1904 - Year In Review
In the American League, the Boston Americans took the lead at the beginning of June and by the beginning of August had opened up a 10-game lead over the then second place Cleveland club. From there Boston coasted the rest of the way and won the pennant with just a little over a week remaining. By winning the pennant, Boston gave the American League it's first repeat champion. Led by a lineup that included Freddie Parent (.267-6-57), Buck Freeman (.259-3-77), Chick Stahl (.256-1-60) and manager Jimmy Collins (.259-4-71), the strength of the team was it's pitching, which was led by the arms of Bill Dinneen (24-13, 1.46 ERA), Kid Nichols (24-13, 1.71 ERA) and Cy Young (23-13, 1.51 ERA). Cleveland ended the season in second place, 6 games behind, were led at the plate by Nap Lajoie (.299-6-69) and the AL's Outstanding Hitter Award winner, Bill Bradley (.295-6-64) and on the mound by their four 20-game winners: Earl Moore (20-9, 1.48 ERA), Bill Bernhard (20-16, 2.22 ERA), Ed Killian (21-17, 2.31 ERA) and Addie Joss (26-10, 1.95 ERA). The New York Highlanders finished a distant third place, 17 games behind Boston, thanks to the hitting of Willie Keeler (.325-2-66) and the pitching of 19-game winners Harry Howell (19-18, 1.69 ERA) and Jack Chesbro (19-17, 2.37 ERA).
In the senior circuit, the Cincinnati Reds took the lead at the beginning of June then held off a threat by the New York Giants and the Chicago Cubs to win their first pennant in the modern era. Mike Donlin (.350-4-92) and the NL's Outstanding Hitter Award winner, Cy Seymour (.340-7-107) led the way at the plate and the mound crew was led by 20-game winners Bob Ewing (21-12, 2.00 ERA), Jack Harper (23-14, 1.37 ERA) and Noodles Hahn (26-10, 1.86 ERA). The Giants ended up in second place, 6 games behind, thanks to a pitching staff led by Christy Mathewson (25-13, 1.94 ERA) and the league's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner, Joe McGinnity (28-11, 1.77 ERA) and at the plate by George Browne (.285-5-58). Chicago finished the season in third place, 9 games behind the winning Giants, thanks to the bats of Jack McCarthy (.281-2-70), Davy Jones (.263-8-79) and Frank Chance (.279-4-57) and the arms of Fred Glade (24-13, 2.07 ERA) and Jake Weimer (25-12, 1.78 ERA). The American and National Leagues coexisted without incident during the season, but the fall was a different matter. The Americans offered to meet either of the NL contenders, the Reds or the Giants, but the President of the Giants convinced the President of the Reds, as well as the rest of the NL presidents, that he considered the NL to be the premier league so they should both decline the offer so there was no World Series played at the end of the 1904 season. 1905 - Year In Review
In a pitchers year which saw only four regulars .300 hitters in the American League, the Philadelphia team batting average of .240 was good enough to score a league leading 588 runs and bring the Athletics their first AL championship. The White Elephants rise to the top, and their jump from a 1904 fourth-place finish, came about via Topsy Hartsel's team-leading .284 batting average and the arms of southpaws Rube Waddell (28-8, 2.02 ERA), the AL's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner, and Eddie Plank (19-18, 2.09 ERA), who turned in great years but were complemented by the development of Chief Bender (17-12, 2.06 ERA) and Andy Coakley (20-15, 2.71 ERA) into reliable starters. The foursome, although mostly responsible for a team ERA of 2.20, had to take a back seat in team earned run honors to the St.Louis Browns, who walked off with the crown on a sparkling 1.93 performance. Although St.Louis's pitching was rich enough to lead them to a third place finish, the first three months saw them in a dogfight with Boston and the heavy hitting Cleveland club while the Athletics sat in fourth. By the beginning of August, the Mackmen had leap frogged over the three of them and held on to clinch the title with a week to go. Boston finished in second place thanks to a pitching staff led by the three 20-game winners Long Tom Hughes (23-14, 2.24 ERA), Kid Nichols (21-12, 2.27 ERA) and 38-year old Cy Young (22-14, 1.34 ERA). The Browns ended in a tie for third place with Cleveland. The Browns were led by the arms of 20-game winners Red Donahue (20-17, 2.19 ERA) and Barney Pelty (20-14, 1.57 ERA) and at the plate by Bobby Wallace (.261-4-63). Cleveland's heavy hitting attack was led by the bats of Nap Lajoie (.324-1-69), Elmer Flick (.320-4-56) and Charlie Hickman (.228-10-88) and the pitching of Earl Moore (25-12, 2.07 ERA).
In the National League, the Pittsburgh Pirates were two games behind on Labor Day but took the lead with 10 games to go and clinched the title on the next-to-last day of the season. The Bucs's attack was led by the NL's Outstanding Hitter, Honus Wagner (.333-2-58), Fred Clarke (.329-2-82) and Ginger Beaumont (.309-5-61). The mound staff was led by Cy Falkenberg (21-6, 1.86 ERA) and the senior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher Award and Rookie of the Year Award winner, Jack Pfiester (26-10, 1.70 ERA). The defending Cincinnati Reds finished the season in second place, 3 games behind, thanks to the bat of Jake Beckley (.311-0-89) and the arms of Buck Ewing (25-12, 2.52 ERA) and Orval Overall (26-11, 1.99 ERA). The New York Giants finished in third place, 5 games behind the Pirates, featuring the hitting duo of Roger Bresnahan (.298-2-79) and Moose McCormick (.291-3-79) and the arms of Red Ames (20-18, 2.30 ERA) and Christy Mathewson (25-11, 1.80 ERA). After a one year interruption, the World Series resumed with a dazzling pitching performance by the Pirates' staff, holding the Mackmen to only 5 runs in a 4-game sweep to win their second world's championship.
