew tried to throw him out, but wasn't able to. The next batter hit a line drive to center field, but Young showed his great speed by making a sliding catch to end the ballgame.

Joe Saunders (0-0) will take on Brett Myers (0-0) in the series finale tomorrow.

Grand Slam results to a sweep for the D-backs

By: Robby Reyes | 10/19/10 12:45 PM MT

Hester hits a grand slam in the eight, putting the game out of reach

HOUSTON-- The Diamondbacks start off the season with a series sweep against the Houston Astros in Minute Maid Park. Joe Saunders pitched a decent game allowing 3 earned runs in 8 hits while striking out 10 Astros. Another offensive show by the Diamondbacks, but not as much as yesterday's performance. Three home runs were hit, but John Hester's grand slam was the biggest one as they extended their 2 run lead into 6 in the late going.

The Astros fought hard in today's game. They striked first scoring in the first inning but the Diamondbacks answered back a half inning later. But in the 6th inning, Jeff Keppinger cut the lead into 1 by hitting a 2-run homer. But John Hester hit a grand slam in the eight to put the game out of reach.

The eight inning was supposed to be a quick one, two really retired easily. But then Andrews started losing his command, giving up two hits and a walk with two outs in the eight inning. John Hester came up to the plate, turned on an inside pitch, and crushed his first career grand slam.

The game was a fun roller coaster ride to watch but only one team can win, and that's what Hester proved, who made his first start of the year.

The Diamondbacks will start their first game at home against the Dodgers, they will hand the ball over to their rookie sensation, Daniel Hudson (0-0) who will go against Hiroki Kuroda (0-0).

Late inning extra loss for the D-backs

By: Robby Reyes | 10/19/10 4:15 PM MT

Martin blasts the go-ahead run in the 10th inning

PHOENIX-- It was close but no cigar for the Diamondbacks. In the early going, it was thought that it was going to be a high scoring game. The Dodgers scored one in the first and the Diamondbacks scored one in the third. But then the score remained the same until the ninth inning. Daniel Hudson was impressive in his first start of the year as he allowed only 1 run in 9 hits while striking out 4. Hiroki Kuroda was just as impressive as he allowed the same number of runs but it in just only 5 hits and also striking out 4.

Esmerling Vasquez was summoned in the tenth inning to face Russell Martin. In just 1 pitch, Martin turns on a fastball belt high and crushes it out into the left field seats. Vasquez was charged with the loss, making his ERA rise to 9.00.

In the bottom of the tenth, the Diamondbacks were unable to answer back as Hong-Chi Kuo picks up his first save of the season. Octavio Dotel was the set up man, pitching 2 perfect innings before handing the ball over to Kuo.

Tomorrow's Saturday game will feature the veteran Jeff Weaver (0-0) and the rookie Barry Enright (0-0).

Big Gut gets the save

By: Robby Reyes | 10/19/10 4:45 PM MT

Gutierrez shuts the door to pick up his second save

PHOENIX-- Not a lot of offense, but there were few in this game. 14 hits and 6 runs combined by both teams to sum up Saturday evening. Barry Enright was outstanding, allowing 2 runs in 9 hits while striking out 8. Weaver also allowed 2 runs in 4 hits but allowed one more run after being pulled out of the game. Dodger's bullpen could not hang on as they gave up 2 runs and gave Weaver the loss.

For the first five innings, it was a close game, score was tied at 1. But Stephen Drew blasted an opposite field home run in the 6th, Kevin Kouzmanoff hit a sacrifice fly in the 7th, and Johnson doubled home a run in the 8th. That was three straight innings that the Diamondbacks scored one run.

Enright had a comfortable lead after the 7th, but things almost slipped away from him in the 8th. He gave up only one run but he stranded 2 runners on base while giving up 3 hits. Big Gut, Juan Gutierrez, shut the door for the D-backs, throwing a perfect 9th inning to pick up his second save of the season.

Tomorrow afternoon, it's the aces on the hill, Brandon Webb (1-0) goes head-to-head with outstanding young pitcher, Clayton Kershaw (1-0). What a match up!

Webb goes to distance

By: Robby Reyes | 10/20/10 5:25 PM MT

Webb pumps his first after the last out in Sunday's game

The team celebrates after a series win against the Dodgers

PHOENIX-- Both teams are capable of providing offensive sparks for their pitchers. One team did it, and the other didn't.

It was a family Sunday here at Chase Field, as the Diamondbacks took an the series finale against the Dodgers. Brandon Webb was impressive in his second start of the season, going to distance and picking up his second win of the season. Webb shut down these Dodgers to only 5 runs, 3 earned, in 10 hits while striking out 8. But Clayton Kershaw wasn't able to copy Webb, as he only pitched 4 innings and gave up 7 runs in 6 hits, while walking 4 batters and striking out only 1.

Every batter in the Diamondbacks lineup each got a hit, and Justin Upton had 5, four singles and a triple. Chris Young, Adam LaRoche, Kevin Kouzmanoff, and Stephen Drew were the others who had multi-hit games.
The D-backs had a total of 18 hits and drove in 11, mostly by Upton who drove in 3 runs. Brandon Webb got his first homerun of his career as he drove a two-run shot to straightaway left in the 6th inning.

Re: Anybody, Anytime - Diamondbacks Dynasty

Three game series against the Nationals

By Robby Reyes
FOXSportsArizona.com

The Diamondbacks will take on the Washington Nationals in a three game set in Chase Field this week. Kennedy, Saunders and Hudson will square-off against Strasburg, Zimmerman, and Lannan.

Ian Kennedy (1-0 3.38) vs. Stephen Strasburg (1-0 2.25)
Joe Saunders (1-0 3.86) vs. Jordan Zimmerman (0-1 1.50)
Daniel Hudson (0-0 1.13) vs. John Lannan (1-0 3.86)

Kennedy - Ian Kennedy was great on his first outing. He allowed 3 runs on 10 hits striking out 5 batters to pick up his first win of the season. He is likely to win his next start, but with Strasburg on the mound for the Nats Tuesday night, he may have to work a little harder.

Saunders - Saunders wasn't that good in his first outing, maybe decent, but it was good enough to earn his first win of the season. Saunders can thank his offense for it, providing him with enough run support. Although he struck out 10 Astros in his previous outing, he may have a good chance of winning his next game.

Hudson - Daniel Hudson was tremendous during his first outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers, only allowing 1 run on 9 hits. After 8 innings, he turned it over to the bullpen, and received a no-decision after the bullpen lost the lead and was credited with the loss. With his impressive stat, Hudson can give the Diamondbacks a chance to win their third series in a row.

Following.

I'm interested in seeing Rusty Ryal and Brandon Allen perform for you in 2011.
Did you notice how they progress last season?
