CINCINNATI - Jay Bruce was drafted and developed by the Cincinnati Reds and now, the Texas native is going to be in a Reds uniform through the 2016 season.
The National League Central Division champion Reds announced Tuesday afternoon that the organization signed the 23-year-old rightfielder to a six-year contract with a club option for a seventh season.
"We've talked about it for awhile" said Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty. The conversations continued at Redsfest in early December and Jocketty said it was apparent that "this was the right time and right player to go forward with it." He noted that Bruce has shown himself to be professional on the field, and has represented the Reds well off-the-field as well in community events.
The Reds drafted Bruce with the 12th overall pick in the June 2005 first-year player draft.
Bruce was eligible for arbitration and would have commanded a hefty raise after hitting .281 with 25 home runs and 70 runs batted in. The six-year deal is reported to be worth $51 million.
Bruce talked about the financial security that the contract provides but noted that it's another indication that the Reds have made a commitment to building a winning team.
Jocketty said he hopes Bruce's signing sends a message to other young players that long term deals are possible.
"We recognize Jay as one of the exceptional young players who form the foundation of our team," Jocketty said. "He's an example of how we are committed to building our organization from within, first by drafting good players and then by holding onto and building around them."
One of those players is believed to be reigning NL MVP Joey Votto who the team has reportedly expressed interest in signing to a long-term extension.
The team has also signed pitcher Bronson Arroyo to a 3-year deal.
