1906 - Year In Review
In the American League, the Boston Americans bolted to a 4-game lead by the beginning of June then held off a challenge by the Cleveland Naps to clinch their third AL title. George Stone (.324-4-79) and Terry Turner (.279-1-62) were the hitting stars while the pitching staff led the way with three 20-game winners Doc Newton (21-12, 1.88), Joe Harris (25-13, 2.31) and the AL's Outstanding Pitcher, 39-year old Cy Young (26-6, 1.64 ERA). Cleveland finished in second place, 5 games behind, led by an offensive attack which was led by Elmer Flick (.315-2-85), Nap Lajoie (.335-2-81) and the junior circuit's Outstanding Hitter, Nig Clarke (.348-6-91), who also won the Triple Crown. On the other side of the diamond, the pitching staff featured four 20-game winners Bill Bernhard (20-15, 2.15 ERA), Ed Killian (22-7, 2.71 ERA), Addie Joss (23-12, 2.36 ERA) and Otto Hess (23-14, 2.35 ERA). The Philadelphia Athletics finished a distant third place, 16 games behind the front running Boston, behind the bats of Harry Davis (.261-4-62) and Socks Seybold (.285-3-62) and the arm of Rube Waddell (27-11, 1.92 ERA).
In the National League, it seemed like business as usual as the Pittsburgh Pirates went wire-to-wire to win their second straight NL title and their fourth in five years. Leading the way for the Bucs was an line up which featured Ginger Beaumont (.307-1-96), Fred Clarke (.316-2-64) and the NL's Outstanding Hitter, Honus Wagner (.310-3-78). Their mound staff was led by a pair of 20-game winners, Jack Pfiester (24-13, 1.97 ERA) and Deacon Phillippe (23-9, 1.90 ERA), the senior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher. The Cincinnati Reds, the only other team to win the NL title in the last 5 years, finished in second place, 7 games behind, were led by the bats of Cy Seymour (.329-8-67) and Jake Beckley (.309-2-89) and the arms of 20-game winners Bob Ewing (20-16, 2.38 ERA) and Orval Overall (24-11, 2.14 ERA). Finishing in third place, 10 games behind the front running Pirates, were the Philadelphia Phillies. Leading the way on offense were Tim Jordan (.272-4-60), John Titus (.288-5-71) and Sherry Magee (.299-1-83). The pitching staff was led by Tully Sparks (22-13, 2.06 ERA) and the NL's Rookie of the Year, Lew Richie (21-9, 2.02 ERA), who also threw two no-hitters during the season. During the World Series, it was a complete role reversal than when they met in the first World Series. This time around, it was the Americans who dominated the fall classic as Cy Young won two of his three starts to lead the way for Boston to win the series, 4-games-to-1, for their first world's championship. 1907 - Year In Review
In the AL, the Cleveland Naps, contenders since 1904, again claimed the top rung of the ladder for the first time since 1902, clinching the title with about a week to go. One of the key figures was Elmer Flick (.302-1-57). Helping him on the attack was Nap Lajoie (.292-1-53) and Nig Clarke (.273-2-59). Otto Hess (27-10, 1.67 ERA), Glenn Liebhardt (23-14, 1.82 ERA) and the AL's Outstanding Pitcher, and Rookie of the Year, Heinie Berger (26-9, 1.51 ERA) provided the arms to lead the Naps. The Boston Americans finished in second place, 10 games behind Cleveland, thanks to the bats of rookie outfielder Tris Speaker (.222-4-55), Johnny Kling (.285-2-69) and the AL's Outstanding Batter, George Stone (.343-3-65). Leading the mound staff was Cy Young (24-14, 1.91 ERA) and 19-game winner Long Tom Hughes (19-16, 2.16 ERA). Ending up in third place was the Philadelphia Athletics, led by the bat of Harry Davis (.250-7-65) and the arms of Rube Waddell (23-8, 1.61 ERA) and Chief Bender (18-18, 1.97 ERA).
The National League continued to witness the dominance of the Pittsburgh Pirates, only this time it wasn't as easy as in 1906. With Fred Clarke (.306-4-66), Ginger Beaumont (.295-2-75) and Tommy Leach (.263-6-65) leading the attack, the Pirates survived a season long fight with Cincinnati and Philadelphia, finally clinching their third straight NL title on the final day of the season. Leading the Bucs' mound staff was their four 20-game winners: Jack Pfiester (22-12, NL leading 1.25 ERA), Deacon Phillippe (23-14, 1.80 ERA), Ed Karger (24-15, 2.42 ERA) and the league's Outstanding Pitcher, Cy Falkenberg (27-10, 1.57 ERA). The Reds finished in second place, 2 games behind, thanks to the hitting of Cy Seymour (.287-1-61) and Harry Steinfeldt (.271-1-58) and the arms of 20-game winners Charlie Chech (22-9, 1.74 ERA) and Bob Ewing (24-13, 1.69 ERA). The Phillies stayed with the Pirates all season long and ended the season in third place, 3 games behind, riding the arms of Johnny Lush (28-10, 1.85 ERA) and Lew Richie (21-8, 1.53) along with the bats of Tim Jordan (.263-9-90), John Titus (.287-4-72) and the NL's Outstanding Hitter, Sherry Magee (.307-6-73). During the World Series, the Naps pitching took center stage as they took a 3 games to 1 lead thanks to Addie Joss, who threw a shutout in the opening game, and Glenn Liebhardt, who won both of his starts. Thanks to the pitching of Jack Pfiester, Pittsburgh rallied to take game five, 3-0, sending the series back to the steel city. Glenn Liebhardt bested Ed Karger, 6-2, to win his third, and clinching, game to give Cleveland it's first world's championship. Code:
